Maybe the politest way to introduce the subject is to tell them when you were last tested, in case they're worried; the hint being that this is time for them to reciprocate and give you the same information about themselves. That's what I used to do, and my partners seemed to appreciate the gesture.

you are stunningly close to a revelation right now

You are, predictably, blinded by a near-sociopathic form of knee-jerk, Republican right-wing "patriotism" that renders you completely numb to the irony of how US foreign policy can create and feed the very monsters it most fears. If you put your money on violent opponents of reform, if you deny people an alternative to the government that exploits and abuses them, if you arm and support that government when it tries to murder them, you're going to drive them into the arms of the only people who offer them shelter, a gun, and a chance to fight back. Don't blame them if they feel less than picky, because not being picky about the kind of regimes you choose as your friends was Uncle Sam's lesson in democracy for Central America.

How many tortures, murders and "disappearances" of trade union activists, independent journalists, human rights workers, student protestors, peasant farmers and anyone else accused of "communist sympathies" does it take before it becomes legitimate for people to turn against an oppressive government?

Oh, that's right: if it's a government backed by the Reagan White House, the answer is: it's never legitimate.

America remains proud of its revolutionary heritage and its brave struggle against the unnameable horrors of taxation without representation. But the right to resist repression is apparently an American prerogative that Uncle Sam guards very jealously.

I'd rather America hadn't at times chosen to support state terror against popular resistance and propped up those regimes with training, military advisers, and logistical and intelligence support funded by the taxpayer.

You're shooting your own argument in the foot when you breezily claim that "the right present only facts" after having asserted that "the left spew nothing but hate".

How so?

Because there are plenty of people on the left who present only facts, don't get angry, are calm, collected, logical, intelligent. Your claim that no one who holds left-wing opinions possesses those qualities, which are supposedly a monopoly of the right, is not a "fact". At best, it's a prejudice spoken in ignorance; at worst, it's a lie that betrays naked contempt for people who hold opinions different to yours.

There are plenty of people -- far too many -- on both left and right whose toxic tribal politics has persuaded them that their critics and opponents aren't simply wrong, aren't merely misinformed or misguided, but are bad people. Luckily, there are also people -- on both left and right -- who don't stoop to slosh about in the gutter quite so readily.

You're either going to unite the kingdom around the monarchy as a symbol of national and religious resistance in the face of foreign ("crusader") aggression, or you're going to make it disintegrate and create another black hole of instability in one of the most important oil producing regions in the world. Before Uncle Sam tries taking a country apart once again, he should first have some realistic plan of how to stick it back together afterwards. Don't kid yourself that a foreign policy so brainless it can be summed up with the word "BANG!" is a good thing.

Destroy Mecca with an airstrike, and you risk spreading chaos across the globe so dangerous that no American will be safe anywhere outside of America in your lifetime.

And people who want to see Saudi Arabia punished for its barbaric treatment of its subjects but can't think of a better way of doing it than indiscriminately incinerating Saudi Arabia's subjects with incendiaries and high explosives are so disturbingly stupid they shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a ballot paper, ever.

As much as I would puke to see the Saudi monarchy and its hired murderers and torturers predictably wriggle off the hook, we need to be aware that a lot of the regimes to which the West happily sells lethal hardware have records on human rights that are just as bloodstained as Saudi Arabia's -- it's just that they're not usually publicized.

It's good that the Khashoggi case has shone a rare spotlight on the unsavoury activities of just one of our disgusting customers; but if we're going to suspend normal business (let's face it, we're not), then we need some steel in our moral backbone and stop shaking hands on arms deals with others too.
