Yeah and it was dumb to say the word given how sensitive our current world is. But I'd argue that simply saying the word in this context shouldn't be the mortal sin that people say it is. You guys are giving that word an awful lot of power.

Forget the word itself for a moment, I'd argue that regardless, the context he was using it in is troubling enough.

To be honest, I figured people would be upset if he actually CALLED black people that word, but... you can't even just say the word, just itself, anymore? This is some Voldemort-level shit.

The context in which he used the word was literally "Well he got to say this mean thing about them, why can't I say mean things too"

I mean thats bad enough, regardless of whether he actually called a specific person the word.

I wouldn't be surprised if the thought of "Well Colonel Sanders got to call them n-words, why can't I?" came to his mind.

How? It was an irrelevant point that mostly seemed to exist just to say the N-word. He didnt call anyone it but whats the point in pretending he didnt say it?

Based on what I'm reading it feels like he's saying "Well Colonel Sanders got to call em n-words and didn't get backlash!! Why don't I get to complain about about them!?"

Yeah I'd say that counts as using it.

No one ever said it was a "common" thing (although common is a relative term). We said it was a thing. You said that it wasn't. Don't change the story now.

Uh you posted three posts. The last two weren't insults. There's a difference between being passive aggressive, (one of which you happen to be doing right now) and direct insults.
The first one you posted WAS after he made the asshole and go fuck yourself statement.
Honestly, you're being awfully defensive with factually wrong examples yourself for someone who was clearly making really stupid posts and doubling down on it. I wonder why Anyway If all you have against me is the tone of my (admittedly impatient, but he doesn't deserve any patience) posts then you've got nothing else to say. I really don't give a shit about his sensibilities.

Let me be a bit clearer, the first quote I posted was just to quote you saying that he was the first to insult so you would know what I was responding to. When I said " both of the the above could be considered insults" I was specifically referring to the bottom two quotes of my post. So to be clear, I was not referring to the first quote when I said "especially the first" I was referring specifically to the 2nd quote". Yeah that's a bit confusing and I probably should have been clearer, my mistake

And how am I being passive aggressive? I'm just having a conversation here. I'm not defending the contents of his posts, just showing that you (now admittedly) were at a minimum being a bit harsh to someone who at that point hadn't insulted you, which might make the asshole comment an accurate one. You can wonder why all you want, I was just hopefully getting you to do a bit of introspection but it appears you don't really care so whatever at this point.

Both of what I posted were posts by you BEFORE he called you an asshole.

And I have a hard time seeing how those aren't insults. You're basically insulting his intelligence in a roundabout way. Either way they were certainly not needed and I'd think the assessment of "asshole" after those two statements would be one most would agree with. This coming form someone that knows nothing else about the two of you.

I'd much rather do that than waste money on batteries.

rechargable aas will last you many years and only cost a few bucks per battery. and another downside to built-in batteries - when the controllers internal battery inevitably dies, your controller is worthless unless you get it repaired

Yes we can use that logic about literally anything. That's exactly why the point you and he were making is bullshit. When talking about slavery you can state "slavery" should have never been an issue, ok, that does nothing and means absolutely nothing when it's a issue that has already been corrected.

We I stated "it doesn't matter whether it was 2016 or 10 years ago" I was talking specifically about the inaccurate info being put into textbooks. Here, you seem to be talking about slavery itself.

weekoldhotdog posted...
Wow, he really can't understand the consiquences of teaching a class by a erronious text book can lead to youths growing up with ideals and notions about slavery that never existed. As long as the books themselves are corrected, the minds of the youth are also retroactively corrected to unlearn the misinformation (such as the treatment of slaves being like "prized livestock" rather than inhuman slavery)

Basically they create you. The type of person that argues fact over the internet with people when you are neither a legislature, a governor, a lawyer, or hell, even a teacher, meaning that our breath is literally WASTED on you because even if you were to be like "ooooooooh" it wouldn't made any difference. The damage these books and teachers have caused will be done.

Pretty much. On an even broader note though, shit like this is the type of stuff that disallows people to understand exactly how terrible the black American experience was from the birth of this country through the heyday of the civil rights movement and how it affects people even to this day. Because accurate descriptions of exactly how bad it was back then is either glossed over or downplayed. This is why it annoys me so much and why we should work harder to ensure that crap like this doesn't happen to begin with, not just try to sweep it under the rug as "not mattering" after we've supposedly made effort to correct the issue.

I'm not trying to be extremely technical. He just literally stated opposite things. The premise of his first post was based upon the fact that this is a problem because they still exist all over the South today. This notion was refuted in his own post.

