Gin Wigmore - Kill of the Night
A cougar anthem with a touch of wickedness. And by cougar I mean I just googled her and she's actually about my age so I guess the song just sounds much more vintage than it is and has a predatory motif and her delivery has a strange feline quality that makes me think she's constantly doing the cat claws gesture in the recording booth, so that's fun. I dig the organ stuff in the last third especially.

Mobb Deep (ft. Nas and Raekwon) - Eye for an Eye (Your Beef is Mines)
Been a long time since I listened to this album. I liked Prodigy's verse the most, though Raekwon's random cornea wordplay was a highlight. The old school production is something I have a soft spot for, if it were just a beat then I would be aching for more chord changes but under four emcees it functions well as a neutral platform to compare the performer's talents. Shook/10

Andy Akiho - NO one To kNOW one
Breaks the rules of capitalization. There's so much percussion in a tight little space there! Some of the xylo/vibes/flute stuff reminds me of Einstein on the Beach with the arpeggiations and rhythmic variants. The second half picks up with a more solid backbeat and really pulls everything together but the best part of the song is the random single word that everyone sings in unison at 1:54. That was so out of nowhere I was cracking up, had to keep scrolling back to it.

Sorority Noise - A Portrait Of
That wall of distortion was a pleasant surprise for what I thought was going to be a clean-cut track. It's so expansive and textural without being too muddy! I really like how it combos with that final spoken word verse, really builds up the steam. Reminds me of that Nada Surf song, "Popular".

N-Qia - Shootingstar
The densely layered beat has a cutesy Postal Service vibe and the singer sounds like she was recorded on a different song from down the hallway. The music sounds happy but she sounds haunted, and now I'm emotionally confused. Maybe it's just the reverb. There's a lot of minutae to appreciate here regardless, bunches of cool patches and samples blended into the mix.

The White Stripes - Jolene (Dolly Parton)
It's easy for me to forget how good The White stripes are, I tend to think of them in the abstract as "that band I loved back in middle school" but when I actually hear them again I'm reminded my taste wasn't half-bad in middle school. You gotta love the duo's shtick of being the protagonists from a stop-animation Tim Burton movie, makes it easy to root for them. Maybe Meg is just kind of there outlining the barest skeleton of a beat but it gives Jack a lot of room to bring the heat with his playing/singing. Never heard the Parton song so the performance is the draw for me here, especially since it's live.

The Dear Hunter - He Said He Had A Story
I've never listened to these guys intently but my brother's always playing them so I feel like I've heard this peripherally. The vocal is the highlight, he sounds indignant and operatic in the way that makes Muse appealing. To match, the band tries to constantly bowl you over in the way that makes Muse fatiguing. So in that respect it'd be a "great in small doses" type of thing for me because I can't always sustain the mood to engage with that kind of dramatic intensity for an album's worth. I wasn't sold on the first half but the climax is pretty convincing.

Ludo - Lake Pontchartrain
Holy shit this was mixed loud. The singer has kind of voice that irritates me so it's unfortunate that he's so prominent - he's great pitch-wise it's just that certain type of high-strung storytelling melodrama puts me off. And I guess the tempo isn't my speed (what a fuckin' first world complaint), that jacked up ska backbeat always makes me feel like I'm trapped in a bouncehouse with a bunch of kids who are bouncing too damn fast. That lake has a pretty top notch name though.

Trivium - Beyond Oblivion
I hate to say it but this did nothing for me. None of it in particular offended or excited me, it was just sort of there. I might just be metally fatigued at the moment. BA-DUM-CHHH

Half Sister - Time Moves Slow - The Garden - Morgan's Farm - Freya - Gorgon - The Diaz Brothers - Tiger Tank - Beyond Oblivion - Lake Pontchartrian - Good Night Sweet Girl

Half Sister takes it just barely. I had to give it the nod because BBNG was already on my radar but Protomartyr is something I've never heard of.

