Opinion? Such things are incredibly clear. Russians were asked by Assad to help him out. Plus, while he's in power, they have their Mediterranean port in Syria. Furthermore, keeping the Qatar gas pipeline project from materialising (which would be much harder to do if an anti-Russian government replaced Assad's) is beneficial to them as they remain without viable competition in supplying natural gas to Europe.

They're probably enjoying the chance to demonstrate their military potential, too, but that's just a bonus.

It makes zero sense for the Syrians to do it, Trump just said he'd get the troops out of Syria, so Assad, who's obviously not happy with US troops on his soil, rushes to give him an excuse to stay? Yes, it's not impossible, but it would be completely idiotic, and you don't last for so many years of US and US-supported factions trying to remove you from power by being an idiot.
