It's a pattern of poor decision making and a lack of willpower that creates a perfect storm for that behaviour to manifest. People blame it on mental illness... well, I'm bipolar 1 (officially diagnosed) and have never been plagued with a drug or alcohol addiction. I'm too proud to let myself become a tweaked out monster that brings shame upon my family. My great-grandfathers didn't get wounded on the Western Front then return to work just so I could wimp out and sit at home intoxicated all day.
