Yes. At least the old ones. I saw a YouTube video of a guy who tried to play Duck Hunt on a non-CRT TV, but it didn't work, because CRT scanlines are drawn one after the other, but modern LCD and LED displays are instantaneous. He had to rig up some adapter for the screen and the gun, and make some software to delay the signal into real scanlines (not just a scanline-looking filter).

It's plausible to shoplift there, I guess, but you'd need to buy a large number of things, and get lucky with that random item.
