Topic | How is MAGA racist again? |
adjl 08/27/19 1:46:38 PM #44 | SKARDAVNELNATE posted... Nor does everyone concerned with immigration think it's the sole reason for job loss. The reasons to be concerned about immigration are as follows: 1. Immigrants will drain the country's limited resources, leaving less available for native-born citizens 2. Immigrants will take jobs away from native-born citizens by working for lower wages The former has nothing to do with illegal immigrants, as they are ineligible for welfare and other such government programs. Ergo, the latter is the primary issue. If somebody doesn't think that immigration is a significant factor in the loss of their jobs (i.e. a sensible person who understands that those are jobs that simply aren't sustainable if they employ people at a living wage, meaning they'll be automated if outsourcing and other methods of cutting costs are prevented), then they don't have any reason to be opposed to immigration. SKARDAVNELNATE posted... Maybe they just want the laws obeyed and to deal with violators of the law. Laws have no inherent value. "It's the law!" is not a valid defense of anything on its own. Kyuubi4269 posted... Not racist, just pragmatic. A pragmatic appeal to racist (or at least xenophobic) sentiments. Ergo, racist. Bear in mind that this does not necessarily mean that he himself is racist, just that he has made an appeal to racism a major part of his platform. Kyuubi4269 posted... So he's racist because you think his supporters are a bunch of no-brain Hicks? Do you think that anyone who doesn't see MAGA for the empty, meaningless pathos it is isn't unintelligent? Kyuubi4269 posted... Who wudda thunk the populist put out bait to let the people believe he's on side. It's par for course, this is how you get the people on side and rally them under a single banner. It's like feminists saying they're for equality (exclusively where women aren't better off) or LGBT being about acceptance (unless you're white, straight or don't support our offshoot causes). adjl 08/27/19 10:15:10 AM #5 | Kyuubi4269 posted... US foreign terrorism is seated quite firmly in Islam so it's fair to be suspicious of areas in open support of said terrorists. Except the travel ban in question didn't target countries with known ties to US foreign terrorism (which, in a shocking coincidence, are also countries where Trump has business interests), it targeted countries that were generating crisis levels of refugees. Saudi Arabia has been conclusively linked to funding 9/11. Yemen has not. Trump's travel ban was about looking like he was doing something to protect the US by keeping a bunch of brown people out (since much of his base doesn't understand the differences between the various middle eastern countries and cultures), without actually going so far as to step on the toes of the real culprits because they contribute too much money to the US. Lokarin posted... Make America Great Again: Since America was its greatest when taking in mass immigrants (such as the Irish migration, and the Jewish migration), that implies that taking in immigrants is what makes America great See, you know that, and I know that, but most of the rednecks who are convinced that illegal mexican immigrants are the reason they no longer have a job lack that understanding, and it's those people that are mostly being appealed to with "make America great again." Trump isn't referencing any specific period in America's history with the slogan, he's making a vague appeal to the people who feel that America used to be better and would like to return to those times, letting them come up with their own reasons why it's deteriorated and believe that he would be fixing them. --- This is my signature. adjl 08/25/19 8:44:57 PM #27 | faramir77 posted... 0F means nothing important to daily life. It's roughly the point at which throwing salt down on ice won't do anything, which can be kind of handy. That's approximate and uncommon enough that just remembering -20C is good enough, though. Topic | Why do people always fight about glitched speedruns? |
adjl 08/25/19 10:22:23 AM #9 | GrimCyclone posted... No official contest run will ever allow such inventive glitching unless it is explicitly allowed. There really aren't official contest speed runs, and if there were going to be, odds are any major speed run-applicable glitches would be patched out in preparation for it. That's a fairly meaningless point to try making in more broadly discussing glitches in speed runs. hypnox posted... Personally, I think a speed run of a game is to play it as the creators intended. There's a very easy argument to make that the vast majority of speed runs aren't playing as the creators intended, glitches or otherwise. Even a non-glitch run entails skipping absolutely everything that can be skipped, which is hardly consistent with the vision of the people that put it in there to be enjoyed. Now, there's also an argument to be made that the creators' intent is for players to have fun with the game, which means skipping everything is still consistent with that intent, but then that position means using glitches to skip even more stuff is also consistent and we're back to square one. Really, the distinction exists because glitch hunting and execution is often a very different sort of