I'm not an English teacher, but the reasoning is fairly obvious. The goal isn't to just read for the sake of reading. It's to open up discussion and analysis of literary themes that are already established.

So curriculums are already pretty hashed out and developed from classic literature. Some modern young adult series may not contain certain vocabulary or literary themes that they are trying to emphasize, in addition to the fact that the teacher would have to have already read said book in order to teach about said themes.

Given everyone's different tastes, it's not resourceful to tackle everyone's interests, or otherwise it turns into some soft assignment where you read and write a report on it and the teacher just has to take your stuff at face value, which doesn't have as much meaning compared to whether or not you understand certain well-known literary devices, themes, etc that can be less subjectively graded.

Sure, it's drudgery to go through some of the common titles, but it's a matter of resources. No one has the time to teach to each student's reading interests individually, while also having the depth required.

That is not how insulin resistance works. It's a bit contradictory to lead with "could enter pre-diabetes", then hedge it later with "I didn't say it was likely."

A meteor could hit Earth tomorrow. What's the value of that statement?

An uncontrolled diabetic could get into diabetic ketoacidosis or a hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state from such a diet in that time frame, but that's because of the nature of their disease process already. A non-diabetic is not going to develop insulin resistance from a week of only skittles. If the threshold was that low, literally everyone on the planet would be diabetic.

Someone that is frequently told not to break the board's rules should have a harsher punishment than someone that hardly ever breaks them.

I think there's a dangerous precedent with that though. Take this case for example. I have literally never posted a tinyURL link here, let alone one that actually has intent to mess with people. As such, I think this should be treated differently because it's something I've quite literally never done before.

I do agree that posting history should matter, but only if it's in the case of repeat offenses for the same issue. Like if someone gets NWD'd for trolling, then NKL'd for trolling, then obviously a warn makes sense if they troll again, because they're clearly not trying to follow the rules.

But encompassing the entirety of one's posting history into one umbrella just doesn't justify a harsher punishment for what is essentially a first time offense in this case. My history, for example, has one NKL for illegal activities (a copy-pasta that had a reference to a drug that I forgot to edit out), an NKL for calling someone a troll (even though all I said was that I was tagging a user as a troll, not actually calling him/her a troll), and now a warn for something I've never done before, which has been proven to not be an auto-warn because the creator of the original topic was not warned.

Like it doesn't make sense to use "repeat offender" as a blanket statement when the contents of the history aren't taken into account.

Your first step is to take a few steps away from the keyboard.

Go outside, breathe some fresh air, and take CE a little less seriously.

Secondly, "officer, but he was speeding too!" Someone getting 'away with' something against TOS does not justify you getting away with it either. PotD is a lower volume board and the message most likely was not marked. It's not like it's these moderator's day jobs. It's a volunteer service. The fact it got taken down implies the moderation staff is at least consistent with what they view to be disruptive.

Sure, personally, I don't think it's that disruptive in the context of April Fools. That's not my call. At the end of the day, this is a dying message board with imaginary internet points for logging on and this level of obsession is an unhealthy habit.

I tried playing it. Horribly optimized, framerate tanks to like 2 virtually all the time on PS4. Quests and zones are really bland and uninspiring. Like it makes you turn in quests with like 3 nearby NPCs for fetch quests that I don't care about and just skip the conversation. The combat is animation locked, so it can get a bit clunky. The leveling if you do the weird battleground with the sumo babies is super fast. I almost got a max level in like 2 days.

I imagine the game opens up a bit at 65, but damn, between all the weird ass lolis, the overbearing scantily-clad women as if the game was designed by a repressed 12 year old, and lack of any real engaging content, I don't think I'll pick this up any longer.

I don't get why a 29 year old would want to date an 18 year old. She can be "mature for her age" or whatever, but she hasn't really lived or experienced much in comparison. Literally fresh out of high school. How immature/sheltered is the guy that he could actually be a potential match for her?

