I remember being interested in it, but never actually taking the plunge to purchase it because there was always soemthing else that I prioritized my Wii Points for. I'd completely forgotten about it until this topic, which has rekindled my interest and made me resent the fact that the Wii Shop has shut down and rendered it inaccessible.

Subclass get, now I get a whole 10 skill points in Hunter to help out, which is enough to get like a 2% damage buff out of Fury Stance. Nifty. Now I just need to stop hitting B to dodge because this isn't Dark Souls >.>

agesboy posted...
This probably isn't as true as you'd think. They're clunkier, but every class in pso2 is capable of outputting high damage because everyone is a different flavor of DPS class. Techer's mobbing abilities become absurd as soon as you get access to zondeel and wand explosion, which shouldn't take very long. Whenever simple compounds get added, Re Zandia will amplify this with basically ranged persistent zondeel that does damage.

They're slightly weaker than forces at boss killing via techs solo and with standard builds they don't have access to the full elemental spectrum, but they're far tankier and imo having access to melee dash over the standard float dodge is a gigantic benefit. They're the most suited for zanverse duty, too, cuz longer range.

The issue is that in the current state of the game, all techs are weak because we don't have tech customization available yet. It's nice to customize PAs, but it's downright vital to customize techs. Some techs simply aren't viable without customization (because the type-0 customization will change their properties entirely sometimes). Also, as a short term newb problem, techs also suck when they are very low level as they are now for everyone.

This is coming from someone who's been maining techer for about two years now and plans to main force in NA >_>

I did get the impression in the practice mission that Techters are rather good at mobbing. Even my clumsy attempts to follow the directions seemed to do a very, very nice job of killing everything in sight, even by practice mission standards. And the customization issue makes sense.

wolfy42 posted...
One thing I don't understand is the ranger vs hunter mechanic. The ranger seems to do more damage (from what I saw) AND can do it at range (so you don't need to get to the enemy), while also being able to dodge enemy attacks WAY easier.

I certainly ddidn't see anything that made the hunter able to take way more damage or dish it out that made being in melee make sense so far.

The Hunter's ability to guard and counterattack does give it a greater ability to hug the enemy and generally play more aggressively. Dunno how that plays out in the long run, but my impression so far is that that will help with damage output.

I'm kind of blown away by how many levels and how much money I'm getting just from doing tutorial-type missions. I got Hunter up past level 10 before I had enough money to buy a set of TMG's (I realized after this that there are tutorial missions for each weapon type that give you a free starting one) to start working on Gunner. I'm level 18 Gunner now, almost 19, and things seem to be going pretty smoothly so far.

wolfy42 posted...
so kinda wish I had gone with the beast race for my ranger since it says it's more offensive.

Apparently the racial/sexual stat differences are pretty minimal, working out to less than a 5% difference at endgame stats. That's worth pursuing for min/maxing purposes, but it's not likely to be affecting your early game experience too much, nor is it overly meaningful for more casual play. Also, Dewmans get a bonus to melee attack, not range. It is actually Casts that get an R-ATK bonus, so you've have actually min/maxed that already.

wolfy42 posted...
But man the tech starts of WEEEEEEEEEAK lol.

I made a newman tech to try out da spells (since my ranger is a cast), and it takes like 8 fireballs to kill 1 monkey, or I can run up and hit it with my very weak cane.

Techters are meant to be more support-oriented, so they are going to be a bit on the weaker side. Forces are the offensive casters. Were you charging your spells? That seemed to make a big difference in the tutorial mission, though admittedly that's the extent of my experience with casters so far.

As much as DS2 gets a lot of hate, it's really not a bad game at all. It's not necessarily as good as the other two, and the disjointedness of the areas is disappointing for people that really valued DS1's interconnectedness, but it delivers the same excellent combat and build variety that the series is known for and is still a thoroughly enjoyable game. Just make sure you understand the Adaptability stat before going in (broadly, it increases the number of iframes on your rolls, and you will need some investment to bring those up to DS1 levels, so playing without ADP investment takes a lot of getting used to), and you should still have a good time.

I ended up starting a character on Ship 3, since that's the one it randomly gave me. Completed the intro mission as a hunter, did a couple of the general practice ones, and now I'm going to work my way through the class training quests to settle on a class (I'm thinking Gunner, but that may change). If other people want a different ship, I'm not invested enough in this character to object to starting over.

