No, we absolutely shouldn't.

this bugs me

by saying we should assume crimes against officers have increased 20% he's making a pretty dubious assumption

let's ignore the fact that better recording practices lead to more crimes being noticed for a bit

he's assuming all demographics are suffering a uniform increase in crime, but there's no evidence to indicate that since the 20% increase in reported crime is a number without detail/context.

example: There could be multiple demographics that saw a decrease in crime, but the overall number increased because of other demographics having large spikes in crime. It depends on the numbers

it could also be dependent on where in the UK the crimes occurred, and it could be heavily influenced by terror stats (and by admission of his own link, several aspects of the crime rate ARE influenced by terror incidents that would naturally tick them upward, and those incidents already involve armed officers)

like, if we've seen a 20% increase in crimes against officers, ignoring reporting vs. victimization, why hasn't that been reflected by homicides? That's my point in looking into the Roll of Honor data. Homicides against UK police appear to be very low, so if the violent crime rate against police has jumped a ton, why aren't more officers dying? This is what I mean about a lack of data. That's a piece of evidence that contradicts the idea that more officers in particular are suffering from violent crime.

If we're accounting for better reporting, that really doesn't mesh at all with the idea that officers suffer from more violent crime. If it's simply a matter of better recording, that means the UK is collecting more info on crimes that it previously couldn't, implying officers were not involved.

Alternatively, part of the increase could be, if I'm understanding the Guardian article correctly, that officers themselves are reporting assaults on themselves from criminals more often. If they were under-reported before but are more reported now by choice among officers, that would mean the victimization rate hasn't necessarily gone up, rather than officers are just more willing to report assaults. This is assuming any of this is the case, since my prior point on better recording (that Frolex pointed out to start with) already implies that 20% increase wouldn't apply to officers.

I've worked with stats on a basic level in E-sports before so I'm aware of how many variables and factors might exist with data. Assuming X is X based on one number that involves dozens of numbers without looking into the dozens of numbers for context can be very irresponsible if you're attempting to make policy decisions

I'm not sure about comparing US/UK stats either. Countries have different definitions for crimes. Sweden and Canada are good examples of this - Sweden has an abnormally high rape rate because it has a broader definition of rape, and Canada has a higher kidnapping rate than come third world nations because it has a broader definition that applies to child custody disputes

I don't know. That's why you examine the data, because the factors that give you the data are numerous, and certain increases in crime may be relegated to specific areas comparative to others. I don't know the regions where crime increased the most, I don't know the demographics, I don't know if those involved were already firearms specialists and thus were armed to begin with, etc.

a good example is if, say, increases may be related to the recent influx of terror incidents, which is something that was accounted for preemptively after the Paris attacks when more AFOs were introduced

Mal's number comes from police recorded crimes. Victimization surveys shows that crime has been on a steady decline over the period he's talking about, which would indicate the increase in that number is due at least in part to improvements police recording practices:
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-41149778

This is all probably a bit to nuanced for him to grok though, since he saw the figure "3x" on a webpage and now thinks Iceland is more criminal than Colombia and Saudia Arabia

If the overall violent crime rate rose by 20% in the UK in that one year, I think it's safe to say that violent crime against officers rose by a similar figure. Why wouldn't it?

a good example is if, say, increases may be related to the recent influx of terror incidents, which is something that was accounted for preemptively after the Paris attacks when more AFOs were introduced

There was a substantial increase of 64% (485 offences) in the number of attempted murder offences in the latest year. This rise is due largely to the London and Manchester terror attacks, where the police recorded 61% (294) of the rise in attempted murder offences.

I also looked into Roll of Honor, one of the resources link in the guardian article, and it lists UK officer deaths. I chose by year. There were 9 on record for 2017, but several of these are not related to crime.

-3 died of illnesses unrelated to crime

-4 died due to collisions. Two seem like accidents, two seem like drunk driving incidents (where the drunk drivers were NOT the officers)

-1 died from a fatal stabbing during the Westminster bridge attack

-1 died from being ran over intentionally, albeit this occurred in 2013 and he died in 2017

http://www.policememorial.org.uk/rollofhonour.php#

This means that one officer listed died from a crime committed in 2017 with intent to harm an officer. Two other criminal situations (drunk driving) killed officers, but the descriptions did not lead this to be intentional, making it unrelated to the subject of firearms usage.

You would think that if violence against officers increased alongside the violent crime rate that there would be multiple instances of officers who were killed in the line of duty as is often the case in the U.S.

