Just been thinking about something I heard once. I was asked as a kid what political opinions a classmate was giving because they wanted insight on how their parents were politically thinking...got me reflecting on this topic.

Popular vote is good enough for every state with their in-state elections. I wish it was good enough for the nation, but nope -- gotta have a middle-man thumbing the scale for emptier states.

Just frustrating, especially when looking at the poll here. Seeing the two options with the popular vote winner losing the electoral vote clearly winning has NOT inspired me with confidence that the electoral college works right.

2020's vote total was a sign of society inescapably seeing a hero/asshole daily depending on who you ask and society inescapably recognizing the crisis of a pandemic which was affecting previously-normal daily behaviors. It was much more than just Biden > Hillary -- you just could not ignore there was an election in a much bigger way than usual.

I'll grant that before Donald announced his candidacy, Hillary was the least popular general election candidate to exist yet. However, swapping Hillary out for Biden probably isn't a 16,000,000-vote difference among Democrats against a common opponent. Likewise, switching out Hillary for Biden wouldn't normally gain 11,000,000 more votes for Donald.

Judging Donald as arguably the world's most written-about person and surviving the pandemic. That's mostly why 2020 had uniquely high vote totals.

There is a better way to have this discussion that doesn't sound so absurd. All games (and art in general) should strive to be engaging, and sometimes that engagement isn't necessarily fun but still meaningful to the consumer. Focusing on the 'not fun' part is poor wording.

These points basically.

Fun is great and the norm for the industry as we know it...but a game probably isn't fun if it's not engaging, and there are games that are engaging albeit not fun in the classic sense.

We already accept frustration as a common game experience felt, even in games we love, so it's not like games must always be fun...so why not accept there can be other feelings than just fun?

I might run with that pick next time -- the case IS there. It's upset-material though...dependent on x-stats at a time when CT characters weren't similarly impressing, Square was overall slumping, and rallying had already begun in the contest.

Gotta respect how CT was kicking ass though. It was looking real possible.

What do you look for in good enemy AI?

I went with PD for the multiplayer bots that were so cool and varied at the time before online gaming blew up on consoles..That said, it partly depends on the genres. I want my 2D platformers and roguelikes -- maybe single player games in general -- to have learnable patterns that lead to fun strategies. Meanwhile I want my FPSs and racing games -- maybe multiplayer games in general -- to feel like a competitive back-and-forth of being able to outsmart each other. I want all of these to have enemy AI that feels like their own individual characters different from other types -- goomba VS paratroopa, the different types of flies in Binding of Isaac, speed and acceleration differences in racing games, playstyles in FPS games, even the different techniques for each ghost in Pac-Man, variations like that. They all have to be beatable in some capacity and the goal is to be fun, but opposing the player with lots of variations can help keep it fresh.

Bernie got second place in the DNC primaries twice in a row. 2016 was one thing -- beating Martin O'Malley wasn't exactly considered a high bar -- but 2020 had a huge field and only Biden beat him.

"He couldnt even put away the no namer also rans" just seems a little strong compared to what happened. He beat the current Vice President and largely kept the support people thought Warren would pull from him (though still LFF'd, sure).

I know this board's mostly liberal, so these two choices being the top two choices make a lot of sense.

I don't know how conservative-minded people vote here besides 2020. Beating Hillary was a trophy for them, they hated Obama but Donald's soured them on Romney and McCain, they dunk on Dubya but they voted for him twice before and I doubt they're ready to give Kerry or Gore the chance instead. Maybe Dole > Clinton to save America from the first impeachment anybody alive ever witnessed before? Maybe H.W. > Clinton to continue Reagan's influence via his VP? They ain't giving up Reagan. Just feels like it'd be a total blow-out for 2020 for Republican voters in this poll.

I barely played DS1 but found not being able to pause to be an instant turn-off. I expected hard from the game and series, but I didn't expect it to be tense in like the scary sense and I have a low threshold for that in video games. Not being able to pause to minimize that feeling was too much and I think it's a weird design choice anyway, so I dropped out of it early.

Dark Souls is cool to many people! Just not gonna be a game for me. I recommend trying it on sale sometime to see if it's your speed or not -- seen plenty of parents enjoy the series too.