I can see wanting to nail a hot piece of ass, but the idea of being around the typical 18 year old for any length of time when you're nearly 30 is weird. They're pretty much all completely insufferable.

This. They're obviously children even if they're an adult by definition.

As we get older, that same age gap is fine, but that's because the sea of adult experiences is so vast, having any amount of that experience makes you relatable. But like someone else in the thread said, when he was 18, the girl was 7. If he doesn't get frustrated at the rites of passages that girl will be going through, the values she'll have at that age, etc, he's been emotionally and intellectually stunted for a decade. Huuuuuuge red flag.

See, this was thematically very obvious, but gets overlooked.

It's because star wars fans will be inherently impossible to please. Half of them want some deep, symbolic meaning. The other half just want demi-god style fighting to save the day. No subtext, just "epic, badass fights."

Except they detract from one another. If they appeal to both sides, you get a confused title that doesn't know what it wants to be. And if you go one or the other, the neglected side gets rabid.

This isn't incorporating the giant fucking mess that comes with injecting what star wars initially was--a black and white movie in the era of the Cold War, to what it has become, with fans injecting a life into the entire universe so fleshed out, it's impossible to do justice in a feature film.

I think I'm the only one who watched TLJ and didn't pop an aneurysm because it didn't conform to my expectations. It's not my favorite film, but I didn't emotionally invest so much that even the tiniest details would send me off going "reeeeeeee"

Autism is a spectrum, so this is kind of a vague question that really doesn't have a better answer than "it depends."

On the more milder forms, formerly known as Asperger's, and with either therapy or just simply practice in social situations, one can definitely navigate socially. Probably even just get away with being perceived as eccentric, or maybe a little odd, and that's it.

The bit about the computer isn't necessarily autism. Sounds more like an obsessive compulsive trait. Doesn't mean it qualifies as OCD, just that it's an obsessive quality.

You mentioned "really good with people" and yet you also bring up not picking up on social cues and overexplaining minutiae that people might not care about. Again, could be related to autism. Could be their personality.

"it depends"

Poles are the same racial group, so that undercuts your racism narrative.

Yes and no. When you compare mass immigration in the U.S. of Irish and Polish people, they were largely seen outside of "white", viewed more as unruly, uneducated laborers. Not unlike how latino/hispanic people are largely treated today.

The definitions of racial groups change over the years, and while Irish and Polish are seen as "white" these days, there certainly is an undertone when I interact with people. I look very polish. I have a very polish name. Interactions can definitely surround my ethnicity as people try to relate with that very specific identity, as opposed to someone of a more anglo-saxon background or mixed heritage. This is accentuated by the difference in language as well. I think there is a closer leap between the romance languages when you consider spanish, french, english compared with slavic languages.

Basically I'm as "foreign" as a "white" person can get and while it's never been an issue and I probably benefit from privilege more often then not, I also find I relate with some of my first-generation ethnic friends a bit more too. It's really hard to generalize "white" people because of how heterogeneous that group can be, but people can very easily latch onto polish generalizations.

I would not be surprised if there were some really conservative people in the UK who are slightly prejudiced against some of the polish workers in their country. I really think the comparison to how some people in the U.S. treat latinos is kind of the same, "not their country" "sending money away back home", "unruly, criminals" etc, etc.

Multiplayer-wise, Rainbow Six Siege had a rocky start, but they really invested in it and it's in a much, much better place now. I haven't played the Division, but I've heard kind of the same thing about that now versus at release.

So while it might be irresponsible to release unfinished or buggy games, at least they invest in their games down the line and don't give up. Compare that to Activision that pumps out a new CoD yearly and has an obvious shelf life of a year.

Haven't played PUBG. Apparently it has some optimization issues as well as hackers and aim botters. It'll appeal to you if you prefer more of the realistic graphics, and I think the gunplay seems more fun. Map is larger and matches draw out a bit longer.

