You make it. Another game that gets super shit on for being rushed and unfinished is FF15. Well, since the game gave me a fantastic experience then that excuses all of its flaws right?

I'm not the one shrieking about how being unfinished means that people need to hate things, so I have no reason to do such a thing.

This. Its weird how vehemently some people hate this game. There was a guy on another board who was even more hardcore than TC.

The chair thing was annoying, but the story was so good by the second half of disc 2 it barely mattered to me, plus you start to get used to it.

Theres areas where its flawed, but its still the GOAT in core story (arguable surpassed by Xenosaga III), ensemble cast of villains, character depth, and especially soundtrack.

Could you imagine saying this about any other game in the world?

"God of War's plot is so good that if half way through the game it became a chair simulator with Kratos mostly telling the rest of the game story, that barely has any actual gameplay, it'd still be a 10/10 game".

I think the thing OP is missing is that even if a game is unfinished, perception of it is still going to be based on a sum of the game's parts. Like, Xenogears is unfinished, but what it does have is enough for a lot of people to love it. Wind Waker is also unfinished, entire dungeons were cut for time and people still love it. Compare those to FFXV, another notoriously unfinished game. :v If what the game does successfully is good enough fans are going to overlook the unfinished parts.

That's part of my point. I highly doubt people are gonna be consistent with this belief. It'd be much easier just to admit bias and partialness then trying to justify why you think your exceptions are reasonable.

Golden Sun didn't try to be a wannabe epic super ambitious game. Golden Sun was bland and plain as fuck and no one should have expected anything more from the game. You want a classic style JRPG? That's what Golden Sun was trying to be, IMO.

The game wouldnt have become a 2 parter if the developers had no intent for it beyond being a typical and classic JRPG.

To which most players then would obviously think the same. Trying to claim otherwise is like saying mass effect wasnt trying to do so.

Sure it sucks its not playable, but the game wouldve probably been 100+ hours. The game is plenty long enough as it is and theres still a lot of playable story scenarios on disk 2.

Same. Going in with low expectations of disc 2 helped. Still, I agree with the criticism of it.

Calling the game "crap" is just ridiculous, though.

Disc 2 had a lot of cool moments strung together poorly so it wasn't like it was all bad. I think there was enough there to make it clear disc 2 would have been a lot better with more budget and/or time or whatever happened not happening.

The vast majority of people recognize it as a flawed "what could have been" game that nails the first disc flawlessly then stumbled hard in disc two.

That doesn't make the game shit, it just means it's not fully realized and had a lot more potential.

Normally I don't give a shit what people think but the fact that people aren't just giving this rushed incomplete game a pass, they're also calling it a goat of a game and wouldn't give any other game the same pass urks me. The hypocrisy and nostalgia goggles people wear for this game is fucking insane and I feel obligated to call it out. It's a phenomenon.

The story of disc 2 was good from a story perspective it just sucked from a video game perspective since it glossed over many major events in just text.

Most of the important story points were still depicted iirc. There were some lines like "we ended up going to this area," but the major scenes were still pretty traditional.

I wouldn't say the vast majority agrees about anything when it comes to Xenogears, besides maybe that it would have been better if the 2nd disc was done differently (how much better is debatable). Maybe a plurality would say what you described.

This is assuming you believe they were going to nearly establish a very well polished game even with time and resource. The game was way too ambitious and that was part of its failing.

Definitely sounds unfair of me to say but let's face it, it's Square and we all know they can fumble the bag.

Funny thing is that Disc 2 bothers me less because of how much time it takes up. When the same thing is pulled in FFIX, it feels more egregious because of how much it sticks out compared to the rest of the game. Xenogears almost feels normalized by the time you finally reach the end of it.

Fair point, though the strengths are different in this case.

Xenogears is nothing without its narrative.

God of War has an irrelevant narrative.

Well, unironically, the new God of War games have far more of a focus on narrative. So the comparison makes more sense with those.

Semantics. God of War was just an example. Narrative or not, you wouldn't fucking give any other game the same pass you would for Xenogears and are you even reading any other posts here? People are literally saying the plot is everything.
