From what I can tell by every bit of footage I've seen, this is a true paint-by-the-numbers remake. Like they've literally just taken the same exact game and given it relatively newish coat of paint. I'm not surprised its not being lauded as a masterpiece.

From what I've seen, it looks like the stats of everything are mostly the same. The timing of attacks is very different and you only get the splash damage if you do a perfect timed hit. But yeah it seems like it might be overall a little easier >_>

Definitely needed a hard mode, not just a half dozen souped up bosses. Still plan to get it though if not just because its fun but a great way to introduce my kids to RPGs.

I hope you aren't saying 15-20 hours is a bad thing. SMRPG really doesn't have any filler and doesn't really require grinding. That's what's great about it: it has very good pacing. Same with Chrono Trigger.

FF9 can be beaten in about 12 hours. There's even a weapon for getting to the final dungeon in under that

I heard something really cool was cooked up for the remake; I'm waiting for Christmas to get it as I've played the original and loved it, but it's not a single-player game I feel the need to get day 1.

I wanna spoil myself with what this surprise is, but I also would like to give myself a surprise. Might be setting myself up for disappointment, lol.

I mean yes SNES turn based combat is pretty dated. Modern turn based dudes-in-a-row games either have interesting mechanics to play with to win battles, or they're called Dragon Quest

Price point should be a factor in these reviews

the fact that this is essentially an identical experience to a game they could have put on their online service for free is so disappointing tbh, and it being a full price release is absurd

of course its a good game, most of the work in making this a good game was done nearly 30 years ago

Well in that case, I don't see what the problem is. In fact, it's rather impressive considering it could've gotten lower so easily. It's like the first 4 Resident Evil remakes. They scored just as well as the originals, although I heard that 4 remake managed to surpass the original.

Most RPGs don't. A lot of people just don't engage with game mechanics and choose to win through brute force. Even notorious games like SMT are more about utilizing the systems (which aren't exactly deep) rather than being super difficult. Just meet the game at its own level (which often isn't asking much) and it's a breeze.
