Brawls hype was due to Snake unleashing 3rd parties into the mix and Japan time giving us daily info, but it was only big among the video game community.

Literally no games had a large pre release outside of the video game community.

Those games have mainstream appeal, but not mainstream hype. People don't follow the development news. They get excited when the game is just around the corner, not earlier.

Spinoff games, movies, novels, etc are meant for side stories that, while they may enhance the plot and understanding of the main series, should not be essential to said overall plot. Birth By Sleep and DDD aren't side stories though. BBS is KH0. The're just as important as 1 and 2.