Interesting. Not altogether surprising, but definitely at odds with the usual approach people take to frugality (that is, cheap out on food/housing once you hit a minimum standard, then spend disposable income on hobbies). Holiday spending surprises me, since I would have thought that was too short-term a benefit to change all that much, but I guess the ability to look forward to a holiday as being a nice, fun time helps make it more satisfying once that time finally arrives.

My download completed successfully overnight and the game seems to be able to start, though it does that annoying thing that a lot of Japanese games do where you have to set your video options before opening the game and I started in a smaller window, but that's easily solved by restarting the game. What ship are we aiming for?

ClarkDuke posted...
this keeps getting better, what's changed in the character mechanics?

Far as I'm able to tell, the combat system is vastly more varied and engaged, with every class having a variety of attacks to string together in fast-paced combos, active dodging/blocking, and multiple resources to manage. Classes are no longer a fixed trait of your character choice, and are instead leveled up and have their skill trees (there are skill trees now) completed individually. You can change your class at any time on a given character (though you only get one Mag and can't readily reset your skill trees, so it's recommended to make a new character if you want to focus on significantly different classes) and can have one subclass.

The overarching structure of the game is still the same (run quests, get loot, use loot to run quests better), but it seems like the combat and character development systems have been improved dramatically, which I'm really excited about because those were hands down the weakest parts of the original PSO.

It still kind of baffles me that these things are so rarely proofread. I can't imagine it costs that much to have somebody that does speak English edit a <200 word email, and I would think the scam's success rate would be notably higher if the email looked more legitimate, such that it'd easily pay for the difference. Granted, I suppose whoever's running the scam probably wouldn't be able to verify the quality of the translation and could therefore end up spending the money for nothing, and these operations usually benefit from involving as few people as possible, but it still seems weird to me.

A million cases of something with a 0.1% mortality rate will kill the same number of people as a thousand cases of something with a 100% mortality rate, and COVID's communicability means it's very capable of racking up a huge body count with the former strategy.

I'm not sure why people like you fixate so much on the "it's not technically free!" angle when it does so little to discredit the key point of the matter, which is that health care is infinitely more accessible than many other health care systems (namely the US').

streamofthesky posted...
It was definitely worse back when XC1 first came out though, which makes me suspect it's due to people who worked there back then and have since left...

Not necessarily. I think a lot of that was the general attitude of not wanting to localize big JRPG's due to them not being the most popular games anymore and the large amount of work involved in translating dialogue-heavy games (Xenoblade has over 10 hours of voice acted cutscenes, to say nothing of the written dialogue). The game did very well, though, so it's understandable that now they're more willing to support it because there's less risk involved in doing so.

There's probably also more than a little lingering opposition to Operation Rainfall, and an inclination to reject the game for no other reason than that that was their position for so long. After spending so much time saying "no" to Rainfall, it's going to be difficult to change to promoting and supporting the game, particularly where it wasn't actually Rainfall that ultimately convinced them to bring it over (Rainfall was rejected, then Gamestop picked it up a while later).

It's amazing that it took 10 years for XC1 to get a widely available release in North America.
First, people literally had to twist Nintendo of America's arm and make them release it here, only for it to be Gamestop-only and quickly run into the "mysterious problems" you mentioned.
Then it's on the 3DS. Great! Tons of people have that! ....New 3DS only, one of the only games to EVER require that? Well, crap....
Oh hey, it's on the Wii U eshop! ....Aaaaaand Wii U's dead. Eeek.

Better late than never, I guess.

10 years and Shulk being in two Smash games, no less, so it's not like they've been pretending the game doesn't exist. I'm still baffled that it took Gamestop funding the NA release (which is why it was exclusive) to have it brought over here, though. The EU release had already done all of the necessary localization, so it's not like NoA had much to lose, but we still never would have seen it had Gamestop not stepped in to pay for it.

streamofthesky posted...
The gameplay was probably the one thing that tied it together w/ XC1, though? The combat is far more similar between XC1 and XCX than XC1 and XC2. It's got the exact same arts structure and mechanics, but tweaked from there.
I agree that overall XC1 and 2 are closer together, but not for gameplay....

