Square-Enix's cringe-worth storytelling was saved by early generation's graphical limitations.

As soon as gaming's graphical leaps were coming closer to realism, you could see what S-E envisioned. Those awkward anime-ish over the top melodramatic storytelling.

I think its more due to the fact the core team left after ff10. Series has never recovered from that

Its definitely grown on me. I would say it took about 5-10 hours before I really started to like it.

My main gripes at this point is the buy phase should have all the basic treasures available for everyone instead of randomized.

Then just a few issues with some of the cards. For example a card that makes a coin flip on whether any given creature dies or not is just dumb.
