like the first comment says, civ isn't a historical simulation, it doesn't really portray *anyone* accurately, that's the point of the game.

if he wants a more accurate representation, he should look at EU4 where first nations get to sit around north america doing almost nothing for like a century before europeans show up and kick their asses.

I think Opus Magnum is the only 2017 game I've played. it's good.

I guess a couple others I played for like 5 minutes are Planescape Torment: EE and Endless Space 2, but I didn't play them enough to rate them.

I don't think I'd care that it was "me" that was killed before (I guess it depends what I "remember"); really this just equates to having supernatural/psychic knowledge of a murder.

I think larger orders tend to get messed up and smaller ones don't. I must have had like 200+ small orders in a row at Wendy's without a single issue, and the one time I got a large order for a bunch of people, now stuff is missing.

recently got a "free" sandwich at tim hortons though, which is the first ever time I got *extra* food from their mistakes, so that was cool.

if the screen literally looks cyan (green-blue), then the red part of the video signal is being broken, so the connection to the TV is broken or loose. check the cable at both ends, that it's secure, and that it doesn't have any bent pins.

reading your post more thoroughly, if it's not the cable, and doesn't seem like a physical issue, then I guess you have something screwy going on with the video drivers. I would try to update drivers and look around for anyone else having a similar issue with that kind of laptop.

I say "es-que-el" instead of "sequel", but I don't see the point anyway. "sequel" only saves 1 sylable and SQL isn't as straightforward as VAC is.

it's a good category, because a lot of games have good songs, but a game has to *have* an overworld first, and then if it does, it probably doesn't have that memorable a theme. the only other ones I can think of are:

Paladin's Quest, which I hadn't heard in decades. very very good


Morrowind, I'll just post 1 but they're all good (there are 7 "explore" themes). (might not count now that I think of it, since I think explore themes will play anywhere you are if you're not in combat)

I sort of do/did. some guy I knew loosely from elementary school was on facebook (like 15+ years later). he was spewing antisemitic white-supremacist stuff all over facebook. I'd never seen anything like that, especially from someone I had known. I assumed he was trolling but when I talked to him about it he seemed pretty genuine, and he was doing it all under his real name. I don't use facebook anymore so I don't know what became of him.

Most people taking 1st year CS courses probably aren't getting degrees in CS. All math majors need to take CS, so do most other Science degrees.

at my uni there are specific courses for comp sci majors, and specific other ones for non-CS majors.

I don't even know if it should be "taught" exactly. maybe run through the gist of what they are in the intro courses, and then just require them from then on, and relate back to them now and then in courses.

for example, things like makefiles, or using the linux server to submit assignments and that kind of thing. they don't really "teach" you those things (I guess they go over it loosely in the labs), they're just a necessary part of the process. they're in the background. should be the same for unit tests, it's just a part of your program. and source control even moreso "in the background". it's just how you write code, you commit it to a repo somewhere.

anything but the way it was: if you're lucky you happen to take this one random course and learn about all of this stuff, even though it's all pretty much essential knowledge and stuff you will use instantly and constantly in any real-world scenario.

What you are thinking about there is a Software Engineering degree vs. a Computer Science degree. Computer Science is the degree program everyone associates with programming, but Software Engineering is the degree program where everything you mentioned actually get applied. The downside is that Software Engineering has less of a emphasis on low level technology and complex problems.

when I started, there was barely a such thing as a "software engineering" degree. CS and SE were technically different things, but CS was mainly all there was to take. though, in my CS program we did have to take 1 SE course, but you didn't learn any of this stuff.

I think maybe you're thinking of design patterns specifically though. they would probably be covered in SE, but the others (unit tests, source control, refactoring, and also reflection) were taught in a completely optional 4th year course called "advanced programming techniques". if it were up to me, advanced programming techniques would be a second year, if not first year, course, or even just incorporate them into the "intro to CS" courses.

unit tests, source control, and refactoring should all be taught basically immediately, in fact assignments in any course should expect units tests and a repository to be submitted and should be worth part of the grade on every assignment.

