The main Waluigi reddit rally thread had ~656 points as of the poll closing. Should have had some additional people getting linked by that and voting Waluigi without upvoting it but then a few people linked by it also would have voted a non-Waluigi option so they might cancel each other out.

The poll is still running right now. It started at 1:00 AM because of the DST switch. Moving the poll start time back to 12:00 AM requires Allen (or another admin) to make a manual adjustment to the start time every single time we have a DST switch to keep the start time at 12:00 AM all year round. The next poll will start in less than 15 minutes from now.

I see my poll code has a 7:00PM start time. Were the polls not at midnight last contest?

What will be the start times for this contest? Does anyone know?

Yeah, they weren't at midnight last contest. In the last contest, the polls started at 8:00 PM EST before shifting to 7:00 PM EST after the November DST switch. All of the polls will start at 8:00 PM EST for this contest.

Due to the contest being delayed to March 19th (for the first day of matches), that means the first poll ID for this contest has been pushed back as well. Here's all of the relevant poll ID milestones you need to know for your match updater:

7908 - First Poll ID of contest, 4 matches per day
8004 - Start of 2 matches per day
8019 - Last Poll ID before the 6 day break begins
8020 - Contest resumes again with 2 matches per day
8032 - Start of 1 match per day
8034 - Final Poll ID of contest

Well, in terms of contest stats, wouldn't "best game" be the trusty result?

No, "favorite game" would be more reflective of game strength in a contest setting.

When you ask for "best game", it gets people to take off their nostalgia glasses and take a more objective look at all of the games in the poll before making their vote. With "favorite game", people don't put as much thought into their game and nostalgia is a bigger factor in their vote. Mario World and Mario 64 both did better in the "favorite game" polls than when it was "best game". Mario 3 and Galaxy 1 were 2 games that did better in the poll that was worded as "best game" compared to "favorite game".

I don't even trust that poll because it was worded as "best all-time", not "favorite". There's a difference between "best game" and "favorite game" on how voters interpret this. I have talked about the difference between "best game" and "favorite game" in the past, most notably when we had 2D and 3D Mario polls as those are the only 2 polls we've had using both the "best game" and "favorite game" wording in the poll question. So we got 2 sets of data points to compare the effect of the "best game" to "favorite game" in the poll question wording.

Leon already pointed out the CT character cast, but Sonic is probably the same way based on this one poll we got a long time ago:

Although that is a Sonic Adventure series character poll and not a general Sonic character poll.

So this phenomenon has been seen with Mario, CT, and Sonic characters. However, it hasn't been seen with the Street Fighter II character polls, where Ryu has won all of them fairly easily.

There could very well have been another Nintendo boost after the release of the Switch, since the 2015 version of this poll was pre-Switch and during the darkest years for Nintendo. But even then, Mario has gained less than 1% compared to the 2015 poll and is only ahead of Luigi due to him dropping 3% since 2015.

And a brand name like Mortal Kombat is a bit different. I just don't think the name Dragon Ball is enough on its own to win a match against a game people probably know. Batman and Spider-Man can be popular here because their games fit the GameFAQs brand. I don't know if Dragon Ball qualifies.

I would say genre of the game is far more important than the brand name. A Dragon Ball RPG would have a higher potential strength ceiling than a Dragon Ball fighter. And with very few exceptions like all-time classics such as Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat II, or games from the Smash series, fighting games are generally quite weak on this site.

Yeah, we're definitely way too old as a userbase for Fortnite. If Fortnite had come out in 2010 instead of 2017, I think it'd more popular on this site as our average age in 2010 was around 22. This was simply a case of poor timing on the release date for Fortnite - it came out well past the time this site used to be heavily into multiplayer games. As well as being too old at the time of its release.

The 6 day break during the last contest was a bad idea because it reduced vote totals for the rest of the contest. This was made even worse by the complete lack of any bonus matches during the break. Bonus matches during the break would have maintained interest with the contest, especially among the casual voters who got really thrown off by this break.