Fortnite is free. Graphics are cartoony, so that might be a detractor for you. The building aspect is there, but it's not like super intricate at all. Muscle memory pretty much servers in order to make a mini fort near endgame, or stairs to ambush someone else's fort. I've won games purely hiding in bushes so its not like building is mandatory. The gunplay leaves one wanting more. Matches are a bit quicker.

My vote is fortnite simply because it's free and accessible, so if you don't like the genre it's not much of a loss other than time. PUBG could be a wasted 30 dollars.

If it's any consolation, if the word keeps being used in the context that embodies a spectrum and not an all-or-nothing designation of character, the word will lose it's power.

That's not necessarily a bad thing if that's the trend of the language. That's what languages do. They evolve.

For the time being, if you feel someone is disingenuous with the accusation and they aren't using the word "appropriately" why does their opinion matter? Fuck them. Honestly. Who cares? Let it roll off you. Don't bog yourself down with the low hanging fruit.

This won't be the only example of someone misrepresenting an issue. If you understand the range of egregiousness of racial prejudices, you ought not to feel badly when someone invalidly applies the label to you. That being said, are you being painstakingly honest with yourself that that is actually the case, and you aren't downplaying it? Because the other side of that coin exists too and sometimes people just aren't consciously aware of behavior that simply isn't well accepted anymore.

So to you racism is any prejudice based on race. With that understanding, even innocuous things people have prejudices about would be labeled racist. And thats why Im uncomfortable having such a loose understanding of racism, because calling someone racist is one of the most serious accusations against someone, it should be reserved for something horrific, not for harmless on insignificant prejudices

Also, what about positive prejudices. If I said Asians are good at academics is that racist as well?

Look, the whole issue is a spectrum. Everyone can spot the obvious instances of racism, but a lot of things that are typically derived from stereotypic automatic assumptions we make, in order words, implicit associations are a form of "racism."

Now, most reasonable people will recognize that literally everyone has implicit biases and these aren't always consciously apparent. That being said, every one of us could apply in practice a bit more conscientiousness, an awareness, an effort to make adjustments so we don't make those implicit, more milder forms of "racism."

That being said, making the assumption of someone being good academically is the same thing. Even if 50% of all asians are "bad drivers" (ignoring the subjective judgement this may be), 50% wouldn't be bad drivers, so you have a coin flip's chance of coming off as a dipshit with that assumption. A buddy of mine got asked if he liked math during his medical school interview. He hasn't even taken calculus. The former and the latter here is not that different, other than you thinking assuming their good academics is "positive."

The point being here is that, sure, you can make the assumption that asians as a generalization might hold education as a cultural value, but any specific assumption made at the individual level is probably best avoided. Since exceptions apply, unless you're working in a field where time-sensitive or life-and-death scenarios predicates the need to risk stratify things, it's a lot easier to start off everyone with the benefit of the doubt regarding stereotypes.

Don't make this more complicated. Making a "transgression" on the milder side of things doesn't equate you to racists who go out of their way to harm people solely off of a difference in some type of group. But it's a bit too forgiving to ignore the implicit biases we hold.

Conservatively, it might take a generation, but generally speaking the children of the immigrants tend to want to assimilate more in order to not outcast themselves from society.

My parents came from Poland. I got made fun of any time I expressed any of that Polish culture growing up as a young kid. I erred more to the side of American culture and you wouldn't think twice of my heritage if not for my last name, given how I conduct myself. As such, most of my friends are 1st gen Americans. It doesn't matter if they're from Iraq, Syria, China, Argentina, whatever. We're all much more "American" than our parent's respective cultures. And my muslim friends are really no different than my christian friends. They practice their faith individually and respect others to practice theirs. And my muslim friends take no issue with my atheism.

It's when people come in with the assumption that their culture is inherently violent and harmful that shit becomes a problem. It's not that simple, but I see the shit my muslim friends get slung on an almost daily basis from really hateful people. Just fucking get along. it's not that hard.
