Reasonable fear TC. This is why it's imperative that if you have kids, you focus on developing their identity and personalities as people you want to be around. Don't let their skin color overwhelmingly define who they are. I say this as someone who's darker skinned than most people around me (especially among my family). What I take pride in is how sociable I can be, to the point where I can change an instance where guys would be rushing at me with fear that I was breaking into their car to us altogether cracking jokes in a split moment.

I've been fortunate enough to live in a predominantly black community and I don't live in the states, but the impression I get from the black stateside community is that the sentiment is "Accept us for who we are, but don't bother us" and that's an unfair wish. You can't have both exclusivity and selective inclusivity at the same time. Not when people have a limited pool of where they can devote their empathy to.

I'm rambling a bit more than I should, but this is something I do dwell on, in the rare occasion that I have kids on my own (I do joke to myself that Imma die alone), how would I move forward if they were as dark skinned as me. No one really talks about it or admits to it, but the darker you are, the harder you need to work. In every culture, not just limited to black culture, lighter complexion is more highly prized.

It does matter. How else are you supposed to make changes? By telling kids "it's wrong to bully" or "You shouldn't say such things!"? So you have to understand their thoughts, only then can you influence them to change their behavior and atmosphere so you don't have to worry about it again.

I'm going to read through the topic, but as a Caribbean native, as someone who grew up around people who look like myself, I can somewhat sympathize with the girls. They want to be in a community with people who look like them and they feel like the odd ones out in their community. Growing up where I did and not having grown up in the 60's, I have had the privilege to develop my own identity and not develop that animosity towards white folks. Hell, native white people down here don't even consider themselves white (we call 'em frenchies cause they immigrated from St. Barths) and look down on white folks.

So wherever I go, because I've developed a distinct enough personality and know how to get along with just about anyone, people see "me" before they see my skin color, if that makes sense. Those girls probably have stunted identities so that they see their color as a huge defining part of who they are which clashes with the people they speak to everyday and in turn makes them want to seek their safe space.

That being said, the founder is a hack for deciding to go Costa Rica of all islands. If you're organizing a black women's retreat, why not go to an island that is predominantly black for your safe space? WTF, we're not good enough for you? If you're gonna be racist and call for segregation, at least be consistent about it and support your own... not that we really want you anyways.

We all have the ability to change ourselves and take control of our lives to get what we want. If you want to be a not *****y person, think about what kind of person you want to be, and figure what kind of person you currently are, and figure out the steps to evolve to be the person you want to be. For instance, if you are a miserable cloud of hot air, and you want to be that ray of sunshine that makes people smile, think about what that person would do in a situation you find yourself in. If you walk into a restaurant, you're probably silent. A ray of sunshine would say "Good Morning/Afternoon" when they enter an establishment. Knowing this, the next time you're in that situation, emulate the action of the ray of sunshine.

Yeah I just had to use it. But let me elaborate to continue the dialogue. Let me tell you about a mentor of mine that I've respected the most. He's an optical physicist heading up a research lab that caters to an entire research center + a medical school. What made working at that lab so much fun was all the people who came to him for problems. He had problems where he had to design lasers, optical tweezers, even to pull out a stuck screw every other week, all to support other research labs. Ultimately, he joined with a few other scientists to start a company where they were designing a laser scalpel system to assist surgeons.

He's inventing new tech, so he's an inventor, and because his team wants to monetize their work in some way, they have to be businessmen. But this idea can only come to fruition and be profitable if people see it as a solution to their problem; in this case needing more accurate tools to assist in surgery. This is what I mean by finding a solution to a real world problem. Basically all innovation are founded on this principle.

Valid points all, it is something that greatly erodes social interaction skill for people who are probably already pretty dang inept at it. But it's still not on the streamer. The audience is there of their own volition, paying money for whatever they get. If they're putting some extra significance on these mentions or acknowledgement... that's really kinda their fault. If they keep paying money and don't get what they're after then they should probably take a step back and look at what they're doing and stop.

This is exactly the scenario of being taken advantage of, where your'e in a position where physically you're able to set the boundary to let yourself be exposed but you don't and so others take, take, and take some more from you.

I don't know who that is, but I'll assume you think what I'm saying only applies to female streamers. Everything I said also applies to male streamers, save for the last bit. Female streamers also have the advantage of giving their viewers female attention to put off an aura as if this is "their girl", hence how distraught that guy was upon the revelation. Her obliviousness to her effect on her viewers is not an excuse for taking advantage of them.

And for the record, I think streaming is the most dangerous thing to appear in gaming in recent years, right after paid gacha/loot box mechanics. It's a limited sense of social interaction and removes the critical thinking part that comes with gaming because you're not doing the thinking, the streamer is. For kids this is especially dangerous because this doesn't give them the social experience they need to thrive and it puts them into a vulnerable position for streamers to take advantage of them, i.e. "hey give me some money and I'll acknowledge you".

One of my best buddies I met in college was previously kicked out of the school because his girlfriend falsely accused rape on him. One of my best friends is currently incarcerated because someone, once again, falsely accused him of rape. This one is a little more terrifying and a bit different from the topic because it was basically someone coming out of the closet and trying to save face. His trial hasn't come but his lawyers all say it's gonna be an easy case cause the "victim" can't get his story straight a opposed to my friend whose story remains consistent across several months.

It can happen and people are well justified to take any extreme measure to protect their livelihoods with how easily offended people can be and how others have had their lives ruined by it.