Correct, the previous contest required to pick a vote for all matches on the same day before the site allowed you to lock in your votes. Technically, you could bypass that by submitting a vote directly to the poll results page, a method used by the voters in TRE's first vote contest. So that's how vote totals for the individual matches on the same day can be slightly different from each other.

For this contest, having forced voting in all matches on the same day could hurt vote totals in the earlier rounds, but the impact should be lessened in the later rounds when we get down to 2 matches per day. But we don't know how the voting will be handled in that regard. This also makes tiebreaker predictions harder to call.

Last contest matches seemed to average 17-20k votes just eyeballing it. The PotDs leading into the contest were about 10k so honestly we haven't changed much in that regard. There's 127 matches so just math'ing that out gets you a range of 2.16m - 2.54m. If you think the votals will be lower (or for some reason higher?) then adjust accordingly.

And our average vote totals today are pretty similar to the PotDs leading up to the start of the 2018 contest.

Clearly the issue will be how well this contest draws in votes. This upcoming contest is unlikely to produce such a large increase in vote totals compared to the regular PotDs due to the overall field being much weaker than a normal Games Contest. The early rounds might also struggle more than usual to get votes, especially if voters are forced to pick a game from all 4 matches (in the first 2 rounds) before the voting form will allow them to submit their votes. For the casual voter, this means having to potentially vote in matches where they have played neither game just so they can vote for a game they really love in a different match on the same day.

My recommended guessing range will be 1900000 to 2300000. There's also going to be a 6 day break in the middle of the contest for the Second Chance Bracket. As we saw with the previous contest, the break actually hurt our vote totals after the contest resumed again as there weren't any bonus matches during the break to keep the casual voters engaged with the contest. So some casual voters weren't aware of the contest resuming again. Unless we get bonus matches during the break, you may want to factor in the potential impact it could have on vote totals later in the contest.

Today's poll is very interesting as the past 2 appearances of this poll proved the existence of an After Work Vote, but those earlier re-runs were both on a weekday. Today's poll is on a weekend, which changes things up as for the trends. So far, it seems like the work option is getting about one third of the percentage it received in the 2016 poll, so it seems like far less people are working today compared to a normal weekday. I am tracking this poll to see if the AWV shows up at any point during the poll.

How do you know this?

There was an competition in Japan back in 2016 to select a Pokemon for an event distribution for the 2016 Pokemon movie. Greninja was the winner of that competition and it wasn't even a legendary or mythical that won. In the full results, Reshiram finished in 21st place while Zekrom got 33rd place. The top 100 was heavily filled with legendaries or mythicals since this was deciding the event distribution for a Pokemon movie. Pokemon that have a major presence in the anime (such as a Pokemon owned by Ash or one of his friends) usually did very well in the competition since voting audience were generally heavy followers of the anime.

I really don't know what to expect from HGSS, because while it's going to be weaker than the original GSC, there's still the whole remake factor in play too. We've also never seen a Pokemon remake in a contest before.

HGSS was more than doubled by ME2 in the GotY polls, while also being weaker than Galaxy 2 (57.94% on HGSS).

All terrible. Galv and Joltik low votals is completely due to them having no presence in the anime at all. I guarantee you if Ash had had an adorable Joltik, it would have made top 3 for SURE. The anime gives such a huge boost to a lot of pokemon on these lists.

This was a worldwide competition, which means the Japanese fanbase can make some of their preferences more visible here. And since the anime is way more popular in Japan than the rest of the world, any Pokemon with an big anime presence could get a boost in this competition.

One of Japan's preferences being made known here was Reshiram finishing less than 2000 votes behind Zekrom. Outside of Japan, Zekrom is definitely more popular, but Reshiram is more popular in Japan.

I doubt it's held up all that well, but this is apparently the division for series that aren't held in as high of a regard as they used to be! Bloodstained did well in GOTY in 2019 despite the fact that I'd never heard of it before and I have no idea what it's about! I'd almost want to pick it here, but I won't go that far. Horizon did really well in a stacked 2017 GOTY. Aloy lost a close match to an Overwatch character, which probably doesn't mean that much for the game's chances. You should only be picking Fortnite to win anything if you're betting on a rally, and I don't make picks based on that. Borderlands 2 could win this fourpack based on name value, but I'm rolling with Horizon here.

