ROBANN_88 posted...if they meant the colonial kind of kidnapping from Africa and have them handpick sugar canes etc, it's all shit i meant more like, back a couple thousand years ago, slaves were majority captured on the battlefield. what would have happened to them if slavery wasn't a thing? the answer to that is that several would have just been killed instead. that brings the ethical question of "is living a slave better than getting your head chopped off?" some other people actively chose to become a slave, cause they were so damn poor that they would starve to death anyway, so they became a slave in exhange for food and shelter. i don't know for sure, but i have to imagine that these would be more household slaves than silver mine slaves. then you have the societal progress question of, if people like Sokrates, Pythagoras, Hippokrates etc didn't have a slave to care of the household, how much time would they be able to spend on their studies? could they have figured out the Pythagorean theorem or Hippocratic theories if they had to spend all day cleaning the house, fixing up dinner etc? (i'm assuming they had slaves, cause just about anyone who could, did) --- |