He is Legend - The Garden
Sick old school heavy vibe, "sludge-y stoner-ish" is an apt description. Reminded me of Acid Bath. The riff is indeed hoppin, a lot of tricky stutters in there. That's some dirty guitar work.

The Sword - Freya
Saw these guys open for Lamb of God and Metallica about 9 years ago, at the time I was more impressed by LoG but today I'd probably rather see The Sword. Like most of their stuff this song evokes a classic 70's sound that never seems to wither with age. It comes off as super authentic too, that counts for a lot.

Jangler - Gorgon
I think it's 11/4 in the first half and then uhh...like /4 or something cheeky. What is going on in the second phase of this? Help me out here. Once again I have been stumped by The Marvelous Musical Mysteries of Mycro's Metric Mischief. Expressionissimo. My favorite part was the creepy syncopated bells.

The Ring - Morgan's Farm
Love me some film music. IMDB tells me The Ring was scored by none other than Hans Zimmer, fuckin' guy gets everywhere huh? Good ol' Zimmy Zim-Zams. Haven't seen The Ring in ages so I don't remember this piece contextually but it works as a theme of mounting dread (get the violinist to play sul ponticello and you got yourself halfway to a horror score, works every time) - it's strikingly similar to Arvo Part's Fratres, which ended up getting used in There Will Be Blood. I'm gonna have to put this on my netflix queue now.

BADBADNOTGOOD - Time Moves Slow
Oh damn this hit the spot. Oh my damn. Mcflubbin my man this is the shit, killer contributions from every bandmember including the Future Islands singer whose distinct voice channels something between Baby Huey and Fine Young Cannibals. But the drums and organ is where it's at for me, they really make this tune something special. I slept on this band far too long!

Speedy Ortiz - Tiger Tank
Bring Grunge Back! Give it to me detuned and deranged and derivative because I grew up in the 90's and I'll never let it go. Okay actually I'm not super hot on this but it does give me the impression that Speedy Ortiz has other tunes I'd enjoy more if I just checked out one of their albums.

The Mountain Goats - The Diaz Brothers
I dig it, it's very contemporary musical theater, very Supertramp, a spritely tune contrasting with dark lyrics. All about that ironic juxtaposition. In this case I find the high positive energy of the instrumental prevails over the lyrical subject matter, which apparently is about the characters from Scarface.

Ghost of the Robot - Good Night Sweet Girl
It's a bit slow-paced, kind of a "first song you FC on guitar hero" vibe but that's not necessarily bad. I can't say I agree that I love listening to James Marsters singing though, he sounds a bit warbly in some parts. They try to kick it up a notch with a big finish but it doesn't muster enough to get me on board - I think it would improve a lot of it had some spicier guitar tones going on. That's what was missing.

Protomartyr - Half Sister
Dire beginnings - oh dang we talkin' about Palestine? This got me locked in a dark funky groove and every change was a good change that built to a satisfying climax. Loved the textural packages, it had all the cool guitar tones the previous song left me wanting. Excellent recommendation, it's going to be tough to choose between this and BBNG.

My only complaints are how over-edited it all feels and the way the villain was handled. Not into the bottomless knives gimmick and they have Blanchett spend way too much time explaining her backstory and motivations without really touching on whether she's aware of Ragnarok's status. Was she not expecting it?

Everything on trash planet was good though. Goldblum was hilarious, the Pure Imagination scene was a perfect intro to his character. I loved how they kept mocking the "sun's gettin real low" line from Age of Ultron.

Can any of the comic readers tell me what the ship was in the mid-credits stinger? Thought it looked like the Kree ship from GotG but I have no idea.

Huey Lewis and the News - Heart of Rock n' Roll
"Produced by the band, 'Sports' opens with what will probably become their signature song, The Heart of Rock n Roll, a loving ode to rock n roll all over the United States. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that gives the songs on the album a big boost..."