Aloy losing a close match to D.Va probably doesn't mean much for the strength of Horizon because character strength usually doesn't have much correlation to the strength of the game they originated from. It's harder to create a strong character than to create a strong game.

It would be interesting to research what are the strongest games on this site that do not have a single character above the fodder line.

Skyward Sword isn't even the strongest snub. Here's a full list of the notable ones: https://docs.google.com/document/d/14VeTf4Po-9bCVUQB4wSYMfi0SJ02Lf-TwYmpLCHeJgQ/edit?usp=sharing

Super Mario Maker 2 not even getting in is very bad, as the game is a huge upgrade over the original Mario Maker. The game coming out in June of last year didn't help its cause either, since it would have had an easier time getting in if the game came out near the end of last year.

Some quick thoughts:
* Pokemon HG/SS is the only Pokemon game, which is kinda sad but somewhat warranted. The series has been going downhill, though I'm still a little surprised we didn't get at least 1 of the Gen 5 or 6 games.
* A Link Between Worlds got rekt with its bracket placement. It would've been interesting to see how it held up since 2013, but it's clearly just going to lose to Ultimate in round 2.

Disappointed that HGSS was the only Pokemon game. I didn't even bother nominating HGSS and put my Pokemon nominations into BW, XY, SM, and SwSh.

I'm glad A Link Between Worlds got in because it missed the 2015 contest, so now it gets a chance to validate its strength as a past GotY winner.

Gen 5 was once viewed as the downfall of the franchise. So was 4 and so was 3. Pokemon fans are fickle as fuck.

I know how the Pokemon fanbase works. At least since the start of Gen 3, they will criticize the most recent generation at the time. Due to the amount of criticism for the most recent generation, you have very few people willing to praise it due to the risk of getting into arguments with other people who hate the most recent generation. Once the next generation comes out, the fanbase turns their attention to criticizing the newest generation, so the previous generation that was being criticized in the past can be looked back on more positively with far less risk of having other people getting into arguments (as they're busy criticizing the newest generation).

Looks like we're going to have another Second Chance Bracket for this contest, along with a 6 day break in the middle of the contest to enter a Second Chance Bracket. A big criticism of the last contest was the 6 day break killing our vote totals after the contest resumed, since we had no matches during the break (not even bonus matches). Some of the casual voters weren't aware the contest resumed again after the break, which explains the reduced vote totals after the break.

We will also have the registered user bonus for this contest as well, where registered users have their vote counted as 2 votes instead.

You guys totally messed up big time when it came to Pokemon. Only one Pokemon game is very shameful. We should have at least tried to get Pokemon Black/White into the bracket.

Guess this site really doesn't care about Gen V-VIII

Gen 5 had the best chance of getting in from the main generation games of this decade. Gen 6 to 8 are the ones that are seen as being more of a disappointment among Pokemon fans, many of whom praise Gen 5 due to being the last generation before the disappointing 3DS era.

Vote totals for the top 30 Pokemon for each generation:

https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/154738784536231936/682784824100126722/unknown.png
https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/154738784536231936/682784887073538088/unknown.png

None of the Gen 1 starter middle evolutions got into the Top 30, but that was a highly competitive generation just to make Top 30. Charizard doesn't break 100000 votes as a result of the extreme competition near the top. Mew somehow manages to beat out Mewtwo, which I totally didn't expect. Squirtle was the winner of Board 8 Ranks the Gen I Pokemon, but it finishes 13th here.

Houndoom, the winner of Board 8 Ranks the Gen II Pokemon, only gets 20th for this generation. The difference between Lugia and Ho-Oh is the largest difference between the 2 main boxart legendaries for any generation. Lugia comes fairly close to tripling Ho-Oh in raw votes.