mindset and play style from playing within the normal restraints of the game. Some people enjoy that different play style, and some don't, so you get different competition classes so there's something for both camps of players. That's all there really is to it. No need to start invoking any sort of ideals of purism or creators' intents or anything that would turn this into anything more than two people who like playing games two different ways. --- This is my signature. I haven't tried them out yet, since I pretty rarely use a straw for anything, but they seem pretty nifty. zebatov posted... Straws are the only things that are plastic. On one hand, yeah, straws are a tiny drop in the ocean that is the world's plastic problem, and the people that act like they're accomplishing anything meaningful by latching on to that while not doing anything else are kidding themselves. On the other hand, straws are nonetheless part of the plastic problem, and really fairly easy to stop using (for the fully-abled), so there's no reason not to get on board with the effort to cut down on their use. It's just important to also keep generating demand for other plastic reduction strategies on top of that, rather than resting on one's laurels after buying a reusable straw. --- This is my signature. adjl 08/20/19 10:04:28 AM #49 | Zeus posted... Do you really think that they should be impacted equally? You're the one who equivocated them. Zeus posted... More importantly, the employer has a greater stake in his business than the employee. If a company fails, all that happens to the employees is that they lose their job. A company failing has far more dire prospects for the employer. Given the imbalance, the employer needs to be able to protect his business. Nobody's saying a company shouldn't be able to fire somebody who's driving the company into the ground (like anything, there are examples of unions pushing too far and doing just that, but you can't use extreme examples to invalidate an entire concept). The far more common situation is that employers overwork their employees to unhealthy degrees and/or treat them poorly because the threat of being unemployed (and potentially unemployable, depending on the industry and how easily the employer can badmouth them to other employers in the area) keeps them from objecting. Taking away that threat is the only way to improve those conditions, and that's what unionizing does. Zeus posted... And an employee's personal circumstance isn't the business's concern. Which is why unions and regulations are needed to force businesses to consider such things. Otherwise you just get a workforce full of people being treated like garbage, which is bad for everyone except for the handful of people at the top living off of the money they didn't have to give their employees. --- This is my signature. Topic | How are lootboxes any different from those overpriced TCG booster packs of yore? |
adjl 08/20/19 9:52:06 AM #21 | -Cards have enough resale value that you can usually recover most - if not all - of your investment if you buy a significant number of packs and sell the ones you don't want -Cards are paid for using real money, not an intermediate currency designed to obscure how much is being paid -In the case of non-cosmetic stuff, game companies have much more ability to manipulate demand for loot boxes (e.g. through increasing grindiness or engineering social pressure, the latter of which also applies to cosmetics) -Cards make up the entire game in the case of TCG's, as opposed to being a mechanic that has been tacked on to a different game (which, again, makes it easier to manipulate demand) Despite these differences, though, this whole loot box thing has indeed been cause to take a look at TCG's and blind box figures and anything else that uses "surprise mechanics" to make a product more appealing. Looking closer, a good many of them do seem to be predatory and manipulative in exactly the same way as loot boxes are, which could justify also placing regulations on them like those that are placed on gambling. The long-term consequence of pushing to have loot boxes regulated will likely to be to also regulate some of those, due to the logical similarities, and I'm actually okay with that. Quite simply, if a product is going to profit off of the same psychological manipulations that make gambling profitable, it should be subject to the same regulations that limit gambling's ability to harm people. --- This is my signature. The Switch, on the other hand, has had no such difficulties getting off the ground. Your reward for being an early adopter is the 2.5 years of fun you've had with your Switch so far; this exchange program (if it were true) would be an effort to build trust with customers by demonstrating that they wouldn't have to worry about missing out on an upgrade in the immediate future if they were to buy a non-upgraded one now. Lots of people start because theres a negative stigma around cigarettes but vaping is more accepted especially by younger people. Vapes are just replacing cigs but people are still getting addicted to nicotine Yep. The number of kids vaping now is pretty ridiculous. It doesn't help that vapes are actually allowed to be advertised, which the tobacco companies were quick to jump on. --- This is my signature.
