I think you're overstating how highly it's praised.
It's a must read . . . for kids. It's a great book on race, class, the American south, etc but again, it's an introductory book. A "safe" way and dipping their toes into the subject matter and exposure to racial slurs.
There's a reason it's usually required reading in schools but not talked about a lot afterwards.

The movie however . . . well Atticus deserves the spot on AFIs top movie heroes.
