I've been playing a lot of Mario Kart 8, the portability is a nice idea but I wouldn't leave the house with it. It's not like a gameboy where you can just slip it in your pocket

Blonde Redhead - For the Damaged Coda
Love the progression and buildup and I have to agree it would have been nice to hear it burn a little longer. It feels like a dramatic overture to a bigger piece, but I wouldn't consider teasing a flaw. If anything it just makes me want to check out the band more.

London Symphony Orchestra - Purple Rain
A harmonica lead? Really? I know uploads of Prince's own recordings still get taken down constantly but that doesn't mean I'll settle for some indifferent orchestral cover commissioned to drum up attendance for the next concert season. It sounded like LSO had no love for the song.

Chase - Open Up Wide
Full of frantic energy, has a freewheeling narrative quality like it's scoring a montage from a sped up blaxploitation flick. Totally rad and zany. Those organ chops near the end killed me.

Frank Turner - Worse Things Happen At Sea
He's not wrong. There's drowning, shark attacks, piracy, naval warfare, oil spills, cruise ship hangovers - all worse than heartbreak. I just wish the song were more focused on the former than the latter. A little less "woe is me she slept around" and a little more "thank god I've never had to deal with decompression sickness though". And the yelling was a bit much. The tune didn't sound bad but it's not my style.

Twelve Foot Ninja - Collateral
Damn this is some good shit. Super chunky and catchy, it never strikes me as corny (usually my one hangup with type of stuff) and the guy has a great voice. If there's one specific sub-genre of metal I'm into it's whatever this one is.

It's a crude comparison, the breakbeat clashing with 20th century string ideas made me think of it.

Circa Survive - The Amulet
Wow yeah mcflubbin aint' lyin about the voice not matching the appearance. He sounds good though. Dig the guitar tone. I wish music videos would stop doing the slo-mo lipsync thing, it's a cool effect hypothetically but I feel like it never actually syncs up smoothly enough to convince the eye. Point is I got more into the song by not watching the video. It ended up having a nice atmosphere but I wish it had more bite or thickness to it. It's like the endless breadsticks of music - soft, zesty, a little moist, but ultimately not what I put on pants and drive to Olive Garden for.

Incubus - New Skin
Man I forgot how aggro they sounded on this album. I just saw them about a month ago and though they still knock out the heavier hits they don't play anything quite this frenzied anymore. This song is just a clear, cohesive blend of rap/funk/metal elements that sounds totally organic and I've always loved Brandon Boyd's weird voice. Solid pick.

Louis Cole - You Will See
This is the most bizarre, dissonant, dark shit I've heard out of Louis Cole and I love it. I couldn't help but be reminded of Venetian Snares, his drumming is always so intense and it contrasts so well with the narcotic nightmare lullaby vocals. There's a real sense of dread here, it's a very powerful two minutes.

Steve Lacy - Dark Red
I'm liking the vocal production here, the singer has this cool Damon Albarnish crooner intonation that really drives the vibe of the tune home and the swirl of voices around him add a lot of dynamics and texture to the progression. It actually manages a timeless quality without being in-your-face retro.

SZA - Drew Barrymore
You don't hear much rap using a drum kit like you would hear in a rock ballad, so this was a pleasant departure from the usual hi-hat drill trap beat. It really sells the intimate/vulnerable bent of the lyrics. She's got a decent flow to boot and I enjoyed all the playful processing on her vocal - but what's this got to do with Drew Barrymore?

Sampha - (No One Knows Me) Like the Piano
Honestly I thought he would be a more impressive pianist. Excellent singer and this is obviously a personal song for him but for a piano-based composition this just doesn't do it for me.

Caligula's Horse - Firelight

I'm not in love with the song itself but man I really dig the texture they put together, the somewhat vulnerable voice and pinchy lead guitar over a space-rock foundation sounds great. It reminds me of Dredg but with a Satriani style guitarist who knows when to take a backseat.

BROCKHAMPTON - SWEET

Too many cooks! The beat and chorus are alright but there's too many rappers here who don't enhance the track much. The second verse hits a lyrical peak, but the third guy fumbles it and the fourth and fifth can't save it. By the time the last guy was reminiscing about growing up listening to N*SYNC in a minivan and wanting to be JT I just wasn't feeling it anymore.

Watch The Putin Interviews. In the end, all Putin wants is for his country to be stable economically, for his people to live well. Trump wants the same thing. All good leaders want the same thing.

I love how you're always paranoid about the shadowy deep state globalist technocrat bilderberg puppet masters but you also trust dear leader unconditionally
