I feel that Im about as self-made as it is possible to be, in that Ive come up from nothing and am very successful, but Im not going to pretend that this didnt require some lucky breaks alongside the hard work. I know that not all people will get that same luck.

Its all too easy for people who have worked hard to convince themselves that their hard work is the only reason that they are successful, which then leads them to believe that anybody who is less successful just doesnt try as hard, but thats not reality. Nobody has ever gotten anywhere without some significant measure of luck.

The thing is, many people work their asses off and never get the breaks, other people have opportunities thrown at them, screw up royally over and over, and because of who they are and who they know... end up doing just fine anyway.

I dont know about that man. I grew up poor and I was kicked out at 16, just like my brothers were.

That's why I said it was conditional.

Around where I grew up, the poorer families were tighter and the kids would live and work out of their parent's homes until they got married, but us middle class kids were expected to have a job and pay for our own apartments if we weren't working to pay off personal expenses through college.

In cases where there was other issues in the family, yeah the poor kids would be forced out of the house early, where in abusive situations or whatever, middle class kids could generally be expected to be allowed to stick around until after high school.

The irony is that "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" was an expression meant to ridicule this mentality, because it's technically impossible to actually perform such a feat.

But conservatives and libertarians are not good at nuance or very clever, they are good at pretending privilege is merit and exploiting others into believing their difficulty is due to government existing or because marginalized people are holding them back.

People are reluctant to say it, but Bayonetta 2 being funded and overseen by Nintendo - and even being an exclusive on an under performing console, it was the best entry in the series and probably saved the franchise.

Quake 2 feels like more like it's own thing instead of "my own original Doom" but I really really prefer the aesthetic of Quake 1 and it basically being Lovecraftian and everything is demons and monsters.

I have and I'm sorry but the whole "Lovecraftian" and mystical setting thing just doesn't really hold up to a play-through. It's a great tech demo and first foray into real 3D for ID software with Doom being a raster and sprite based bit of wizardry that isn't actually 3D at all. So props for being a great first step.

But Quake 1 levels are bland, enemy movement and feedback is stiff, and progression feels like a series of rough, unconnected levels. Quake 2 feels like a real campaign, the enemies are a nightmarish cybernetic abominations, and the levels are much better laid out. People talk about the dark lovecraftian vibes of Quake 1, but don't comment on the holocaust like brutality of the Strogg and their torture and assimilation chambers.

When this turns out to be another nonsense nothingburger, the right wing will just shriek that the "librul media" are protecting democrats and move on to the next nonsense fake scandal.

Depends on the situation doesn't it?

One thing I noticed about how society accepts different things:

For the very rich, it's never expected that the kids pay rent.
For the poor and working class, it seems conditional.
For middle class families... it's usually expected the kids pay rent.

I got the plain version off Gog for cheap awhile ago but I never sat down and played it much. Quake 1 just always made a bigger impression on me.

From a technical standpoint though it did some neat things like continous maps not broken up stages.

It's so much more than that, the weapons feel better, the enemies and setting feel more coherent, the stages are laid out better, and everything really clicks.

I also should add, like the other ports done by NightDive of the classic ID games, this is an excellent port with lots of display and control options you can tweak.

Grabbed Quake 2 on Switch during the Bethesda sale for like $3.99. I remember really liking it back in the day on a computer that could run it... okay at best.

I'm playing through the main campaign some 20 odd years later on difficult, and it is still one of the best first person shooter run and gun experiences ever. The action is quick, you are hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned. The level layouts are well done and the moment to moment gameplay is super addictive.

This is the one true spiritual sequel to 1994's DOOM. Only the demons are replaced by cybernetic sci-fi monstrosities.

I grabbed the first Quake when it released a few months back, and well... it's an interesting game with some moody settings and a fondly remembered experiment into true 3D shooters - but Quake 2 utterly eclipses it in every department.

The orginal Unreal and Quake 2 often get their glossed over in that era of early 3D shooters, and maybe it's a bit of nostalgia, but I think those two were really ahead of their time and hold up as just great games to jump back into.

I'll take 1 Bernie Sanders over 100 Matt Gaetz.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

The main characters are a bit annoying, and after you realize they stripped down the equipment and learn all the mechanics and start unlocking blades the game really opens up and you start exploring some of the more interesting titans.

Whatever people chose. Most people stay with room mates out of need to save money, but if people want to continue for reasons of convenience or community they should be able to without my judgement.