The chapters of American Psycho that disturbed me the most were the ones about Genesis and Huey Lewis and the News. I fear that I sound that way when I talk about my own favorites, that maybe people just think I'm crazy when I ramble on about Steely Dan's recording process or whatever. However I don't care for HLatN specifically and this song aint doin' anything to change that, as much as I enjoy Bateman's spirited appraisal. I mean if this was the beating heart of Rock in '83 it must have been in a coma but I know damn well the real heart of rock that year was ZZ Top's Sharp Dressed Man.

Calvin Harris - Cash Out
Ah yes I dig this production! Funky bassline, good use of the autotune in chorus, groovy piano ending w/ D'angelo style background vocals. Vintage but fresh, highly danceable and not a moment is wasted. This is my vibe all the way. I just wish I had more to say since it's my favorite of the week.

Haken - The Endless Knot
Gnarly axe pyrotechnics and another slightly Maynardish singer work for me. Succesful integration of the dubstep drop, sly almost. Mycro mentioned 5/16, I don't know how he counts that fast. I heard the 6/8 for most of it with a couple 5/4 sections and like a swung 4/4 at the end but that guitar line is just whizzing by. It does sound really cool when it drops back in though, really intense moment. I always thought these guys were doom metal for some reason but I'm glad they're more in the Animals as Leaders vein.

Tegan and Sara - Dark Come Soon
Well-excuted buildup with an awareness to never run through the same configuration twice. No individual part of this is flashy or special but it forms a solid whole and after a few listens it really endeared itself to me. Very pleasant.

Lilly Allen - Never Gonna Happen
Between the accordion, that ubiquitous plodding bassline, and the "get lost, dude" lyrics I find it all a bit sour and uninviting. The whole carnival music vibe puts me off. Her voice sounds alright but I'm certain there's better avenues for it, at least for me to appreciate. As for now I'm a bigger fan of Alfie Allen.

Dirty Loops - Ta Fete
Catchy and strange, clean yet raw - is it progressive pop? Funky fusion? I've seen this keyboardist do a keyscape demo of his own but I didn't expect the group to sound like this. Gotta appreciate the portions - a more indulgent band might have taken 4x times as long to say the same thing and I'd give it a quarter of the views. Good musicianship all around, pretty voice too.

Baroness - A Horse Called Golgotha
I'll always think of these guys as Mastodon's more virtuous younger brother. Like many of their tunes this carries an anthemic stadium-rock quality ripe for crowd participation (same! HORIZON!) that really sets them apart from other sludge metal acts. It's all very extroverted. I love the changes in the last third of the song, full psychedelic guitar solo into reverb-drenched breakdown. The video is sick too, feels very 90's. Something Beavis and Butthead would have riffed on.

Yeasayer - Sunrise
I enjoyed their 2010 album but haven't payed attention since, going by this track they haven't changed much. They work texture like a less rabid AnCo with some dreampop juice, piling layers onto the barest of song structures until it mounts an undeniably cool vibe. Great bass and percussion work going on here. I almost wish the final minute lasted longer, had a good tropical melancholy feel.

Ella Riot - White Lies
Oh I had to eurodance. I was surprised to find that Ella Riot is actually My Dear Disco under a different name (big fan of Joey Dosik and Theo Katzman) but more surprised at how much I was into it for seven dang minutes. It's got such aerobic-friendly tempo you'd think it'd wear thin halfway through but somehow I never got bored. It doesn't hurt for me that it's got Katzman and Dosik on guitar and keys, or that it changes it up a bit in the final minutes.

The Decemberists - Mariner's Revenge Song
Depressing and ridiculous. Again with the accordion! I feel like if Colin Meloy dated Lily Allen they could write the most venomous breakup songs of all time using only a monkey and an organ grinder. I liked this type of thing on The Crane Wife but I think this tune suffers from all the bad side effects that can come with well-intended theatricality - acute melodrama, nauseating instrumentals, and lyrical diarrhea.

The Vincent Black Shadow - Stupid Intruder
A verse like a spy theme with the chorus of a Franz Ferdinand banger. Immediately accessible and deft pop that would be an effective show opener in both concert and television, I'm not hooked on this alone but it definitely holds my interest.