Now your point that you're trying to make of it doesn't matter if it was 2016 or today it never should have happened is just totally and completely ridiculous. There's a billion issues that never should have happened, what's important about them is whether or not there have since been steps that have been taken to correct them.

In this case there has already been steps that have been taken that completely corrected the issue.

This is why his post and your post are totally fucking stupid.

Except you're still missing the overall larger point here. Books that inaccurately portrayed the true state of slavery existed in modern times. This goes along with the theme presented earlier of people re-writing history to suit their own agenda. Whether or not that was the text string specifically that he was quoting is irrelevant, it's a theme presented in the topic and I'm looking at the issue though full context of the topic.

And it does matter that books like that should have never been created in the first place because even if they took steps to correct the issue after the fact, it says something that the books got out there with that message to begin with. I'm not about to give kudos to them for correcting mistakes that very obviously shouldn't have been made in the first place. This calls into question the motivations, integrity and intelligence of the people meant to help educate our youth. It shows that even in modern times, educators are looking to downplay or dismiss certain aspects of history. That means that the people meant to educate our youth are stupidly putting shit out there that is blatantly incorrect and even if they have corrected it the damage is already done. That curriculum has already been taught and undoubtedly there are people that might subscribe to those laughably false beliefs, and they have every reason to because they were taught from what are supposed to be believable sources. That matters.

So I will say it again, whether or not there are books out there in 2018, I honestly don't know but the fact that books with that information even existed 5 years ago is very troubling and no, they should have never existed.

And your dumbass point about a billion things that shouldn't have happened is irrelevant. We could use that logic about literally anything.

They have textbooks all over the south right now in 2018 claiming slaves were immigrants and workers and treated fairly.

They were recalled by McGraw Hill. The very same books portrayed poor whites as abused indentured servants.

These two posts literally say exact opposite things.

Which is it? Are they all over the South right now in 2018, or were they recalled?

We're not your damn slaves. Google your own research if you care to no longer, not be "in the know". Otherwise, stop misrepresenting something you're 100% wrong about.

He's trying to be extremely technical and win with a "gotcha" about the wording. I don't know if all the books were recalled by McGraw Hill or not but assuming that's true, he's going for the "See this isn't true in 2018, that was back in 2016!!" as if that defeats the larger point, that there shouldn't have been any books out there to begin with stating these things, especially in modern times. Doesn't really matter if it was this, year, last year, or 10 years ago.

I honestly hate the idea of alimony, but I can actually agree that this is at least reasonable and makes sense in some situations and it pretty much is the conclusion I've always personally agreed to be the fairest regarding alimony. Although I would say there should maybe be a 6 month to 2 year limit, and a reasonable amount. It should really only apply if one spouse was out of work and was a stay at home spouse for a long time. Give them 6 months to two years to figure out a plan, begin to gain skills, etc. None of that "must maintain the same lifestyle" BS, or lifetime payment BS.

If I had to guess, he probably just didn't go through updating his will yet before he died, I mean it's not like he knew he was going to die.

Or maybe he didn't want to leave the mom any money, which is also reasonable. It's possible he had a conversation with his family about taking care of his kid if he were to die, or perhaps it was assumed.

Either way, she doesn't deserve a thing, hopefully the family steps up and helps though.

The fuck? The Judge should have thrown the case out for a waste of time.

Can't do that if the complaint has merit. In Georgia, according to the law, it did.

Of course you'd think that.

Because that's how the law works.

Law isn't a science. A lot of the law such as merit is subjective.

Merit
noun.
the quality of being particularly good or worthy, especially so as to deserve praise or reward.

And who determines that? That's right - the judge.

Bro be honest, you don't really care. If the roles had been reversed in this instance, you would be here talking about how stupid it is and mocking him for hurt feelings and political correctness, etc.

I would have to imagine that the alt-righter that's currently benefiting from this law would normally be against such a thing....correct?

We were led to believe so, yes.

Interesting how that works

The insulting words statute was first passed as part of the 1810 Anti-Dueling Act. The Anti-Dueling Act provided that All words which, from their usual construction and common acceptation, are construed as insults, and tend to violence and breach of the peace, shall be actionable. Today, over 200 years later, the language of the statute is virtually unchanged. Times have changed, but Virginia law still prohibits the utterance of words that are so insulting and offensive that the average person, upon hearing them, is likely to react with violence. Insulting-words jurisprudence has evolved over the years as a form of defamation law.

I would have to imagine that the alt-righter that's currently benefiting from this law would normally be against such a thing....correct?
