Sort of, but what I meant was that while Ents were maybe loosely known about, I don't think anyone knew about the Huorns. The point of them is sort of that you can barely tell the difference between them and regular trees, except they somehow move around at night when you can't see them.

the huorns wiped out the orc army, whereas I don't recall the Ents actually fighting at all, but they were able to demolish the magical rock walls of Isengard and Orthanc, and divert the river to flood the whole place including the tower.

My cousin says that because addicts choose to do drugs, they should simply choose to stop. Easy peasy.

actually, it's a lot more complicated than that. I'm not a neurologist or anything, but from what I've learned it has (at least in part) to do with dopamine and what dopamine does. this is actually a little bit mind-blowing to me.

dopamine *reinforces the mental pathways that led to its release*. it's almost like a weird form of time-travel; it's an event that manages to increase its own chances of ocurring by lending strength to the chain of events that led to its cause.

with drug addiction, you have poor decision-making leading up to the taking of the drug, immediately followed by an unnaturally high volume of neurotransmitters being released, including dopamine, which reinforces everything in your mind that led up to that moment. whatever it was about you that got you to that moment has now been magnified, increasing the chance that it happens again, and increasing the chance that it will be reinforced further. it's a weird kind of self-reinforcing trap.

While that's not inaccurate (stress depresses the immune system), it doesn't have much to do with cancer. Most cancers aren't something the immune system can prevent.

that sure sounds completely wrong. your immune system is normally *exactly* what prevents things like cancer. if you want to be all tautological and say "by cancer I mean those kinds of cancer that your immune system fails to catch" then fine whatever, but having a healthy immune system is still a better place to be versus cancer. in fact, getting your immune system to recognize the cancer is always one potential avenue for curing it. saying "your immune system doesn't have much to do with cancer" is just asinine.

do people actually "scream" when something scares them? that doesn't seem like a natural reaction to me. my actual reaction is to tense and freeze up for the split second, and then utter "oh, fuck" in relief once I realize it's nothing.

the most intense scares I've had are usually unintended by the game, and are cases where I've done something like looked away at the wrong moment only to look back at something completely unexpected.

I think the wrong assumption is that acronyms are necessarily for reducing the syllabic workload. rather, I think it's more like they become their own term which is independent of the underlying words. it more easily brings to mind the right context and it's implications than just the mundane words that it's composed of.

I would guess the other way around, that poor sleep results in more remembered dreams, but who knows.

I know that if I drink too much coffee and then try to sleep, if I do manage to sleep it will be extremely poor quality sleep and since I can't get deeply enough to sleep my dreams will be much closer to my conscious mind and I'll remember them way more.

sleeping well is the opposite, you crash and wake up almost instantly with no recollection of anything.

The definition of "Replay Value" kinda changed over the years. I remember people saying that Mario 3 had a ton of Replay value, because it's fun to play again. But nowadays replay value is measured in tricky achievements and grindier activities that you wouldn't ever do a second time.

i see replay value as in lots of quality content i don't see little trinkets or stupid achievement hunting as replay value

for me replay value means that there are different ways to play the game. usually this will be mostly RPGs, where playing it in different ways is the point. the best games like this, you will be thinking "I can't wait to try playing <other way>" on your first playthrough, and the best of the best games like this you'll still be thinking it on your 5th or even 10th playthrough (Dark Souls).

NES and Gamecube I could see being overrated, but SNES if anything is underrated even despite its already high rating. no system in history has such a fantastic almost never ending supply of awesome games (exception to PC of course).

LttP > Zelda 2 > Zelda 1

Can't imagine how anyone can not like LttP, it's just gaming bliss. Zelda 2 I can see not liking, but IMO there's a lot of value there if you're willing to look for it. Zelda 1... why does anyone like that game? Zelda 2 has such epic dungeons. Zelda 1... everything is just boring and pointless. I guess maybe it's just all subjective and nostalgia based, but I dunno...

SMW > SMB3

SMB3 is more challenging, SMW is more fun. what would be nice is a game as fun as SMW but as challenging as 3.

