i'm the commissioner and can see every player's 'real' ratings anyway... but cheating wouldn't be fun, now would it? real ratings are on a 1-250 point scale but the game, as real baseball does, uses a 20-80 bell curve grading scale in increments of five to represent standard deviations. so there's various tools every player has that are graded on that scale and the goal is to see how well those correlate to various stats (avg, obp, slg, babip) and then ideally figure out how to project wrc+ or war. there's a few other things too like batted ball tendencies to look at. along with defensive tools for each position and baserunning tools which have their own stats.

sadly the game is dice roll based instead of physics based so stuff like exit velo and launch angle is irrelevant. v_v

i play a realistic baseball simulator/team management game in an online league with 39 other people and would like an edge. other people who play the game have developed calculators but theyre for modern day which our league is not set in so it isn't particularly useful to me. they're also not as specific as what i'm looking for anyway. so yeah.

another guy in the league who is doing data science for grad school is interested in working with me to do it so that will be handy i guess.

Really doubt it. Mario is an animated adaptation and no one takes animation seriously still (even though we should) and doesn't determine anything in the pipeline. TLOU is a TV show, same with Fallout whenever that comes out. Both won't have an effect on the movie space. We might get more video game TV shows, but we've been getting those sparingly for a few years now.

Uncharted did poorly. Sonic is for literal babies. And Pikachu was a flash in the pan. We probably won't get another big Nintendo movie for 5 or so years, if not more. There's the Death Stranding movie in pre-pro rn but that will probably be good.

Imo more animated video game adaptation would be a net positive for animated movies. Better than the schlock Disney has been churning out

grownups love toons. ask @blue_inigo he thinks toons are better than live action movies despite 30 years old. i should also make it clear that tv shows based on video games is super cringe as well and bad for the medium btw.

uncharted still made 400m in a recovering theatrical landscape. studios will see that number and think they can make something cheaper and put it out in a more normalized box office era post-covid and do well. dunno how pikachu can be called a flash in the pan when we are now seeing video game adaptations receive critical acclaim and/or big box office numbers. also again there are tons of grownups who like the two sonic movies, which made 300m and 400m (pikachu made 430m).

mario will blow the doors off and immediately get a sequel, probably some nintendo spinoffs, until they get a smash bros movie. last of us is gonna rake in emmy's and legitimize the medium as worthy of prestige tv adaptations. david e kelley or sam esmail or d&d will be asked to adapt some bullshit for tv. its gonna be super embarrassing to see adults who know better acting like video games have rich narrative texts.

You should be worried about video game adaptations whenever they greenlight a Fortnite movie starring The Rock. As of right now, the Borderlands movie will probably kill the momentum for a few years.

the success of mario bros and tlou, along with the recent success of pikachu and sonic and to a lesser extent uncharted, is gonna seriously outweigh borderlands being a disaster. or that monster hunter movie not doing much (which also came out during covid iirc)

The thing with Westerns is that they were a lot cheaper to make, and therefore didn't eat up as much of a studio's resources. But that doesn't dispute the fact that classic Hollywood wasn't as auteur-driven as you're making it out to be. Back then, Hollywood had the same "stagnation" problem as you're claiming they do now, which was only exacerbated once other places (like France with the French New Wave) started producing their own movies and came in with a unique approach to filmmaking.

The 60s-70s era of Hollywood came about because there was now an entire generation of young directors and writers who had studied film in school and were gaining more exposure to filmmakers overseas. They provided a fresh take to Hollywood because they weren't just studying American filmmakers, but a variety of filmmakers from around the world. Then Star Wars and Jaws dropped, and Hollywood went right back to making marketable blockbusters, which is how we ended up with an abundance of 80s sci-fi action movies and slasher flicks.

wow thanks for the history lesson. i had no idea. i'm being sarcastic btw. i know plenty of movies from [insert genre] were made back then. the point is that is good because it meant there was variety that people got to enjoy and everything wasn't made with the purpose of franchising and creating never-ending universes and making sure everyone liked the same thing and only that thing.

also the classic studio era and new hollywood were both clearly more auteur driven than today's hollywood. possibly why movies are so fucking shitty now.

The late 60's thru early to mid-70's were the exception, not the rule when it came to American auteur-driven cinema having such mainstream appeal (which helps explain why filmmakers like Tarantino have such a long-running obsession with that era). And it only lasted a few years before Jaws and Star Wars invented the blockbuster as we know it today.

I feel like people need to stop letting critics form their opinions for them. I would have missed out on a lot of movies that I actually enjoyed if I just didn't watch them because critics didn't like them.

nobody does this. criticism from people who are informed about the history of the medium, who actually care and write about theme, aesthetics, and whatnot, could not be more irrelevant in today's age. just have a giant marketing budget and make audiences soyface to a "turn your brain off" movie. that's all that matters.

Pierrot le Fou is in my top-five all time favorite movies, yet I enjoy the MCU and genuinely love a small handful of movies out of it.

To clarify though, I'm not currently excited for superhero movies; GotG and Winter Soldier got me into the MCU in a big way, so I was definitely pumped for them up through IW and Endgame. And while I wouldn't say I'm excited for video game adaptations, I think it's great that we've finally got a generation of writers / directors treating the material with the bare-minimum love and attention necessary to finally make VG adaptations competently.

well, the mcu movies are passable at best, and most certainly are not cinema, but i would like to address the video game adaptation thing since that is what this thread is really about.

here's the thing - the main draw of a video game is gameplay. that is inherently not translatable to movies/tv. so what you really need for a good adaptation is an ultra narrative driven game to do something convincing, which i think is why last of us is so popular (personally, i would have dropped tlou already if i didn't love tlou2, which has the only good video game story i've ever experienced). but like what is the appeal of a god of war show, which amazon i think is producing? 75% of those games is maiming mythological creatures. you can't do that for an entire episode of tv if its live action, and if you do, you better have the best action choreographers on the planet (which i doubt will happen since tv shows are typically low rent).

on the other hand, you can also take ultra generic bullshit and make it super popular. like i think mario is going to be an absolute smash hit though despite probably just being a generic family animated movie since it has all of the iconic symbols of the mario games, which are obviously a major cultural touchstone. people will enjoy soyfacing during that movie, for sure. and that will lead to more generic family animated movies based on video games, especially in the nintendo universe, which already has the built-in tie-in opportunity with super smash bros. and then we'll probably get a full fledged live action resident evil reboot more similar to the games and assassins creed reboot, or whatever.

it's all very depressing to think about!
