TopicWhat would have been the "right way" for Rosa Parks to protest?
AlisLandale
11/12/17 10:48:54 PM
#7
Scenario: You dislike restaurants with racist seating policies.

Proposed Solution: You organize a sit-in. Sounds good, right? It's non-violent, sends a powerful, discernible message. "We don't like racist restaurants' seating policies, so we're sitting down in a restaurant." Beautiful.

Predicament: Do we organize a sit-in in Joe's Burgers, or Bob's Chicken and Ice Cream? Joe's has no history of racist policies and many patrons might be potential allies. Bob is a dick who seats all his Black guests near the smelly bathroom with drafty windows and ripped booths.

A lot of protest movements today seem to fail at one or all of the elements presented here. There is no discernible goal. If there is a discernible goal, the form of protest does not communicate it. And if they somehow got one and two correct, they don't direct their protest against the establishment that has done them harm.

"Hey, what do we want?"
"No more police brutality!"
"How are we going to do it!"
"Blocking traffic!"
"Where are we going to block traffic?"
"The airport!"

Rosa Parks was a brilliant, calculated move that would never get done today. She was actually chosen to protest her seat and have a case built around her.

So today, to protest police brutality, are protests founded on the victimization of innocent people? Nah, pretty much everything we see is built on the foundation of people of dubious character that, regardless of innocence, will not garner the sympathy needed to make people care.

Protests jut aren't smart these days. That's the issue.

AlisLandale
11/10/17 5:02:37 PM

Some personal experience. I went to a Christian High school, and here's what we were taught.

Various dating methods (carbon dating) are not accurate beyond a certain threshold, so evolution as we understand it may not have the timetable the accepted theory grants it.

Various examples that "disprove" the assumtion that rock strata are absolutely useful, such as trees found buried vertically through multiple levels.

That Noah's Flood effed up everything and thats why things are buried so deep and those strata cant necessarily be trusted.

That there was a firmament of water surrounding earth in prehistory. Iirc its mentioned in Genesis, and in high school they taught it as like, a massive, literal bubble of water. This supposedly created the conditions that allowed fpr prehistoric life. When the flood happened, the firmament was gone, and the massive change in climate killed the dinosaurs. (Also this is used to explain how Adam etc lived so long)

...

Now if there is any actual evidence for any of this I'd support it being taught, but as far as I know none of these things have any serious scientific investigation behind them, and is mostly armchair speculation. (And things like vertical trees were local phenomenons with specific causes, like collapsed coal mines or something).

And while I was in school these theories were never really explored in depth anyway, but mainly used to discredit evolution as an explanation for how life began.

In summation, I'd be for creationism if there was any serious body of creation science theories with which to teach. I am currently skeptical of it because from personal experience, "creation science" is mainly a tool to discredit mainstream evolutionary theory, not something that is studied to stand on its own.

Dinosaurs reigned supreme for more than 160 million years. Their dynasty came to a cataclysmic close 66 million years ago when an asteroid crashed into the Yucatn Peninsula in Mexico at a site now known as the Chicxulub crater, paving the way for mammals and eventually humans to inherit the Earth.

But had the extraterrestrial impact happened nearly anywhere else, like in the ocean or in the middle of most continents, some scientists now say it is possible dinosaurs could have survived annihilation. Only 13 percent of the Earths surface harbored the ingredients necessary to turn the cosmic collision into this specific mass extinction event, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports.

I think dinosaurs could still be alive today, if the asteroid had landed elsewhere, Kunio Kaiho, a paleontologist from Tohoku University in Japan and lead author on the study, said in an email.
