Tuck your chin in all the way to your chest and look up at the kids while you try to scowl, look menacing, and smile. Don't stop. Eye contact with the children is key. If they still approach you or your dog, sing "All Around the Mulberry Bush" softly with your teeth clenched, still smiling.

If that doesn't work, I don't know what to tell you.

Totally. I thought he was a master troll going out of his way to be a disagreeable jerk, but it turns out he just had dumb opinions and no self-awareness. It took him forever to realize he had alienated virtually everybody by continually picking fights left and right.

some people even tried to see his side, to try and be friends with him because they felt so bad about him and wanted to help him

yeah it didn't work

This was me. I tried to be nice to him (at first). Every once in a rare while he would make a smart ass remark that held a shred of truth to it, and then he came out swinging at the one poster who agreed with him and used their opinion to bolster his own fat ego while simultaneously treating his defender like the paper towel he just used to squash a bug.

He was quick to point out the hypocrisy in others, but he was arguably one of the biggest hypocrites on this board.

Yeah. I cope by just remembering to appreciate every moment and allowing myself to disconnect by playing a video game or something. I think it's dangerous to disconnect completely, but it's a nice bandaid while you allow time to play its role in the healing process. It's sad, but if we did not know what it meant to be sad, we would not understand happiness. Still scares the shit out of me when I'm standing in the ICU thinking thoughts like "well, this will be everybody someday in some fashion."

Just unpleasant thoughts. I find comfort in the fact that he went quickly and painlessly. My heart aches most for my grandmother, but I find comfort in knowing she has 6 kids who are there for her.

Lost my granddad yesterday. All 6 of his kids were there, and most of the grandkids who could make it. My mom and dad were both there too. It was a very full ICU room despite protocol.

2 nights ago, he told my grandmother "I don't think something's right. I think I need to go to the hospital." They called an ambulance and off he went. He was a very healthy looking 77 yr old guy for his age with a history of heart problems-- 6 known heart attacks, tougher than nails. He said this time it felt different.

We took turns saying our "hang in there, Granddad, we're here for you"s, and it was the most peaceful passing I'd ever witnessed. He was so doped up on morphine, he wasn't in pain and he was still conscious enough to say he loved everyone individually. (Barely, but he managed.) He muttered it and could barely get anything out other than heavy noise, but the fact he was aware of us surprised me the most... this was an hour before he went.

Long story short... I'll leave out the details about the HR monotor and why it got turned off-- surgery was not an option and he was on the Do Not Recessitate plan, a nurse came in and checked his pulse and said he passed.

Not making this post to commemorate him or expect "sorry for your loss," but man... my poor grandmother. They were married like 55 years. Did everything together. She had my dad when she was like 17 and married at that time too.

He was her best friend. I had seen close death before and wasn't all that visibly choked up, but the hardest part was saying goodbye to my grandmother. It felt like I was looking right through her. She was trying so hard to say she loved us and was so tired from the ordeal. Nurses had to come in for her because she said she felt really light headed and dizzy, and I was hoping it wouldn't end up like some "The Notebook" shit right then and there.

Back to the topic title, death really messes with my head because I can't believe how envious I get of people who can believe in Heaven. I don't want this to get into a religious argument, so please nobody make it one, but all I guess I wanted to kind of ramble about is how much I sometimes wish that my perception is wrong.

I am an extremely level headed person; I accept death, it's natural as much as it sucks; and I'm quite fluent in dark humor and laugh everything off when it's appropriate, but I can't imagine the day if I have to watch my wife die instead of vice versa... as an example.

How relatively easy by comparison it would be to let go (still be sad, of course) and believe your best friend was in a better place instead of non existent. To watch your best friend get laid to rest while you live out the rest of your years.

I'm not afraid of death. I'm afraid of the parts before it and after it.

Thanks for the input, and I don't think I meet the criteria for a therapist. I think I want to help myself by helping other people.

I'm extremely happy in my marriage. I have the best wife ever who lets me just be me, she's my best friend, and I can talk to her about anything (including this-- to an extent, in bits and pieces, not all the time, and reasonably so).

I have a stellar job I've worked up to for years. I'm a programmer/system administration, get to do what I want to do since college...

Renting an awesome apartment/townhome while I comfortably pay off my student loans, save money, and pay all my bills.

Plenty of time for video games, studying courses through my job when I want, going outside, playing music, seeing friends, and reading.

To top it off, I've enjoyed pursuing health. I enjoy fasting, meditating, and I've noticed huge differences in my skin. Used to be gluten intolerant for 7 years and after months of water fasting and quitting dairy, I've reset my immune system, I guess...? I'm enjoying bread and sandwiches again with no bloating or stomach aches anymore. I've lost weight I didn't know I had to lose. I went from 150 lbs to 130 lbs at 5'9". I feel healthier than ever. I'm on no medications at all.

Only threw that last part in because a lot of people associate depression with eating/anxiety disorders, which can be true in many cases.

I've got it made.

I have nothing-- NOTHING-- no right to complain. But I feel like we all have a bigger purpose, and yet... I just see wasted potential everywhere and it is seriously depressing. People bitch about the stupidest shit. It's easy to let it slide when you hear a small group, office talk, whatever, but everywhere...

I don't want to live on this planet anymore. We could use technology to make lives so much better. But we don't use our resources efficiently enough. Or it's stifled/suppressed for power and control.
