I should have gone with a Christmas tune apparently!

Muse - Showbiz
It's true, I skipped this album and went straight to Origins of Symmetry. This seems to represent them at their most stripped-down and straight-forward, a simple build-up to showcase Bellamy's signature intensity/hyperventilating falsetto. It's pretty well-realized for a first album although I'd argue they went on to write much more involving song structures over the course of their next few albums. And for the record, I never quite got the Radiohead comparison myself.

The Alan Parsons Project - Somebody Out There
A peppy identity theft anthem, I'm into it. Guess I should expand my APP knowledge because I've only really heard I Robot but I love that record. I don't think this song gets to that same level but it kinda fits into a brand of wistful 70's piano rock (Elton John, Supertramp) that generally agrees with my taste.

Panzerballet - Let It Snow
This is my kind of cover, a wild recontextualization that goes well beyond the scope of the original and manages to transcend its own ridiculousness by taking itself so seriously as a composition. By the time the intro riff recapitulates at the end I'm totally sold on the sincerity of a damn Christmas carol as prog metal pulp. Bravo!

Harry Connick Jr. - When My Heart Finds Christmas
Good old HCJ. I found out about this guy in reverse, first knew him from movie Bug before realizing he was actually a musician. The latter is way more appreciable, I've always been fond of the great american songbook/tin pan alley style of torch that he keeps lit. It's a bit sappy but around this time of year when I'm visiting relatives it's incredibly cathartic and nostalgic.

Sufjan Stevens - Did I Make You Cry On Christmas Day? (Well, You Deserved It!)
This is an affront to Santa. 'Sufjan' just declared War on Christmas with this cheer-souring, unjolly lump of charcoal in the stocking of domestic despair. It sounds decent I guess.

Frank Ocean - Chanel
Dig the use of autotune and the delicacy of production (it really comes through on headphones). Melty and tranquil with a glistening hook, Frank's music aspires to a beauty that rap deserves more often.

DMX - Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
I don't even think he's in tune but that makes it funnier. It's more of a drunk karaoke than a proper cover...one stronger in concept than execution.

Alexander Jean ft. Casey Abrams - We Three Kings
One of the more musically interesting Carols that doesn't get overplayed, lyrically it's bit too on the religious bent for my singing along to. It was penned surprisingly recently for how much of a medieval vibe it gives off. This rendition is servicable and well-balanced but nothing jumped out at me as uniquely special about it.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Nights in Blue
Too cornball theatrical for me, especially the singer. Like, settle down with the fuckin' tossed salad and scrambled eggs okay Louis Armstrong? Guy thinks he's Louis Armstrong over here.

August Burns Red - Sleigh Ride
There's some bomb drum fills and a neat jazzy interlude that I might appreciate more if Panzerballet hadn't already cornered the market on it with Let It Snow. Thunder stolen! Still kinda fun though.

Brockhampton - Bleach
Similar to the Frank Ocean tune but the rapper seems more dominated by the track behind him - that has its own appeal but in a way where I'd rather just listen to the instrumental, which sounds lush and labored over and in control. I believe this is the second Brockhampton song in the club so far and I'm just not yet convinced in the talent of the rapper.

Star Wars resonates so broadly because it's spiritual and has the power of myth behind it in the Joseph Campbell sense, I don't think moments of spectacle alone are what keep it on such a high pedestal. That said, I agree there's only one truly great film in the lot.

So what's the reason people are hating it so much?

Can only speak for myself but a lot of the things I disliked TFA for got worse. Bad jokes, uninteresting new characters, lack of imagination outside the framework of the original trilogy. The biggest disappointment is that for how much it expressed a desire to unshackle itself from the past it couldn't help but continue to fetishize the story beats and iconography from the OT.