It's possible Roll of Honor is incomplete, but the number of officers killed in the line of duty appears to be few and the most recent one that is clearly a criminal act targeting an officer may have been somebody who carried a firearm to begin with.

stats are really complicated and coming to multiple strong conclusions ("Violence is up > Violence against officers are up > officers need guns") is potentially dubious if the data given doesn't support each conclusion. I don't think the first gap is necessarily unreasonable, but their stats seemed to be strongly influenced by terror incidents, where the UK has already taken protective action involving firearms.

I should point out that I'm not really opposed to the idea but I'm not really sure if anything you've brought up follows with the idea of giving every British officer a firearm

in short - what I'm doing is I'm going to see of I can dig up any year-to-year crime stats specifically relating to officer death/injury since that's the most relevant figure in determining whether or not police might require more firearms presence. One issue, of course, is I'm not sure of the data I look through includes the aforementioned AFOs mixed in with non-firearm carrying officers which is a relevant detail

i did some really basic research of this particular subject (i.e. arming uk officers)

-British officers aren't typically armed.

-There are a special class of officers trained and designated to carry firearms, so non-military authorities are armed.

From wikipedia's page on the AFO;

In 2014/15, there were 5,647 Authorised Firearms Officers and 14,666 police operations throughout England and Wales in which the deployment of firearms was authorised.[1] Following the November 2015 Paris attacks it was decided to significantly increase the numbers of armed officers, particularly in London.

Based on this, officers trained for more hostile situations have increased in recent years due to terror incidents. I'll link the whole page since there are a lot of divisions and here are stats as to where most reside;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authorised_firearms_officer

AFOs appear to be very rigorously tested and are continuously tested based on what the article says.

From the article on the Metropolitan Police Service, London's police group, is a section on specialist units:

Specialist Firearms Command (SCO19) Responsible for providing armed response and support across the whole of London with 3 Authorised Firearms Officers (AFO) travelling in ARVs (Armed Response Vehicles) responding to calls involving firearms and weapons, which may put a unarmed officers at risk. SCO19 has a small number of CTSFOs (Counter Terrorist Specialist Firearms Officers), who have a higher level of training.

Based on all of this (AFOs are everywhere in the UK based on their page) I would assume that a segment of the UK police do have people who carry firearms for more hostile situations, and the number of those in recent years has increased.

OP's case seems more isolated since it wasn't a mass shooter or guy who was acting rowdy with a firearm (both of which I assume would incur the usage of firearm-related units in the British police force)

This is a single incident and Mal appears to be using this as a frame to ask why the general police lack firearms since they would likely be useful in cases like this, but from what I can find, there aren't statistics to compare from year-to-year on incidents involving violence against non-AFO/firearm specialist officers.

There is this article that states as such:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/datablog/2015/oct/15/how-many-police-officers-harmed-line-of-duty

It is difficult to pin down an exact figure for the number of police officers injured in the line of duty, because of a lack of official statistics. However, a Home Office report released this year gives an estimate of 23,000 assaults against officers in 2014/15.

The figure is based on:

-Self-reported data, which does not include assaults that officers do not report. In some cases officers will choose not to report cases, as it is often not compulsory to do so. And not all forces provide this data in the same way.

-Police-recorded crime data. Forces supply the number of cases of assault without injury on a constable to the Home Office as part of their recorded crime data. This only includes assaults where no injury was involved.

-The figures for the forces that provide data have been used to calculate the 23,000 estimate for all forces. The Home Office hopes to publish a more robust set of numbers next summer.

It should be pointed out that from 2010-2015 (when this article was published) that 11 officers in the largest group of officers in the country (the Met) died, according to the article. I'll dig into some resources provided to see if I can get anything interesting out of this

What do you think of week-related restrictions (e.g. "20 week limit") or lifetime limitations? I don't (at this time) support these, but I strongly advocate for sex ed and contraceptive accessibility and mull over the idea of restricting abortion to case-by-case basis if we ever did manage to get a handle on most of the negatives caused by unwanted pregnancy.

