When the same thing is pulled in FFIX, it feels more egregious because of how much it sticks out compared to the rest of the game. Xenogears almost feels normalized by the time you finally reach the end of it.

Finish Code Vein, Prey, ME:A (3rd run), DA:I (2nd run), Talos Principle, Hollow Knight. Start new run of Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Dark souls 1/3. Take Megaman 11 or FF 13-2/3 out of the plastic and try them. Try out Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Detroit Become Human, Life is Strange BtS. Result? For example, FO76 got so much hate when it came out for various reasons. But one of the LP'ers I watch seemed to be having a blast with it and put like 50 hours of so of play up on youtube. So I gave it a shot and had a lot of fun with it myself. Just going of general review scores, I never would have found a game that I ended up sinking about 200 hours into before moving on to something else.

That is such a double edged sword. I think it's great when a musician grows and branches out with what they are doing. A new style might bring in new fans but alienate older ones. But if they never change, they get accused of being stale and having no creativity. It also depends on if the shift is subtle between albums so you can follow a time-line and see progression or just a drastic departure from one to the next.
