Jim Crow laws were state and local laws enforcing racial segregation in the Southern United States.

Jim Crow laws mandated racial segregation in all public facilities.

As a body of law, Jim Crow institutionalized economic, educational, and social disadvantages for African Americans.

This shitty policy (that I'm not sure I even agree with) wasn't put in place to enforce racial segregation. It isn't a policy that disadvantages someone because they are black.

This is not the first time Kemp attempted to tinker with voter registrations in ways that disproportionately affected people of color. Kemp introduced an exact-match voter registration program in 2008, when Georgias election administration was under federal supervision due to the now-defunct Section 5 clause of the Voting Rights Act, that was applied to states and counties with racist election histories.

Before the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated it in 2013, Section 5 required states like Georgia to submit election changes like this to the U.S. Department of Justice for review and preclearance before implementation. Kemps 2008 program failed that review because, as the Justice Departments rejection letter read, the flawed system frequently subjects a disproportionate number of African-American, Asian, and/or Hispanic voters to additional and, more importantly, erroneous burdens on the right to register to vote.

Part crackpot social theory and part elementary school insult, the NPC meme originated from a deeply comical medley of bogus physics and stupid religion found on the messaging board 4Chan. Originally posted in 2016, it resurfaced last month. I have a theory that there are only a fixed quantity of souls on planet Earth that cycle continuously through reincarnation, a 4Chan poster wrote. However, since the human growth rate is so severe, the soulless extra walking flesh piles around us are NPCs [sic], or ultimate [redacted], who autonomously follow group think and social trends in order to appear convingly human. NPCs arent even worthy of a classic wake up, sheeple. They cant!

Heres where things get interesting. Around the time a lot of us were assigned to read The Catcher in the Rye in middle school, it was normal to have edgelord thoughts about phonies or being one of the few who is capital-A awake. The NPC meme takes things a step further into a political zone where mass outcry against, say, serial harassers, racial injustice, or Trumpian ideas is dismissed as not just inherently uncritical but prima facie evidence of a lack of human consciousness.
