I know I posted this on the comment section itself, but video games as a whole don't always have accessibility in mind. I want to work as an occupational therapist (and even specialize in vision accommodation), so seeing video games in this light is very important to me. I empathize with the struggle your friend deals with. It's not something readily noticeable but the effects ARE truly there once people understand the diagnosis.

Thank you for doing an episode like this. "Universal design" means making something that everyone can access. Someday, video games might get to that point.

The ENDING of Secret of Mana on the PS4! With the way the dungeon is, I managed to pull out a full on review before the final bosses. A lot of the criticisms are nothing new, but I feel the game should be applauded for doing SOME quality of life things and new story bits right. That is the first bit of the video. If you're only interested in that, it stops around the 20-25 minute mark or so. The next 20 minutes are the final bosses, and I stopped my commentary so the ending could be played as is.

I also snuck in the name of my next playthrough right before the end credits, so it's an incentive (if people even watch that far). The raw footage was 1:20:00, so I did what I could to manage an hour video...still a journey.

Anyway, next new game is Friday, a day I usually don't upload on (got lucky with my schedule).

It's the first game of 4. And yes, I'm playing them all. I would bet this will take me 80-100 episodes. Secret of Mana though; that might get finished (for real) by next week. I already have my next game picked out.

I'm going to be curious to see if there is extra traffic for this one. This is the first "ending" of a franchise since beginning advertising. I would definitely suggest watching it, because I don't feel there's that much to be spoiled other than "HOLY SHIT BIG BAD BOSS FIGHT!"

Besides, it has one of the best credits songs I've ever heard. I even shut myself up just so that song could play. Vol. 2 starts up next week.

This is not only a big fight in the game, but it features spoilers for the original quadrilogy (basically the first four games before this sequel came out). The games aren't tied to one another, but stuff in G.U. is kind of an easter egg for fans of the original. It was the best I could do to say, "If you ever want to play these, then don't get spoiled here." If not, all they do is help flesh out the boss QUITE a bit.

3 is one of my favorite RPGs. Like one of those junk food things that I keep going back to despite it being REALLY bad at a lot of things. I would replay that 50 times over instead ot touching 4 (which I gave up after seeing Lymle, that stupid first dungeon, and what they did to Welch). I suppose I saved myself 50-100 hours of pain stopping so early. 5 is kind of weird and short and has terrible budget problems, but the battles are everything I wanted FFXII and XIII to be: a crazy mess of people and enemies on screen doing goofy shit.

But yeah, 3. 3 does things great once Cliff & Nel show up, right until Disc 2 chucks itself down a toilet.

The concept of 5's boss was interesting, but if the different statuses don't work, his strategy falls apart. After that, it's mostly dealing with each part having different resistances, because the attacks themselves are small damage when compared to, "TWO AOE ATTACKS IN A TURN BECAUSE FINAL BOSS DEAD." Not saying P4's was hard either. It just had a simpler method of wrecking the party.

My main problem is due to his attack pattern, I'm usually forced into using two White Mages (or at least a backup healer). It just seems like overkill.

Fine...let me take a different approach. What about the boss is difficult? How much does he hit for, and is it something Yuna can't just Revive or Cure away in a turn? Even without abusing the Summon mechanics, he never struck me as anything close to a "One Hit Kill" machine or status abuser. I wouldn't even classify it as a war of attrition like say III or IV's final bosses. The most I've seen it do is a fancy AOE that MIGHT kill a party member. The game makes a huge show of it, but it was never anything close to what Yunalesca did in comparison.

That's hardly post-game material. You can send Yuna down a strength path about midway, and getting Bahamut practically breaks the game. But even without that, what does the final boss do: hit hard? The most I've seen him do an AOE or two. I have so much harder times with V or IX's bosses, because they offer crazy status effect mechanics that prove VERY problematic no matter what party setup. The fact X allows you to swap out party members changes things for the party's favor more than any skill would.

Oh, I forgot Persona 5. After having such great final boss music and ideas for 3&4 (3 is thematic, 4 is just trying to stomp you), 5's boss has REALLY bad final boss music when compared to the other boss themes. While having a unique battle mechanic, the boss so weak, it never feels like a threat.

Just like the dungeon, Legend of Mana really suffers. The boss doesn't do anything remotely dangerous, and it just feels more like a thematic boss than anything, The Mana Tree itself wants to fight you, but the actual boss representation is some flower goddess...thing that doesn't look threatening at all. A far cry from a Mana Beast.

FFX never works well at any point because there are so many failsafes.

Ultimate Weapons
Yuna + Strength + Summons = Everything dies in 1-2 hits (or Passado which is like 20)
Any multi-hit limit break

Mix probably has something that screws with the final boss

VIII's final boss can be broken over a barrel, but at least it tries to use a crazy skill that sets everyone at 1 HP.

Oh, I remember another one: Legend of Mana. Each of the three story arcs have what would easily qualify as final dungeons. But when you get around to the finale, the dungeon is super short in comparison, and the final boss is pretty weak.

I forget if it was the last or second to last dungeon, but I remember FFXII having something like 70-100 floors or something dumb. I'm sure it included an elevator or something, but it was still tortuous. It's a weird one, because the final boss isn't technically fought there.

FFIII is without a doubt the worst.

Other ones I hated were Radiata Stories and Xenogears. Radiata had this mess of a climbing puzzle where if you go up the wrong ladder, it turns to sand and knocks you down a platform. In some cases, it knocks you all the way back to the start. It's basically saying, "OOPS DO THE DUNGEON OVER AGAIN!" Xenogears suffers from confusing layout, because I remember spending about 20-30 minutes doing random battles over and over because I couldn't find the way out. This from a game that had already decided to cut dungeons OUT because of budget.