LA sold a whole bunch on the Switch as a Game Boy Remake, LBW won GotY-awards despite being on the 3DS (how often have you heard that for any handheld games at all?), both of those examples were in the past decade, and in this same decade they also made Triforce Heroes.

Nintendo's interested in the 2D formula and so are Nintendo fans. A new 2D LoZ-game won't reach the sales of BotW, but there's clearly an interest. 2D ain't dead and I could easily be hyped.into an original 2D LoZ game on a console -- I just want it in the vein of LBW much more than LA or TH.

These are some reasons why LoZ could reasonably be considered the greatest game series of all time, here and elsewhere -- it already won a Best Series Ever contest here in 2006 and is about to probably win its fourth GotY since then (plus a fifth game was runner-up as well).

I'm just returning back to this point to be more clear -- no other game series has been more consistent for winning GotY since GaneFAQs decided LoZ was the greatest game series here and confirmed that already-common perception held elsewhere in the world.

LoZ - 2006, 2013, 2017, probably 2023 (runner-up in 2011)
SSB - 2008, 2014, 2018
FF - 2016, 2020 (runner-up in 2006)
Mario - 2007 (runner-up in 2010, potential runner-up in 2017)
RE - 2019 (runner-up in 2021, potential runner-up in 2023)
CoD - 2009 (runner-up in 2007)
(GoW - runner-up in 2018 and 2022)
(Pokemon - runner-up in 2026, potential runner-up in 2013)
(Xenoblade - runner-up in 2013, potential runner-up in 2022)

What game series would people propose is more consistent? I can see a legitimate case for Smash as far has not having any misses. I can see a legitimate case for Mario in terms of longevity. What else? LoZ is clearly in the conversation.

There's a reason why when a new mainline LoZ-game comes out, we usually predict it to be GotY. The series is consistent.

To get more on-topic in accordance witb the title again, the series has grown and experimented in so many ways both in 2D and 3D that it's hard to name one single thing that thematically covers the whole series...but if I had to choose something, I got one that hasn't been named in the topic yet.

LoZ has terrific emphasis on music.

Its melodies from their earliest games were bangers, they have successfully transitioned from chip-tunes to full orchestrations, , they have musical instruments be named in their titles, they have you play memorable ditties that are important to the storyline, and its sound effect are distinct. Even little puzzles like the music fading in and out in the Lost Woods was great. Also remember how cool Sheik was upon arrival? Yeah well Sheik had a harp and it was beautiful.

It's reasons like these over decades that made tying LoZ with Crypt of the Necromancer an easy fit for the Cadence of Hyrule. The LoZ-series is an all-timer for game music -- been the case for almost forty years.

This topic has been ridiculous over the word "consistently" -- it's a lot of why I love ya'll because I am laughing and enjoying reading the responses, but also come on now.

1980s - LoZ
1990s - LttP and OoT
2000s - MM, WW, and TP
2010s - LBW and BotW
2020s so far -TotK

All of those games were GotY-contenders, here and elsewhere. Each of those decades can reasonably have at least one LoZ-game in their top five games of their decade, here and elsewhere. These are some reasons why LoZ could reasonably be considered the greatest game series of all time, here and elsewhere -- it already won a Best Series Ever contest here in 2006 and is about to probably win its fourth GotY since then (plus a fifth game was runner-up as well).

Even if you're picking on SS, name another game that tried what SS did with motion controls and was better. Similar deal with the LoZ-games on the DS -- did other games that were similar on the portable systems actually match or beat what ST and PH did? Maybe! I just don't know them.

"Consistently" is fine. It's not like the topic said "always" and it's easy to know what you meant.

For what it's worth, I was slusing ChatGPT 3.5. Let's see if Bard is any better.

Prompt: Name a game that won a GameFAQs.com Game Of The Decade-contest.

ChatGPT 3.5: As an AI model, I don't have real-time access to specific contest results or up-to-date information. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, GameFAQs had not yet held a "Game of the Decade" contest, as the 2010s had not concluded at that time. It's possible that GameFAQs may have organized such a contest since then, and the winner of such a contest would depend on the specific year and the games eligible for consideration. To find the most up-to-date information on GameFAQs.com contests, I recommend visiting the website or conducting an internet search for recent contest winners.