Starbound is probably great if you like Terraria. (I don't like Terraria, so didn't really like Starbound)

Age of Wonders 3 has amazing tactical combat, but it has a lousy campaign (I thought so anyway). It might have been improved in DLC but I have yet to return to it.

Age of Wonders 1 on the other hand, which I now see listed, is *extremely* good. It's not perfect either, but is very very very very good. The tactical combat is not as complex as AoW3, but the campaign is WAY better than 3 and has WAY more variety.

Age of Wonders 2 is also really great. They all kind of have their pros and cons versus each other. 3 has the crappiest campaign by far. 1 tends to have a problem of small armies in large battlefields requiring too much movement. 2 has balance problems. All of them are worth playing.

I have yet to try AoW: Shadow Magic (even though I think I've bought it twice...)

Trails in the Sky is IMO the best written game I've ever played. The only thing that comes close is Mass Effect and other Bioware games, but it's even better than Bioware. The only problem is that the combat is a tad dull. (Hard to think of why... it's too slow paced or something. It's actually *good* combat, it just moves at a snails pace making it a lot less fun than it should be.)

Rage is a somewhat fun FPS that is literally half-finished and basically ends for no reason right in the middle of the game. I don't outright recommend the game, but what is there *is* good.

Dungeon Siege 1 is a great game, but has a *really* slow start. It gets better and better and better the further you make it. It has pretty lousy character customization (game design philosophy was that you should just pick up a stick, start whacking things, and slowly become a fighter by doing so), but the environments and enemy variety more than make up for it. the other dungeon siege games are less good; forgettable but not terrible. I recommend playing DS1 on hard, but it's up to you and what you're looking for.

Factorio is an amazing game, but it's not listed as on sale ($25)

from what I've played, Gauntlet is better than I expected, but not that awesome either

Braid is worth playing.

Geometry Wars 1 is awesome but maybe not that long lasting (they really need to release Galaxies on Steam)

it has to provide a selection pressure. if it were actually effective to do that, then one-eyed blinking (assuming it could manifest in the first place) would be selected for. two-eye blinkers would have a higher death rate than one-eye blinkers and would eventually be replaced by them.

This topic was made because green dragon made that topic asking how long it'd take, earlier I saw this as a bundle sale and with both of those combined it made me wonder if this would be good for someone who wants to dive into coding or programming.

IIRC he was looking to learn as fast as humanly possible. these books would probably not be a good way to do that, they would be more to casually learn some random programming.

the best way to learn IMO is to find projects to implement, and implement them. also, you should maintain a set of personal guidelines and conventions which you grow over time. learn about refactoring, clean code, design patterns, unit tests, and source/version control. I feel like these should be learned as soon as possible. for some reason they are mostly ignored even when getting a degree in CS. they should be taught as fundamental programming concepts right from the start.

it was ok... it didn't really make any sense. I remember my favorite part being Jude Law's character.

it's supposed to be about AI but completely misses the concept. it conflates robots with AI, which are *completely* different things. after messing that up, it then asks "what if we give robots emotion", as if that means anything. the movie is supposed to be about *AI* and then never even touches the concept. fails right out of the gate, and so everything that follows has no philosophical punch, which means that it tried to be insightful sci-fi and completely fails, and all you're left with is passable generic entertainment.

Hexen would be pretty cool. Wouldn't it be kind of like a first-person *Souls game?

Hexen 1 is like melee doom with puzzles; you later get ranged attacks which consume mana. also the levels are organized into 5 sets of 1 hub world with 4 subworlds each, and you have to travel back and forth between the levels to solve the whole puzzle.

default Hexen 1 is a little imbalanced. I had made a small patch a long time ago which fixed a few things. I think it's still on one of my HDs somewhere.

what's really the important factor is how tactical the combat is and how good it is, turn based or not. it can be good or bad either way.

I'll lean towards real-time though, I think, mainly because turn-based combat tends to create a disconnect between exploration and combat. in a real-time game, you can loot a chest while being waled on by a zombie, for example. in a turn-based game, this is only possible if the combat occurs in the same space as the exploration, consuming AP or something for looting a chest.

note that I'm thinking of "pausable real-time", too. to put it simply: pausable-real-time > turn-based > unpausable real-time
