I haven't watched either in years, but I have to go with Alien. Aliens is excellent once it gets going, but I happened to catch the first half-hour on tv a few months ago and was surprised at how long it takes to get to that point; imo this slow of a buildup doesn't work as well in a sequel, when you as the audience are already familiar with the threat.

Personally, I grew up watching a 50 Greatest Cartoons VHS that had a lot of cartoons from the era of animation Cuphead emulates; many of them are equal parts 'children's entertainment' and 'frighten the little bastards into obedience.' Those old cartoons had a unique creepiness when they chose to go dark - huge devilish grins / glowing eyes, scratchy audio, haunting bass quartet vocals, things like that.

I wouldn't say Cuphead directly exudes this feeling, but it can conjure up subtle memories of such things if you're familiar with the old cartoons.

vaan and penelo are overhated. they're pretty basic and are just kinda there...but that's it. there's a least a whole tier of badness below characters like vaan and penelo.

At one point I agreed on both counts, and I still agree about Penelo. But on my last playthrough of XII it really sunk in for me that Vaan is genuinely bad. His presence and dialogue are both forced and irritating, to the point where the equally-forced acknowledgement of his overstayed presence by real main characters Balthier and Ashe almost feels like a meta-commentary at times ('oh yeah, by the way...I guess you should have my ship if something happens to me, seeing as how you're the eager apprentice by default.'). But I could look past all of this if Vaan sold himself with even an ounce of personality. He has all of the bad qualities of Tidus, but none of his endearing enthusiasm or personal arc payoff.

EDIT the most hilarious thing about Vaan's character for me is that the only time he shows a hint of personality is when he appears in FF Tactics A2, and even then he's merely hamming it up as a Diet Coke version of Balthier.

Balthier is the real main character - best lines, best personality, best character growth, most actual impact on the story. Ashe's entire arc boils down to the burning question of whether or not she'll use the magical equivalent of atomic warfare to smite her enemies. Shockingly...she doesn't.

D. There's plenty of characters worse than Wakka (I actually think Wakka's quite good, being considerably more layered than your average meathead sidekick), but Vaan takes the cake for me; he actively brings his game down while contributing little to nothing positive to it. He's a Raiden who did actual damage to his respective game. Incidentally, I never get the equal levels of hate for Penelo, who is benign at worst.

I think TC was banking exclusively on the whole 'Wakka started out as a racist!' angle to get a bunch of Confirms.
