Board 8 > Which star ocean should I buy

I'm a tiny bit drunk

JUST drunk enough to buy a star ocean. I actually really liked 3, it's one of my favorite games but I've beat it enough times in my life (although it'd be nice to play it without having to switch discs)

4 is really bad I hear, but I think the gameplay is a bit more "safe" and typical of a star ocean game

5 I've heard is more mediocre and forgetable, which is not really what I'm looking for. I'd rather have a sucky game with good features.

Star Ocean 3 is on my digital game pile. Maybe I'll get to it some day.

3 is still the best overall I enjoy it's dumb story and characters and it's 300 battle trophies are fair and varied but that battle system is a janky ass mess

4 definitely goes for it but it stumbles at every step along the way but those 900 battle trophies are almost the same 100 for all nine characters. The battle system is solid though

5's production value is way below what you would expect of a current game but the battle system I think is better than 3 or 4 and I would recommend it if you're looking for a purely gameplay experience. There's only 100 battle trophies though and their own much easier in comparison to 3 and 4

But it's also a shame that the HD version of the PSP remake of Star Ocean 2 never came out in English because I would recommend that over all of them

3 is one of my favorite RPGs. Like one of those junk food things that I keep going back to despite it being REALLY bad at a lot of things. I would replay that 50 times over instead ot touching 4 (which I gave up after seeing Lymle, that stupid first dungeon, and what they did to Welch). I suppose I saved myself 50-100 hours of pain stopping so early. 5 is kind of weird and short and has terrible budget problems, but the battles are everything I wanted FFXII and XIII to be: a crazy mess of people and enemies on screen doing goofy shit.

But yeah, 3. 3 does things great once Cliff & Nel show up, right until Disc 2 chucks itself down a toilet.

I enjoyed both 3 and 4 a lot, fun battle systems. Plots are... Tri-Ace plots which means they have some neat ideas but the execution can be a bit wobbly, to put it mildly. Solid casts though.

Haven't played 5.

Glad to see I'm not the only person who bases purchasing decisions on "Is Laura in this game?".

I'd have bought SO4 anyway, because I love Star Ocean (2 is the best, BTW), but Infinite Undiscovery would have remained infinitely undiscovered if Ms. Bailey had not provided voicework.

Although in recent years, my criteria has expanded to "How many Critical Role cast members are in this game". SO4 then gets extra credit for having the hero voiced by Matt Mercer.

so star ocean 4 is surprising me in how difficult it is early on. Even going 90% of the battles without taking damage, I had to face the first boss at 25% health since there was no opportunities to heal without walking back to the ship. Then the game offers to fly you back to base and the main character says "no need! I'll enjoy the walk" so i had to walk back to the ship with 10% health, no save points between.

Usually when games do that it means they want you to run into a cutscene or find something in the alternate route back

but apparently this one was just busywork to pad the game. That's not a super great sign of the game to come.

So far my favorite part is edge finds an injured dude on the ground who says "hey we took a piece of the meteor in our ship and it resulted in me having to blow up the ship."

and then Edge asks "Why???" and shakes him so hard he literally kills him.

and then Edge finds a piece of meteor on the ground and decides to take it back to the ship.
