I've been pissed at commercial space companies for years. When simple things like forgetting a ladder while working on a module and then forcing a person to jump off and then break their leg so bad it has to be amputated, that's unacceptable.

That isn't to say there aren't (important) metrics where we can definitively say things are getting worse. However, this generalized view that "things are getting so much worse" is nothing new.

Putting aside the doomer stuff, it is worse simply from a "what it takes to merely live in today vs the 1950s." It has been sliding downward most of that time. You used to be able to have a nice house all to yourself with a 40 hour a week job and a partner who didn't need to work, and you could raise a couple kids too. That has slowly but steadily changed. Now both partners need to work 60+ hours a week to rent an apartment and raise a kid.

Are there any metrics that matter to the common person that have NOT gotten worse since the rebuilding from WW2 finished in the western world (other than whatever numbers the stock market or other greed metrics indicate)?

We can make all the wealth gains and technological advances we want, but we're still a ticking time bomb with global warning as evidenced my worsening extreme weather patterns year to year.

The "best" part is: climate change weather is the least bad part of, well, the results of the climate change. Its all the aftereffects that are going to make this look more and more like the opening parts of "Delivery Us Mars" on a good day.

Honestly, that game may well be optimistic if we get a Blue Ocean Event before the 30s. (Edit: I mean besides the random energy supply tech the world is supposed to be using in that game)

This is a good bit due to politics too. While one side definitely hates education more than the other, the other has not done enough to support it.

Ironically, I do still use tweaked-to-the-end Firefox with addons on top and continue to stay on top of that.

After a certain point, I just have to have some trust that, since I don't have trouble, do have AV stuff, and basically block every single script source unless I am convinced it is okay, I am relatively alright.

And that Linux at this point would probably just annoy me more than it helps me due to having to re-learn the entire OS.

But yeah, for some reason, for a while and until very recently, a lot of schools ditched phonics in exchange for an idea of... some weird idea that they just need to recognize whole words instead. Like, what, English is not Kanji. English is based on phonics. Heck, even Japanese is based on PHONICS and then teaches Kanji with small phonics characters beneath them. Why the hell would you remove phonics for... "guessing and recognizing a word based on what you see without knowing sounds" or some nonsense like that?

Teaching kids what letters are at least supposed to sound like individually should be the most obvious thing in the world, even IF English in particular is really bad with it. ENGLISH IS NOT KANJI.
