I think a user has to have been @'d at least once before though or it won't auto fill for you.

No, I mean it auto-fills, but then I can't delete the @. I used it to have the correct spelling when talking about another user without necessarily making them get a notification about being mentioned. Now the whole thing becomes a single thing and you can't just remove the @.
