I can't see Cloud actually being SFF'd because of Smash. If anything, it should be the other way around. He's top-tier in Smash 4 and I don't see myself buying a new game Cloud is in just to somehow find out Link is cooler there.

The point would be that part of Cloud's natural strength comes from Smash, and that strength evaporates when he's against a character Nintendo fans love more.

This game's final boss is fantastic so I think it will make a good lasting impression.

BotW is weird because it's basically a return to NES Zeldas.

Most people I see praising it a lot are Zelda 1 fans. I've seen many saying they disliked the change made by LttP (more focus on puzzles and gimmicks and less on exploration) and enjoy the return to form.

So the challenge for BotW in this site is overcome the fact people here are in love with OoT. We don't mind the puzzles and gimmicks. And many modern Zelda fans think Zelda 1 is too hard or too non-linear.

It seems it does that job pretty well, but maybe not enough to beat OoT itself.

Yeah I think Nasus belongs to the first category.

We won't know until MM faces Crono.

Right now It looks like Link/Pikachu had minimal SFF. Because I don't believe Pikachu gets more than 45% on Cloud.

But if MM beats Crono then theres clearly huge SFF between Link/PIkachu

Then you've got the casual early people who still anti-vote FFVII

Cloud probably increases less than usual because of the super early vote, but I think Cloud can probably keep this below 55%

I tried to do a similar comparison yesterday to predict Mario vs Zelda, using The Boss and Ocelot (I also assumed they stayed internally consistent).

But it didn't work. The result MMX put on Ocelot makes Mario seem like a Link-beater. Like, Mario got 70%+ on Zelda. It's more likely Ocelot just dropped like crazy and doesn't beat The Boss easily anymore.

Hard to find stats that are still consistent from previous contests. At this point we might have better success just analysing the HIERARCHY and figuring out if Nintendo fans prefer Mario or Zelda.

Never mind Smash releases.

Well actually I guess we do have a kind of indirect way of measuring Samus/Zelda.

You could run the xstats to see what it says Tifa does to Aerith if Zelda = Samus. Then judge it from there as to whether it sounds plausible

Tifa gets 54% on Aeris if Samus = Zelda.

She would get 60% in 2010 and 62% in 2013, so this does suggest Samus is a step above Zelda.

I mean, yeah it's possible, but Snake has reasons to decline since 2013 that Samus really does not.

Throw away all pre-2018 stats you have on Zelda. This is a new reality where she gets 63% on Squall.

Tifa beating Seph feels like two sides of the same coin. We grew up, so edgy badasses like Seph are not that appealing anymore. On the other hand, characters who just have good story or personality like I guess Tifa does (never played the game) appeal more, because we are looking for different things now.

(That, and TJF/Waifu factor too, ofc)

"Maybe 2B"? She might be the strongest 21th century character in the bracket. And Bayonetta did super well too. Never mind Samus who could be the #2 character in the site.

Zelda doesn't have a lead role per se, but people like her because she got a lot of character development... which is also a modern trend.

I don't want to make this a debate about feminism btw... just describing what seems to be a trend. You give a girl more dialogue and things to do and suddenly she is more popular. While before, characters like Peach and Zelda existed solely to be saved by the hero.

One thing that caught my attention is that I used to hear the term SexistFAQs describing some match results, and that just vanished. It's all about TJF and Waifufactor and stuff now.

Interesting fact is that until Mario vs Samus in this contest, people were not sure if rSFF existed at all!

Now we know it does.

It could partly be that the site's getting older too. Back when they were teenagers, girls were gross, but now that's not as much the case anymore.

I think it's a mix of us getting older and pop culture generally being more used to female characters in lead roles, imo.

I have the same story with Crono in my bracket. But Samus is even more hype.

Like that's probably the most hype match in history.

Imagine Samus coming off a bandwagon, after having destroyed Snake and Cloud, into a Mario who just got doubled by Link.