I'll try to make this my last complaint post cuz I don't wanna rain on the parade but I guess I'm just over Star Wars now. Maybe it's time to check out Farscape

The new characters felt like they barely developed, the feature-length chase sequence was about as monotonous as OJ's Bronco being cautiously followed down the 405, the humor/quips nearly dipped to Prequel levels ("Chrome dome?" Yo Momma jokes?). At least we got that goofy Monte Carlo interlude so Disney of all companies could remind us how bad corporate greed is

I'm just the worst. Half-ass writeups this time I'm tired

The Gun Club - Give Up the Sun
Feels like a Doors jam that overstays its welcome (I IV V ad nauseum) I think the singer whiffs some notes but the imperfections kinda give it character

Glassjaw - Jesus Glue
Someone really tried to sell me on these guys about twelve years ago and I never got around to checking them out. Kinda wish I had because I dig the sound of this, and it's something I would have been more into at that age although I still like it a lot even now. Thrashy melodic grindcore with some exciting twists and turns

Gorillaz - Superfast Jellyfish
Colorful and quirky like a mid-2000's Zooey Deschanel movie...almost too goofy for its own good. Fun but insubstantial like a (insert previous simile)

Simon Phillips - Upside in Downside Up
Wow that's awesome, holy shit. I loved the middle part with the rhodes, that 70's fusion sound is golden. Sick geetar solo was just a cherry on top

La Roux - Colorless Color
Ah yes I remember her from the iconsience series. Sleek, well-produced (synth)pop that lacks an edge but carries an energy

Priests - Suck
I enjoyed the lackadaiscal progression, somehow didn't even notice the sax first time through. Good background jams for my current Dark Souls adventure

Reba McEntire - The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia
It's not until you type it out that "McEntire" sounds like a completely made-up name. Wait, those keyboards at the beginning...it's the John Cena song hell yeah! Reba must have a pretty dark sense of humor because the happiest sounding part of the tune involves a corrupt judicial system hanging innocent men...dramatic irony is an effective storytelling device that's for sure.

Wrabel - The Village
Great dynamics on this song, it really underpromises and overdelivers. Dude has a powerful voice and oh shit a touching message to boot? What a pleasant surprise. Reminds me of that 'too late to 'pologize' tune by who the fuck ever

Peeping Tom - We're Not Alone
Unique vibe here, metallic dub almost. I was going to say it reminds me of Fantomas but then a wild Mike Patton appeared and I started hearing all the Keyser Soze clues around me that makes it so obvious in hindsight. I swear this dude has so many side projects he could fill an entire Coachella lineup. He needs his own genre tag. Oh yeah uh...I liked it!

Julian Casablancas - River of Brakelights
Ooh interesting, just distorted and bizarre enough to keep it unpredictable without sacrificing accessibility. Not into the ending (I wanted it to keep getting darker and heavier!) but there's a lot else to feast on here and the aesthetic has high potential in my estimation.

Art By Numbers - Best Laid Plans
How does every other dude have this voice nowadays but before like 2000 I never heard anyone sing this way? Mysteries of the universe. I prefer the jazz idioms to the drama-metal stuff so the bookends of this song are where I'm at.

Jesus Glue - Upside Down in the Downside Up - The Village - We're Not Alone - River of Brakelights - Superfast Jellyfish - The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia - Colorless Color - Suck - Best Laid Plans - Give Up the Sun

Dream Theater - Honor Thy Father
Chuggity chuggity whaaaat son. This sounds more 'normal' than what I expected from Dream Theater, although I legit haven't listened to them in about twelve years. It's actually pretty catchy in the riff department. Keyboard solo is sick and makes me turn the volume up, which is a good sign at the seven minute mark of a ten minute ditty. Pinched harmonics always make me smile, it's like the shaka gesture of metal music to me. Hang loose, thy father.

The Move - I Can Hear the Grass Grow
Is it about that loud weed? It's a quaint piece and emblematic of its time but I'm not aching to hear more, if this tune is any indication it's no mystery to me why The Move never caught the same wave as its contemporaries - in a year that saw the release of Revolver and Pet Sounds this just feels a step behind.

Joey Bada$$ - Y U DON'T LOVE ME
Excellent production (loved the synth strings that come in about halfway through) helps me take the sadfreshprince.jpg mood seriously, the lyrics are so $orrowful on this one. His flow is nice though and that always makes moping more forgivable. Ain't nobody praying for Joey. Solid track but nothing spectacular and I'm still not convinced of this guy's supossed Bada$$ery.

Mastodon - Blue Walsh
It's exactly what I want out of Mastodon: psychedelic twang-metal with hooks, vocal variety, colorful drumming, lead guitar at the right balance of cerebral and visceral. Why it'd almost fit right onto Crack the damn Skye and we all know how important that record is. Glad you picked this because otherwise I would have probably never listened to the EP which flew completely under my radar.
