Why do they have to be "somebody"? Who were Obi Wan's parents? Mace Windu's? Yoda's? Anakin's mother was just a slave that the force "chose". There's literally no pre-requisite for force sensitivity. It chooses who it chooses.

That's kind of the point. It doesn't matter, so why did they stress it so much in the movies if it doesn't matter?

I mean, it was Rey wanting to know who her family was, if they were ever coming back for her. Not because of some legacy, but because she's been alone most of her life. It's about her search for belonging somewhere.

What about the parts stressing their importance when she's not around? Like Kylo Ren already keeping tabs on her and being upset when she leaves with Finn. Or Maz's conversation with Han after Finn and Rey leave the room, and she asks who Rey really is, and Han gets a concerned look on his face as it cuts away. It's not just Rey, it's most of the important characters in TFA who keep a focus on who her parents are.

That makes no sense. You can't say Rey saying it made it so her parents were special cause of course she'd sound like that, they're her parents.

In the scene when Kylo says her parents are nobody, he does so by asking if she knows about them. She answers by saying they were nobody, and he agrees. That's what I meant, if it's a lie, he's not the one who told it. That makes me think it could turn out to be true after all. I still feel it's likely wrong, or he capitalized on her misunderstanding her vision or whatever though. *shrug*

The thing I said about it implying her parents were important were from the force awakens. When Kylo Ren is already aware of her and becomes furious when she leaves with Finn, if she was just a random nobody he wouldn't care and they weren't aware that she was his counter balance at that point. Then the scene with Maz and Han, when she asks him who Rey is and it cuts away before he answers.

The movie itself is wanting us to ask who her parents are, because it keeps bringing it up. Then the big reveal is just "haha, you expected an answer? You're dumb."

I'd be fine with them being nobodies if the force awakens hadn't heavily implied they were special somehow. As it is, the only thing making me think it may be true is that Rey said it first. He had a lot to gain at that point by convincing her she was nobody. I'm leaning towards it being a lie.

My parents already only consider me to be expendable income to them. So that would definitely intensify. They'd expect a free ticket to anything they want. If I'd refuse, things would likely turn nasty because I could afford it. Then there'd be the usual family beggars who only show up when they want something. I'm sure that'd include my brother and his wife, probably expecting a huge handout whenever they want.

Seriously, if I ever got rich, I'd just have to cut ties with everyone I know and leave. At least I'd be able to afford such a move then, but I'd be even more alone afterwards. So yeah, not great options.

Well I hope you'll listen to me as somebody who's in a situation that's not so different from yours. At 27 I'd had no experience with women, but stumbled into a quasi-relationship with an oddly persistent woman. She was unattractive and selfish. She was a liar, and a thief. She was heavily into drugs, including heroin now if I credit what I hear. She was jaded and cynical and never happy. She would constantly lie to me and solicit suggestive pictures that she would turn around and show to other people. She was an absolutely awful idea on my part. Just atrocious. I let her use me as a doormat for a while before she threw me away as disdainfully as she possibly could.

I'm not sure if I could overstate how grateful I am to her. Her coming into my life was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I'd had this conception of relationships and love as something remote, something on a pedestal, something miles away from me. She took a needle to that bubble with sadistic glee, and it was liberating for me. It got me out of my own head a little and helped me stop overthinking about these things. Just getting some experience, however embarrassing it ultimately was, was really valuable.

It's been just over a month since that absurd experiment ended, and I haven't magically turned into a 'Chad'. I'm still an ugly, awkward, lonely loser. But I'm much happier now than I have been in a long time, and I have absolute faith that I'm going to find somebody better. It's really not so hard after all when we tear down these walls we put up around ourselves. I really think you should just find somebody. Anybody. Not Ms. Right, just somebody as lonely as you are, because that's not so rare as you might think. Just something different to pull yourself out of that rut and to get some experience and to hopefully change your whole perspective on these things. If I can do it, I find it difficult to believe that you can't.

I'm glad that happened for you. I wouldn't want you to end up like me. Now you're 7 years younger than me, with more experience, and ready to gain more. Soon you'll be with someone better, and be happy.

I've been told I'm wrong by multiple people, on multiple boards and in pm's, all of whose are kind and helpful posters. They all have way more experience with this kind of thing, so I'm inclined to believe they know more than I do, and what I was hoping for just doesn't exist for me.

These kind and helpful people are telling you that nobody would want to be with you and that you should just give up?

No, just that I'm unfit to be with as I am. That I need to fix myself before I can consider being with anybody. It just feels like they're saying I'm not worth being with, and it seems like half my issues are from being unwanted anyway. I thought being with somebody be good, but I guess not.

Everyone has baggage, brother. And they take it into their relationships. You deserve to find someone as much as anyone. And while you shouldn't unload everything on someone as soon as you get into a relationship, it's okay to share a bit. You can, if things go right, end up helping each other become stronger together.

I was never planning on unloading anything, at least not until things were becoming serious. And only then so they'd know what they were in for. I never intended to use anyone just to help myself, but apparently thinking I'd feel better if I managed to find someone means exactly that, and I'm being selfish, and unfair.
It doesn't even matter because it's not ever going to be an issue anyway. I'm never going to find anyone, and that's that.

Anony1125 posted...
And what about the issues that 'poor innocent sap' would burden you with? Nearly all of us have issues, even the ones who look like they have everything together. To me it seems far more fulfilling and meaningful to help each other work through things and to learn to love someone for their issues than for two perfect people who don't need each other to be boring and perfect together. I don't for a moment believe that it's impossible to find someone who would be happy to be burdened with you and all that you are.

That's what I thought too, that everyone has something. That we could help each other, and that we'd grow closer through that. No ones perfect, I would never expect anyone else to be. I thought that kind of thing was just part of the territory, and you have to learn to support each other.

I'm just not. I've been told it's unfair to burden someone else into helping me deal with my issues. I assumed being with someone would boost my confidence and self esteem, but nope, it'd just be me being a burden on some poor innocent sap who was dumb enough to be interested in me.

Christmas Eve 3 years ago, he woke up to go to work. My mom checked Facebook before he left, and saw posts about his mother having died. So yeah, that sucked but we were told that it happened early and they didn't want to wake people up at 4am with the news and that they were contacting everyone at a more reasonable hour.

Well, last week he got on Facebook in the afternoon and saw that his brother had died. He'd been very ill, so it wasn't unexpected. Still, his family had all day to contact him and didn't. He just randomly saw it from Facebook. He texted other me,bears of his family and they had no idea still.

Again, yesterday he checks Facebook. Turns out his sister has been hospitalized with an aneurism, like the one that nearly killed him a year ago(just realized today is actually exactly 1 year from then, weird). No one bothered contacting him, they just slap a post on Facebook and assume that's good enough.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not close to that side of the family at all. It's just kind of surprising at the complete lack of consideration and respect they all seem to have. If I were my dad, or his much more respectable brother who also never gets contacted, I'd be completely pissed.