That is true. Combat-wise, 1 and X were more similar (though Overdrive was quite different from Chain Attacks, and Overdrive really defined X's combat). X was more of a mission-based open world game, though, while both 1 and 2 were more linearly structured (albeit in a large enough world with enough side quests to feel somewhat open world-ish). That's what I was referring to with "gameplay structure," though you are correct that 2 changed up the combat a lot more.

The 3DS and Switch releases have gotten a lot more promotion than that did.

Xenoblade Chronicles X was on the Wii U, though. But that was a different game (from the same series)...

I'm not even sure I'd say that X was from the same series. It's similar enough to qualify as a spinoff, but the fundamental gameplay structure, art style, and stories are very different, particularly where the way its story ended very much set up further sequels to that story in particular. By contrast, Xenoblade 2 was much more similar to the first game, making it much easier to say that it's in the same series.

Even in the less ethical cases, that argument can be made. Even if the world stopped eating honey tomorrow, there would still likely be a need to raise bees to avoid catastrophic agricultural collapse (as distinct from dairy/egg farming, where the disappearance of those industries would actually benefit the environment).

Unfortunately, a second lockdown probably won't work, given that objection to that will be even stronger than the first time around. Needing it is likely to be inevitable, but I doubt compliance rates will be high enough to actually help with the rise in cases. It's going to be a mess.

Never played the first one. Is it le fun? What makes this the "definitive" edition

Graphical improvements (which isn't hard because the original makes many PS2 titles look high-res), some remastered tracks (in one of the best soundtracks in gaming history, full stop), and a new epilogue sidequest sort of deal. By the sounds of things, if you're interested in playing the game, this'll be the version to play.

As for whether or not it's fun, I personally love it. Combat vaguely resembles a single-player MMO, juggling ability cooldowns while autoattacking and managing aggro levels to keep the enemy focused on a tankier party member (who will likely need some healing). The world is huge and gorgeous (even in the terrible graphics of the original version, thanks to good art design), making it a genuine pleasure to explore. Sidequests are largely your typical MMO-style fetch/kill quests, which are pretty forgettable, but I find they make for a nice excuse to do some exploring. Story's solid, characters are great, music is utterly phenomenal... I'd recommend it. It is a slow start, though, thanks to the sheer scale of the game (expect ~100-120 hours for a first playthrough if you take your time and do some sidequests/exploring), so don't be surprised if it takes a few hours to engage you.

There was a time in my life where I actually trusted the gaming opinions of people on here and on other forums.

Trusting "this game is good" doesn't mean you should interpret that statement as "this game belongs to a genre nobody has told me it belongs to." You should still be doing your own research as to what kind of game you're actually buying before you buy it.

I literally played the first battle.

So you didn't finish the opening cinematics.

Went in expecting Xenosaga, and never played any more.

That sounds like you should research your game purchases better.

I absolutely loathe "Action JRPGs".

I tend to reserve sentiments like "absolutely loathe" for things like genocide, slavery, and hanging toilet paper under the roll. Perhaps you should lighten up a bit.

Not day 1, but I'll probably pick it up at some point. It's one of my favourite games ever, and while I could just replay the Wii version instead, I'm quite happy to throw more money at the franchise.

Judgmenl posted...
No because I played 5 minutes of Xenoblade on the Wii 10 years ago and absolutely hated it

5 minutes isn't even enough to get through the opening cinematics and it wasn't available outside of Japan until 9 years ago.

Monolith killed Xenosaga for that fantasy action combat trash.

Not really. Xenosaga just never did all that well. It basically killed itself.

I'd rather just skip the effort and eat any honey.

That's what most people do that aren't overly concerned about animal welfare.

Id try to find the happy medium.

Like, I deserve money for it.

But I wouldnt make it accessible to only the super-rich.

Pretty much. Maybe like $5 in royalties per dose or something (on top of the regular costs like manufacturing). That's plenty of money, but won't make it inaccessible to the people that need it.

Just don't get mad when monopolies break up because it's inconvenient for you

If there's no benefit to me in those monopolies being broken up? I certainly will get mad over that. If I have to do extra work for no benefit, that's always going to be a problem. If Epic wants my business, they're going to have to start competing properly and actually offering a better service. Until then, I'm just going to keep mooching off of the free games for as long as they can continue pretending "throw money at it until everyone else gives up" is a viable competitive strategy.