They're in the wrong but I don't think this is a major issue. It's a debate over end-of-life care for a person who cannot be treated; that's entirely emotion-based. I've had to make that decision before and I understand if some people aren't ready for it, but some people in the topic are framing this as a "death court" and I frankly don't agree because the child is already dead for all intents and purposes.

disagree with UK courts but I don't see this as a huge issue when the kid is effectively dead anyway, I'm more concerned about whatever implications this case might have on other people seeking to travel for medical assistance who have a chance, though this is such an extreme case I'm not sure it'd be applicable to anything else

Actually, if you are under the age of about 50 or so, the opposite is true: men in their 20s who masturbate even two to seven times per week have a 79% higher risk of contracting prostate cancer by age 60 than men who masturbate less than once per month:

http://www.webmd.com/prostate-cancer/news/20090127/masturbation-and-prostate-cancer-risk

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19016689

Of course, if you are older than 50, it actually does lower your risk of prostate cancer, which is probably where this myth comes from. But for most of the people here, masturbation is actually unhealthy.

So it's not masturbation itself that's increasing prostate cancer risk in young men. More masturbation may just mean more sex drive -- and more androgens bathing prostate tissues.

Let's say the tape is real and he had hookers piss on a bed for whatever reason. Is he petty? Absolutely. Does that, by itself, make him bad as a person or does it make him threatening to the integrity of the office of the presidency? Not really.

I believe prostitution should be legal, for instance, so I don't think him having hookers do X assuming it's within the bounds of the law (or what would be the law past having hookers) is bad even if it's stupid. The worst he'd be guilty of is indecency or violating a hotel's policy. Nothing impeachable: just stupid, embarrassing, and unbecoming of an adult.

I think him having an affair while his wife was pregnant (or after she gave birth? either way) does demonstrate poor moral character. These issues typically take a backseat to policy, but I view people who do things like that very poorly. They are bad parents because they are risking the stability of their family for self-serving reasons in a society that is benefited by stable households.

Still. I don't think it's impeachable, and the hush money aspect is the real story assuming it's true.

The story here for me, whether or not this corroborates the dossier, is

-The Trump Admin's reaction to the raid and instant campaign to discredit Rod Rosenstein in a clear attempt to derail the investigation

-Cohen had something to hide and was lying about it, a poor look for the personal lawyer of the President, especially when that President reacts very defensively in favor of that lawyer (cronyism)

-The fact that he's fucking around with people he himself appointed in an effort to derail an investigation targeted at himself. Innocent people do not do this.

i didn't even believe the Russian collusion narrative for the longest time because it seemed outlandish but between the fact that interference occurred and Trump is actively shitting his pants over this and becoming increasingly less restrained leads me to believe that he's guilty of colluding or at the very least some financial crime relating to Russia

like the "my finances are crossing the line" shit. It's like saying "Yes, officer, you can investigate my house, but the basement is off limits". What fucking idiot would fall for that shit? lmfao

Why was he in Prague? Who did he meet with? How did he get there? What was discussed? Why lie about it?

also, these are all interesting details to come out of this

I really don't care about the pee tape

The fact that Cohen is under criminal investigation and the admin's reaction to the FBI raid was to have a shitfit by threatening the people running the Special Council is enough for me to know that Trump is guilty of something.

Having a salacious sex tape isn't illegal so I don't really give a shit about that detail.

just to make you, specifically, mad

i'm confused, not mad

i wouldn't be mad because i'm a liberal that would love to watch trump's presidency implode, something that firing rosenstein will aide in doing. which is why I'm confused, he's giving me what i want by speedrunning the "Corrupt Politician" class

like for real why give his political opponents a tangible reason to parade around

he can deny guilt now because he's simply being investigated

but if he dismantles the investigation, any reasonable person is going to assume guilt because there's no other reason to dismantle an investigation targeting yourself beyond you attempting to evade the consequences of what you did to get investigated to begin with (or attempting to evade what else they might find)

It's a given that he'll be fired at this point, but I really don't get why: It just gives more fodder for Democrats in the midterms when Republicans are already in for an uphill battle for congress while the Senate is becoming increasingly competitive due to the TN/WV races giving Dems a big bone to work with.

Trump does himself no favors. It just makes him look more corrupt, provides more Nixon parallels, and gives Dems a justifiable reason to label him guilty since he's actively impeding his own investigation.

dude is off his rocker

Naruto blows. For whatever reason, in part 2, the author shits all over the main theme that he established in part 1.

Part 1: "You don't need lineage to become something great!"

Part 2: "Well on second thought..."

this is one of the core reasons part 2 just doesn't work, and I think it goes past just the lineage thing. That could've been okay, but Naruto being an actual "child of destiny" is Kishimoto somehow missing the point of his own work and horribly contradicting it
