I remember thinking Eric Clapton was one of the great musicians out there.

Then you learn about all the racist tirades on stage etc.......it's a fucking shame.

Yeah, this one stings. I'd always romanticized his life - especially how he wrote the song of his career to steal George Harrison's wife - but a documentary I watched a few years back de-mystified all that. That same documentary covered the racist tirades, but...well, he was drunk off his ass for that entire decade, and I personally don't put much stock in in vino veritas, so I was willing to give him a pass as long as it was behind him. But his recent anti-vaxx crusades put the nail in the coffin towards admitting that yes, sadly, he's exactly that breed of asshole.

Still, the live-action SMB movie left me genuinely depressed as a kid, so the new one is at least a huge and welcome step up from that.

Whomever was on his team telling him to keep chewing that culture fat in Florida for years really fucked him up. I mean, I'm sure he did it all himself, but if people were telling him this atrocious fascist shit would work well on the national stage, they should be shit canned.

Well, that's exactly what propelled him into the national spotlight in a 'no such thing as bad press' kind of way, with Fox propping him up as the next big thing and CNN writing piece after piece about how dangerous he'd be; otherwise no one would've paid attention to him. But like you said, if he was smart, he would've pivoted away from that once he stepped on the national stage in earnest and adopted the 'sane, reasonable alternative to Trump' veneer that myself and others feared the most.

Thankfully, he's quite the opposite of smart. At this point I think he's a true believer of years of Republican propaganda - someone who genuinely believes the 'silent majority' has been waiting for a white savior like him to rise up and lead them towards taking the country back. I doubt he has even an ounce of conniving political savvy, and just got lucky as hell that A) the majority of Floridian voters are, well, Floridians, and B) the pandemic handed him a golden opportunity to paint himself as a big man against those snooty libruls and their public health measures.

Probably just so they can have a more accurate depiction of the source material, since as someone said they had to cut a lot of stuff for the movie and also (IIRC) had an entirely different ending.

IIRC the final showdown and conclusion were more-or-less the same on the larger beats. It's just that a noteworthy percentage of the moviegoing audience walked away thinking that Knives was just as good if not a better match for Scott than Ramona; for a number of reasons, the books don't leave you with that ambiguity. One of those cases where you can't expect to reach the same destination when you cut out a good chunk of the journey.

I don't mind Vivi taking this. Unlike the Simpsons, there's no obvious single best character like Homer in the FF franchise, so it didn't feel right that the results of this tourney would similarly feel like a foregone conclusion (if that makes any sense).

Now admittedly I'm only about halfway through TotK at this point and things could change by the end, but I'm not nearly as compelled by the story this time around as I was with BotW. Zelda in particular; in BotW she was actually an interesting character when she was a headstrong yet insecure tech-nerd, but as is often the case she's eventually reduced to a bland archetype who has all her problems solved by praying really hard and having light magic come out. The latter seems to be 100% her character in TotK; between that and past sages over-explaining very obvious things, TotK's eponymous tears are thus far waaaay less interesting than BotW's memories.

The tears also suffer more from being revealed out of order. BotW's memories were more character-building vignettes, whereas the tears are more of a mystery unfolding; so when one of the first tears I discover on my own just happens to be Ganondorf knifing Queen Sonia, it doesn't really serve the intended reveals as well.

I put up a pretty good fight against a King Gleeok when I decided to fly over to the platform above Eventide Island for funsies. Maybe had 9 or 10 hearts and mid equipment, managed to get it down to half health without using any Keese eyeballs.

Later I finally decided to put my nose to the grindstone and beat an Ice one (it was flying around the snow plains near the Hebra fairy fountain and I knew I'd have to ferry the musicians in that general direction, didn't want to take any chances). So far that's the only one I've beaten.

What really grinds my gears is the last phase of the fight where they fly up into the stratosphere beyond the reach of even a long-range Keese bowshot. How the fuck are you supposed to even get to them? I just barely managed to Autobuild a hoverbike and get it off the ground before getting pummeled with Ice-Meteor, and I know that's not the intended method. Are you supposed to Recall the giant icicles and ride them up to it? (I didn't think to do that during the fight and it just dawned on me while typing this post that that's probably the solution).

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

MM has a couple standout tracks, but a good chunk of its soundtrack is nauseating, almost to a literal degree. Granted that's the tone they were going for in certain areas, but that doesn't make it any more palatable. I added the full MM soundtrack to my playlist some years back, and after a while I ended up deleting the majority of it because I couldn't stand listening to it anymore.

BotW gets unfairly shit on for its soundtrack being too minimalist, when it's packed with excellent tracks that stand among the franchise best imo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj07-YU5cTk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yR7B7nwD3k

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDCctvADCQI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVDGXXIq4b4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYOpjK1ZriI

Don't get me wrong, I'm still a huge fan of ye olde midi soundtracks, but a MM song that's so simple by design that you can play it on an in-game ocarina can't really hold a candle to the sweeping orchestral majesty of BotW's best.

I mean, the shrines in this game just have you use the same four items over and over again.

first in a possibly interesting way as a tutorial, then one more time as a challenge

lets not pretend this game doesnt have a strict formula it adheres to, that is basically exactly the same as the previous game

This doesn't contradict the point I made about the 'traditional' items / abilities becoming useless outside their respective dungeons, which was the larger point. This was becoming a major series problem by Twilight Princess and even Wind Waker (the latter of which seemed to go out of its way to limit the number of surfaces the Hookshot could actually attach to, nevermind the fact that you didn't get it until the ass-end of the game). I didn't even bother playing Skyward Sword, which should tell you how stale the 'traditional' Zelda formula was getting for me at that point.

I was going to say, the gall to call a linear game bloated when comparing it to an open world game thats actually a few hours long and padded to fill out a hundred plus hours.

As much as I hate to rain on your parade of landing a prize-winning contradiction, 'traditional' Zelda dungeons (particularly in the 3D eras onward) end up feeling bloated because you are more or less stuck there until you complete them. The reason why myself and others saw the Shrine formula as a breath of fresh air is both their bite-sized approach to puzzle solving and the fact that they are optional, stumble-upon, and the vast majority can be done in any order.

And judging by your earlier complaint that you'll never 100% BotW due to the Korok Seeds - a mechanic that so painfully obviously serves as a deconstruction of the standard collect-a-thons, in which a ridiculously large total amount of collectibles is available yet the bar of functional in-game rewards so relatively low that you will find more than enough organically, and not only are you never incentivized to collect them all, the game actually razzes you for doing so - BotW's 'bloat' might just be a you problem.
