Found an amazing flight that leaves DC on January 8, so it's a guarantee at this point. I think you guys who are on the fence should take the plunge! It could wind up being a good sized B8 meetup.

The gist of it: my sister lives about six miles away from the venue and I'm already spending Christmas there this year. I'm like 90% sure I'll be able to stay into the first week of January and attend this thing, especially if I can see some Board 8 friends there. Lemme know!

Wouldn't have really had an answer until last year when a friend started bringing bottles of her local Nicaraguan rums to our get togethers. I've also tried Ron Zacapa from my gf's Guatemala, which felt like discovering an unknown gem. Rum's the winner for me.

Also, while this isn't my favorite, anyone interested in trying exotic liquors should consider Arak, a drink popular in the Middle East but virtually unheard of in the U.S. You mix it with ice water to dilute (most brands are 50% ABV); this also changes its color from clear to pale white, which serves as a nice parlor trick for people unfamiliar with the drink. Disclaimer: imo it tastes just like black licorice which is kinda gross but all the 50+ year old men in my family love it.

Yeah that's a pretty awesome movie to watch in high school. Not only is she naked, she's absolutely beautiful and dancing around, fucking owning the scene.

I'm a bit of a Disneyland fanatic - I grew up in SoCal with an aunt who worked for Disney corporate, so I got to go for free a few times. In my pre-teens and early teens, my family moved really close to the park (like nine miles down the main boulevard), so I got annual passes for a couple years and actually got tired of Disneyland. I didn't go from like... age 14 to 28. I rediscovered it on a date about 5 years ago, and I fucking loved it.

It's probably not nearly as fun for someone who doesn't give a shit about Disney, but as someone who holds nostalgia for the movies and rides, it's a worthwhile experience even without kids (though I'm not sure if that's still the case since the cost has gotten exorbitant). I've been going once a year with my gf since 2015 and doubt we'll stop.

Yeah, but the thing about pizza is that it's versatile enough that you SHOULD find a combo for almost everyone... I prefer pizza that's lighter on cheese myself; I'd rather taste the tomato sauce. I wouldn't look twice at people who ordered their pizza without cheese because the dough is supposed to be the main attraction anyway.

For anyone wondering, here's the restaurant:

Even as someone whose experience is relegated to $27 AYCE sushi joints, I can tell this restaurant is using amazing ingredients. Abalone, high-quality urchin, fatty tuna, and real wasabi are incredibly expensive. There are some pompous bits that I wouldn't have associated with a sushi place, like the gold flakes, but that probably helped him get to three Michelin stars so who knows. I think the dabbing of like... a quarter drop of lime on the fish is the most pretentious part of the vid though; only a 70-year-old Japanese guy can do something like that without being called out on it.

The MCU movies are pretty fresh in my mind since I've spent the last ~4 months watching them for the first time, and I was surprised about The Hulk. It's been painted as the black sheep and arguably the worst of the MCU, but I enjoyed it. It has a distinctly darker and less humorous tone than the other Marvel movies, and the more of them I watched, the more I appreciated The Hulk at least as something different. Hell, I liked it more than Iron Man.

It wasn't until a year or so after I started the accounting program that I put the pieces together and realized who she was - and even that I (shit you not) had a clip of her on my hard drive for years. I never brought it up in person, but after we graduated, I sent her a random Facebook message telling her I was a fan of her work. I'd say the two most conventional Lynch films - Elephant Man and The Straight Story - are also very good and may be his most emotionally resonant because they're so much easier to follow.

I haven't seen Inland Empire for somewhat the same reason; I fucking love Lynch but I'm not sure I can make it through three hours of his madness. Also, that shot of Laura Dern's face might legit be too terrifying.

The Godfather - I agree that it's a deliberately "patient" movie. I honestly wasn't too engrossed my first time through - not because it was an abstract or strange film to follow, but because there was such an abundance of characters and relationships. It's a Shakespearean play in a contemporary setting. One can also argue it's the "best acted" movie ever. Everyone from Brando on down gives an incredible performance.

Kane - My grandma, who is now 85 and battling dementia, was a great admirer of everything Hollywood from the 1940s-50s. Even now in her deteriorated state, she can casually rattle off dozens of stars. I've spent quite a few evenings with her watching the oldies, so it surprised me that she had never seen Citizen Kane. We watched it about a decade ago, and I shit you not, she called the plot twist like an hour into the movie. I played dumb as best I could, but I couldn't fucking believe it.

Clockwork Orange - This one is too much for me. I know there's a deeper meaning to the violence, but the sheer way it almost revels in rape and sexual assault makes it very difficult for me to appreciate, let alone enjoy.

Mulholland Drive - I was also hoping this would be #1. I watched it very recently (maybe a year ago) and had no idea what was happening with the plot, but that didn't stop the movie from blowing my mind. I remember watching it with my gf and muttering near the ending "I had no idea this was gonna be so good", to which she immediately agreed. I rewatch and couple YouTube vids later, I feel I have some understanding of what Lynch was trying to convey, but nothing will top that first viewing where I understood nothing and felt everything.

2001 is my all-time favorite, and I couldn't agree more with you about it STILL being arguably the best looking movie ever made. I watched it a bit later - my mid 20s I think - and I couldn't believe it was a fucking decade older than Star Wars. And like with Star Wars, I expected an exclusively in-space movie, so imagine my shock when the first 20 minutes depict "The Dawn of Man" with warring monkey tribes. No movie has ever subverted my expectations more, or made me blink less. In terms of scope, technical mastery, and artistic vision, it towers over any other film I've ever seen. Its reputation has only grown, and at this point, if people wanna bring up the pompous "consensus GOAT film" argument, I think it narrows down to this, Citizen Kane, and maybe The Godfather.

I took my brother to see it last summer during its 50th anniversary re-release, and man, it's also an AMAZING theater movie. The sound overpowered me in that IMAX theater.