I had a couple creepy ones when I was playing tons of Doom 3, but other than that I almost never have them.

in Doom 3, there are a few events where you simultaneously become paralyzed and hallucinate. twice I had a dream where I think I noticed that I was paralyzed while sleeping and this triggered a similar "you're paralyzed, the walls are bleeding, the moon is turning red, there's a monster in front of you sucking the life out of you" moment.

a very common dream (not really a nightmare) for me is having to fight someone only to be frustrated as heck by being paralyzed and feeling like I'm stuck in quicksand while fighting.

other than that I think I once dreamed the city was bombed, and there's occasionally one where I've done something really stupid like robbed a bank which is very relieving to wake up from.

That's cool and all, but again, those sound to me like they were never standard. Wouldn't special editions of new games still have stuff like that? Yeah, sure, people like fancy manuals too, but that isn't what people are complaining about with games not having manuals.

this was 'standard' for PC gaming. of course it was probably not standard for console gaming. most of these are not special editions, these are just complex games that have complex manuals.

really, it's the internet that ruined this, though. sad as it is, the internet is a just plain better medium to present this kind of information, especially since games evolve way more these days than they used to. back then, a game would be released and stay the way it was released, and there was no internet to look anything up, so if you had a complex game, you needed a good manual. it was a crucial part of the package (for PC gaming anyway).

That is exactly what they are talking about.

well, it depends. there is the worthless 2-page booklet that describes how to use a cd-drive, or there's the 20-40 page manual that also includes a few of the absolute basics of how to play the game. or there's 100+ page manuals that include a good deal of the complex mechanics as well as maybe a partial bestiary and spell list. or there's the gorgeous 200+ BG2 manual.

going through my collection (discovering I don't know where my BG2 manual is, which worries me...) some of my favorites include:

IWD: 150+ pages, which includes complete spell list, mechanics, and many attribute tables (similar for BG2, IWD2, and NWN. Throne of Bhaal has only a 40+ page manual, but it's all tables and new spell descriptions from start to finish.)

Age of Wonders: 180+ pages, includes unit lists and ability lists (I actually never really used this, didn't know it had that kind of info)

Lords of Magic: 250+ pages, includes lots of strategy and mechanical info that's otherwise hard to figure out in-game, as well as full spell tables (though no descriptions) and unit, item, and building lists

SimCity 2000: approaching 150 pages describing most or all of the game mechanics, with some real world city related essays and drawings in the back.

Civ 3: 225+ page manual covering all the complex mechanics (hilariously has a MOO3 ad on the back)

Civ 2 Test of Time: same

MOO2: 160+ page manual describing all the mechanics including a detailed tech tree

Arcanum: 180+ page manual including skill and spell lists.

Fallout 2: 160+ pages. really high quality paper and quality artwork throughout, making it look like a rugged old bloodied notebook you found in a ruin somewhere. (fallout 1 was similar if I recall)

Unnatural Selection (Maxis game about directed evolution): 125+ pages including 16 science experiments to try listed at the back.

Also a ~100 page manual for SimTower, SimLife, and SimCity Classic

Also have a 425+ page manual that came with Interplay 15th anniversary collection.

(have dozens and dozens more manuals, but these are the best ones.)

I'm just talking about a manual you can fit in the left slot (for a disc game) or in a standard-sized box

I highly doubt that anyone who is saying they miss reading manuals is talking about the useless things that came in CD cases.

other great examples of manuals are from Master of Orion 2, SimCity 2000, Civilization games which also came with full color charts. BG2 and IWD also came with cloth maps, though they weren't very useful. Skyrim came with a paper map. Morrowind came with the most useful paper map I've ever seen a game have. (anyone playing Morrowind today and constantly getting lost, maybe you're missing the map!)

again, it takes a complex enough game in the first place to warrant a good manual. your example of Half Life 2 is ridiculous considering how absurdly shallow the game is.

these days, I could imagine games from Paradox and Amplitude coming with great manuals worth reading. the only problem is that, especially for Paradox games, these days these kinds of games evolve too much after release. even if they came with great manuals, they'd be obsolete pretty quickly.
