a lot less terrifying than it used to be at least

When it wasn't clearly understood how it was transmitted, and all people were really aware of was that there were zero chances of survival if you were infected, so no one wanted to take any chances with exposure -- I remember reading a news report that some paramedics refused to touch or even approach people suspected of having AIDS. It's hard for anyone who wasn't around at the time to imagine the climate of fear in the early days.

Probably wise advice. A movie should be judged on its own merits, not how well it stacks up against the source material.

It depends on whether you can acknowledge that a bad adaptation can be a good film.

I don't consider that fidelity to the original story (if that's what you mean by a "good" or "bad" adaptation) is an essential criterion on which to judge a movie as a movie.

I think it's more the fact that we have a long, long history. Yours is much shorter, so events like that seem more important to you.

Weren't we the first colony of theirs that won our independence?

The Thirteen Colonies were some of the earliest to be established and at the time they became independent, the British Empire was far, far smaller than it would be 150 years later. It wasn't the beginning of the end for the Empire -- it was the end of the beginning.

It gets mentioned in Key Stage 3 History textbooks, but it's about as significant to our national history as April 18, 1980 when Zimbabwe became independent. Consequently it gets relegated to the back of the bottom drawer of memory, except maybe during the occasional pub trivia quiz.

Most Brits these days probably aren't even able to pinpoint the significance of that year; and if you explained it to them, they'd just shrug and say, "Oh, right." We "carry a grudge" about it about as much as we carry a grudge over the return of Hong Kong to China. We're more likely to feel guilty for sending you Piers Morgan and James Corden. :-(