Gen 3 had the closest race for the number one spot, with less than 400 votes separating Rayquaza and Gardevoir. Latias ends up being more popular than Latios. In a rather unusual result, Aron ends up beating Aggron by more than 6000 votes.

Piplup > Empoleon for Gen 4 (Bane would totally like this result). Leafeon getting more votes than Vaporeon is clearly the biggest sign of Gen 1's stacked competition at the top.

Galvantula, the winner of Board 8 Ranks the Gen V Pokemon, fails to appear in the Top 30 for this generation. Joltik does make the Top 30, appearing at 27th.

Pangoro, the winner of Board 8 Ranks the Gen VI Pokemon, only gets 26th for this generation. Diancie at 16th place was better than I expected from it. Goomy also failed to finish higher than Goodra, maybe a sign of the Goomy memes dying off? (plus Gen 6 being at least 6 years old now)

Rowlet and Decidueye finishing 2nd and 3rd for this generation was a huge surprise because of the voting format. There should be a good deal of overlap between Rowlet and Decidueye in terms of people who like both of them, but could only vote for one of them per day. That's probably the only reason Mimikyu won this generation so easily. All of the starter final evolutions made the Top 10, even Primarina who is the least popular of the 3. Buzzwole is the only Ultra Beast to make the Top 30. Tapu Koko is the only Tapu to make the Top 30.

Snom may have pulled off an impressive 4th place this generation while breaking 38000 votes, but I think this result is fueled by rallies due to Gen 8 being so recent. This meant Snom could easily capitalize on the memes while they are most relevant. It would be interesting to see what happens to Snom in the future if we ever get more Pokemon of the Year competitions. Even though there's a large difference between Zacian and Zamazenta (slightly above a doubling), it's still not as huge as the beating that Lugia put on Ho-Oh for Gen 2. Although Hatterene only finished 13th here, it has potential to grow its popularity even more due to the Gardevoir comparisons. Plus Gardevoir had over 17 years to accumulate the popularity it has today. Also, Appletun > Flapple, like it should be.

Total number of votes if we looked at just the Top 30 Pokemon for each generation:

Gen 1 - 731203
Gen 2 - 666184
Gen 3 - 679819
Gen 4 - 644209
Gen 5 - 529559
Gen 6 - 636377
Gen 7 - 597601
Gen 8 - 619399

Gen 1's Top 30 still has more votes than all of the other generations, but I think Gen 1's votes are more heavily concentrated at the top compared to the later generations. There's also the possibility that more people chose to put in votes for Gen 1, and some people may have chosen to not vote for the later generations. I'm not sure if it was possible to not vote for certain generations, or if the voting form actually required one vote for each generation before it would accept the votes.

Gen 5 easily has the least concentrated Top 30. Genesect with 7905 votes is higher the number 30 ranked Pokemon for Gen 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7.

Also, the Japanese site for the results revealed that there were a total of 6608215 votes overall (spread out over 890 Pokemon). The Top 30 Pokemon for each generation combined for 5104351 votes (240 Pokemon), which meant there were 1503864 votes for the remaining 650 Pokemon.

Funny to see entire starter lines fill up top 30s.

If it were full evos only things would look way different.

The Chespin line was the only starter line that didn't get a single Pokemon in the Top 30 for any generation. It couldn't even make an appearance in Gen 6's Top 30 despite being the smallest generation.

I think Sylveon really benefitted from being the only Eevee in its generation. Every other one had the vote split multiple ways.

Plus it was in the smallest generation we've ever had.

Yea can we get the rest to see where our actual favorites ended up

Although I am happy to see Mimikyu and Umbreon there

You can actually see the Top 30 Pokemon for each generation on the Pokemon of the Year website, but you first need to select a region from the drop down list below "More results:", followed by scrolling through the entire Top 5 for that region before it will show you the rest of the Top 30.

If you could just choose any pokemon for your top 10 or whatever, these results would definitely be more Gen 1 biased.

Or if you were given the option of voting for 10 Pokemon, but could spread your votes between any of the generations.
