I'm still not sure why every so often, Wikipedia pages are locked down. Also, how long do they stay locked down for? I can understand for contentious things, or if people are likely to vandalise a page, but sometimes seemingly random pages are locked down. Isn't that against the whole point of Wikipedia?

Some short documentaries:

The Making of Merkel with Andrew Marr

Make Me A German

Wilhelm II of Germany

Some much longer documentaries:

Wikipedia gets unfairly vilified tbh. I do agree that you cant really use that as a source though. Good thing their articles are reasonably cited and you can read those sources instead.

In theory, any non-fiction work, such as non-fiction books or TV documentaries can have inaccuracies. It can be due to bad research, or people lying on certain subjects, or a bias on the part of the person making the work. It's just, allegedly, a worse problem on Wikipedia. But I'm not sure if that's true.

NinjaBreakfast, only you would think every writer wants to be a bestseller.

That would be...disgusting. I want to, eventually, be a mid-level writer. You know, like most, if not all of the great writers of the last 300 years?

And also, despite what you said, I've learnt from many sources. Wikipedia, documentaries, films, non-fiction books, fiction books. What is your problem? Also, in the future, people would generally probably consider Wikipedia to be a legitimate way to either party, or fully, research an important project. Who knows, perhaps we'll destroy all the non-fiction books, and shut down all the research websites because we don't need them anymore.

Wow, according to Wikipedia, LGBT sexual activity was legal from 1968 onwards. What surprises me even more, it took until 1969 in West Germany for it to be legal.

I wouldn't be surprised if, unofficially, LGBT people were discriminated against in East Germany, although perhaps not too badly.

Hey, Tar, have you come into this topic to troll me, with sentiments such as women not getting discriminated against in the modern German workforce, or Germans no longer celebrating Octoberfest?

Something I've wondered for a while, although I don't know if anyone in this topic can answer. How were LGBT people treated in East Germany? I would assume they were quite severely punished, probably a few years in either prison, or a Stazi holding cell, but I'm not sure one way or the other.

Little Nightmares, Rime, Shovel Knight, or whatever. It sometimes feels that way. Short, simple games, often with moderately bad problems, get like 7.5s or 8.0s. Is this to encourage smaller developers, or something? Or do reviewers just feel sorry for them?

For years, I've thought of modern Germany as like in the video below. Graffiti all over walls, really poor council estates, hulks of cars just left lying around...people occasionally killing each other. I'm not entirely convinced this isn't an accurate impression.

Ryetoast, I don't think you understand what "fan fiction" means. I suggest you find out.

I might have talked mostly about the Nazi regime in this topic, but as I said, I would to write about various periods. The Nazi regime is one of the most interesting, though.

I must admit, when I was first thinking about this short story collection, I had little to no idea about the modern part of it. I have quite a few ideas now*, but really had almost no clue at the time. Wikipedia and documentaries got me going for knowledge of both specific things, and the general zeitgeist (so to speak) of the modern German nation.

* Millennials living in 2010s Germany; women struggling to get taken seriously in the workplace; free elections; the internet; poverty in certain parts of the country; immigration; the alt-right making gains in culture; the recent Recession.

I actually agree with the Trump comparison. They're both people who say random things that don't make much sense, and they clearly alienate and upset people. I suppose it's possible that Trump will also start a new World War (although with Russia, I wouldn't entirely blame him).

I find it a very interesting country. It started with the Nazi regime, then spread to other things like modern Germany and East and West Germany.

I'm thinking about writing a book set in Germany, at various points in time. I've been contemplating this for almost 6 months now. Originally, it was going to be a novel set in the Nazi regime, then it was going to be a different kind of novel in the same period, but eventually I thought it would be good to write a short story collection that covers the last 150 years or so of Germany history. There's so much potential. It would probably be a big book, as well, maybe 450 - 500 pages.

What do people think of this? Do I still not know enough? Is it just a bad idea to begin with because nobody wants to read a short story collection that long?

Who do you think where the most important people in the Nazi regime, other than Hitler himself?

I'd say Speer, Goebbels, Goring, Himmler, Rommel, and maybe Heydrich. Obviously there were plenty of other major Nazis, but I'd say those were the key figures. Hess was important early on, but that was all (and was disavowed by Hitler), and various other people weren't as important as some of the names I've given.

Yeah I took his name.

It is pretty low brow, but also a fucking awesome book. Give it a try.

Do you remember when the serious reading communities wouldn't shut the fuck up about House of Leaves? Basically, for all of the 2000s, they just talked and talked about it. Crazy. I admit, though, it's a very good book, and NOBODY could say that it's just another cookie cutter release.

MZD is one of those writers that self-destructed, which is both sad and hilarious. He wrote that fucking dreadful Only Revolutions, one of the worst books I have EVER read cover to cover...and then there was his super-epic The Familiar, which sounds like garbage, and got cancelled after 5 of the 28 volumes were releases. I wonder what his next career move will be. A book about the president's children getting kidnapped, written in a fictional language of his own creation and without a glossary at the end?

Shame. House of Leaves was one of those special works.

Alright, thanks! I didn't know about the fire weapon thing at all, though. o_O;; Just recently, when I was using a meteor wand in the Hebra Mountains, it occured to me that might work, but I didn't really try it. It's good, because the torch can go out under certain circumstances, and can take a few seconds to relight, or you might not be able to relight it at all, at the time.

Have you played many sandbox games? How do you feel they compare? I've had a chance to really play about 5 or 6, and this is definitely my favourite.

But why? Can't we advance in more than one way at once? I mean...we used to.

Because it takes more hardware to keep improving that. It takes more people working on it to get it done at a decent time....

The cost of these AAA games and the numbers they have to sell to turn a profit are nuts.

Yeah, it's sad about how "big" projects often are these days. I remember when RE6 came out (I think), and it had to sell X number of copies to even break even, and X was a pretty high number, quite a few million, I think.

TBQH, I don't just want sad little indie games that are basically 2-bit games, but I want somewhere inbetween. Games with excellent graphics, and quite a lot of content, but they don't have to be sandbox games, or games with tons of online modes that took a long time to development.