Bard: There have been two GameFAQs Game of the Decade contests. The first one was held in 2010 and the second one was held in 2020. The winners of the two contests are as follows:
  • 2010 Game of the Decade: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  • 2020 Game of the Decade: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action role-playing game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt. It was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in May 2015. The game is the third main installment in The Witcher series, and a sequel to The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The game is set in a world of magic and monsters, and follows the story of Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter for hire. The game was praised for its narrative, characters, world-building, and gameplay. It won numerous awards, including Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2015.

And this is a funny topic to try on ChatGPT. I bet you could get it to play with x-stats, but then we've been doing that for twenty years. It seems to not know a lot about our contests by default though.

What was controversial about L-Block winning the 2007 Character Battle on GameFAQs?

ChatGPT
I'm sorry, but as of my last knowledge update in September 2021, I couldn't find any information about an L-Block winning the 2007 Character Battle on GameFAQs. It's possible that this event occurred after my knowledge cutoff date or it might be a fictional or niche event that I'm not aware of. GameFAQs holds character battles where users vote for their favorite video game characters, but without more specific details, I cannot provide information on any controversy surrounding L-Block winning in 2007.

User
Who won 2007's Character Battle on GameFAQs.com?

ChatGPT
As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the winner of the 2007 Character Battle on GameFAQs.com was Auron from the game Final Fantasy X. Auron emerged victorious after a series of user votes, ultimately defeating other popular video game characters to claim the title. It's important to note that my information might not be up-to-date, so there is a possibility that there have been changes or updates since then.

User
Who did Auron defeat in the championship?

ChatGPT
In the championship of the 2007 Character Battle on GameFAQs.com, Auron defeated Samus Aran from the Metroid series to claim the title. Auron's popularity and support from fans helped him secure the victory over Samus Aran in the final round of the competition. However, please note that my knowledge is based on information available up until September 2021, and there may have been changes or updates to the competition since then.

Imagine if the actual bracket came out 19 years ago and listed Fallout 3 and Mass Effect as entrants and CJay never elaborated on their presence when called out?

I mean we had Lightning in a contest before FF13 came out...but at least FF13 was previously announced with a trailer at that time. I don't think we had a whiff of FO3 or ME1 in 2004.

You gotta hone in on what is specifically new with AI.

That AI can do much of the work asked of every other person you mentioned combined, and it'll be as fast as you can ask it to do things. That seems new with AI and will improve.

I agree with your point about the training set's millions of consentless works online, just recognizing people have been inspired by works without their consent before...so to your point, what's different with AI? Do the artists that inspired in such a way need to be alive with an estate for this to be wrong, or is it still wrong if it's pulling from a playwright in public domain like Shakespeare?

You say AI doesn't challenge that definition and title of a playwright, but right now the poll is almost 2:1 against this particular example as not okay for a playwright to do. Theatres have recently been releasing their submission guidelines with rules about not accepting plays with any computer assistance. That's a lot of pushback against what you think you are and do. It's a new age with new responsibilities, and I'm curious where this is all going to land.

What does it mean to "say I am the playwright"? Is it an ego/pride thing, or does it confer some sort of social status? Or a financial rights thing?

Basically you need to be more precise in the question. When using the AI, should you still feel proud of your artistic creation? Should you still be treated as a playwright in society? Should you still get all the money from licensing the story?

If a playwright is someone writing plays, using generative AI challenges that definition and title. Financial rights alongside licensing ability and overall ownership is my personal biggest angle of what you named here -- what can be copyrighted under your name, whose name is by the word "by" on the play's front page as well as the production's checks cashed, things like that. All of them have something to do here though.

I recognize how talking about ethics as a shortcut term trying to reference everything here can blur these topics together too much, sorry for confusion here -- just trying to recognize the valid rhetoric that people expect WRITERS to WRITE to own what they write alongside how credibility and respect as a writer is part of this conversation too. I'm interested in all three questions posed in the second paragraph and have intended to open space for each of them.
