There are reasons we have zoning laws, and I wouldn't mind seeing better and more restrictive zoning laws that better allow "walking cities" and less suburban sprawl.

Loosening zoning laws will lead to unscrupulous developers cramming building projects into inadequately zoned areas and making taxpayers and home owners foot the long term costs.

The politics board did a good job of shutting down Nazis and trolls with very little help from mods.

^I think people talked about this already ITT, but religion is more than just believing in supernatural beings or events. Astrology is not considered a religion for example. But there probably doesnt appear to be too much difference between someone reading a horoscope every day and someone reading a Bible verse for inspiration every day.

So I stick to my point that this topic is very subjective and a lot of disagreements come down to semantics and are unnecessary. Also generalizations probably wont apply to a lot of individual people so you should stop making them if you do.

Sure, but astrology is closer to a religion than a philosophy, with the counter to astrology being a skeptic rather than an atheist.

It's the belief in a god, gods, or supernatural hierarchy that atheists specifically reject.

Rejecting a philosophy is essentially a disageement on it's merits not it's existence and is quite different from rejecting a god and religion.

You can agree with the teachings of a religion while rejecting the god claims. You can't reasonably reject that a philosophical school exists, but you can dismiss it's merits or value.

I think this is super important to make clear.

I think you're trying to broaden what a religion is beyond what I think most people understand it to be.

As for me as an atheist, I define a religion as a belief in a supernatural hierarchical belief system, almost always but not exclusively based on a god or pantheon of gods.

So while in some cases a personal philosophy and a religion can appear to function similarly externally, the main difference is that a religion involves belief in a supernatural entity, entities, or metaphysical realm.

To be quite blunt, no one is saying they are atheistic to the Socratic method or don't believe in existentialism... we're saying we don't believe in a supernatural supreme being, or a creator being, or ancestral spirits and things of that nature.

Frankly that's not what I was trying to excuse and you missed the point.

Can I admit that some atheists are incredibly annoying and aggressive about their atheism? Of course... one of my favorite jokes is: "How can you tell if your co-worker just became and atheist? - wait five minutes and I'm sure they'll tell you."

But I have heard people, especially religious folks trying to create some parallel to their beliefs, claim the idea that anything a non-religious person is passionate about is "their religion": atheism, sports, politics, etc... but this is just a way to avoid addressing the social impact and ramifications of organized religion, and religious people can be just as invested in sports, politics, or any hobby and we don't call them heretics now, do we?

That's the point I was trying to make.

If they translate this into Jamaican and don't change it, then it might be problematic.

Otherwise, it's a funny coincidence.

It's a relatively new right wing mode of dishonest engagement I call the "Fake virtue signal"... it's when a right winger leverages something they normally hate or don't care about to attack you from a false leftist position... in this case pretending they care about workers to shame us for criticizing the problems with tipping culture.

To reason they do this, is to bog down the discussion and make you defend yourself against the accusation instead of addressing the underlying problem which is tipping as a justification for low wages.

In the case of processed sugar specifically, if you really do intense physical training it will burn it off, while what your body doesn't burn off becomes fat.

The main risk to high sugar foods is the spiking of glucose levels in your blood, which is bad but the intense physical activity regulates it somewhat.

Not entirely true. Many of the more militant atheists are very evangelical in the spreading of their good news. It's why no one likes them.

Just because some people engage in a behavior that you can liken to a similar behavior from other groups, does not mean it's the same thing.

I really get annoyed by this "everything people are passionate about is a religion" line of thinking, it's stupid. It's just re-defining things around when we all know we're talking about belief in a god, supernatural realm, or set of deities.

It's funny because I was going to respond to him by saying atheists are frequently accused of being "statists" and other misinformed mutations of communism by religious conservatives that get their marching orders from Fox News and the billionaire right wing media machine.

But in reality, atheists are all over the place because it is the absence of a specific type of belief that is the only thing that literally defines an atheist. Beyond that there are far right libertarian atheists, secular humanists, nihilists, progressives... all over the place.

Atheism is intrinsically contrary to the "established order". We may find religion a detriment to society, but the absence of attachment or central governance is a cornerstone of atheism.

It's only the established order because Christianity is a religion that uses fear and conformity to keep it's adherents in line.

I don't think the level of attachment to various governing systems has any correlation to whether or not someone is an atheist, in fact it's the opposite. Atheists hold a wide swatch of political views, in fact someone just expressing they are an atheist is far less of a predictor of their political views than someone who is part of a specific religious sect.

Idk, a cloth seems kind of gross. I used to to use a sponge cloth (I didn't even know that was the name, I would just call it a loofah even though I guess that's slightly different), but now I honestly just use my bare hands most of the time out of laziness.

You can always rinse out the washcloth under the warm water with soap, it's a porous cloth. Use it a few times, toss it in the washing machine for a more thorough cleaning.

Sponges have the same issues with bacteria build up. It's just personal preference.

Right now on social media there is this hyper sensitivity to physical attractiveness and fitness - which goes beyond healthy and into harmful obsession.

Partly it's the music industry giving up completely on organic talent to promote a sort of real life vocaloid model, the nature of zoom and social media being a visual communication platform, the red pill and pick up artist grift-o-verse, and probably some trends I missed.
