ElatedVenusaur 06/25/20 9:49:59 PM #18 | Zeus posted... Pretty much. Hell, it's why DC exists at all.Two problems with that: 1) Its technically Marylands land and 2) Washington D.C. hates the idea of retrocession and so does Maryland(and theres no reason to believe Virginia would be any more amenable to this harebrained scheme). Why do you think Washingtonians should be denied the opportunity to decide their own fate? |

Topic | Does therapy work? |
ElatedVenusaur 06/25/20 6:13:23 PM #24 | Oh, definitely. In my early-20s, I was crippled by anxiety and depression and wasnt functional at all. Therapy gave me the tools to change that. Im still anxious, but I know how to handle it and am doing great. Of course, therapists vary in quality and tend to favor certain kinds of approaches, so even a great therapist may not be the right one for you. At the end of the day... Shelhamer92 posted... A therapist is like a personal trainer at the gym. You can show up and have them tell you what to do, but unless you put in the work then you won't see results. This is accurate. Another analogy Ive heard is that a therapist is a blind mechanic: they can help you understand whats happening and how to make it better, but only to the extent that you tell them whats going on and do the work. |

ElatedVenusaur 06/25/20 1:17:47 PM #11 | Jefferson County(which contains Louisville) did some real heavy-lifting for him. Still lots of votes left to be counted, of course(I think I saw somewhere they haven't even started counting mail-in ballots, for example). |
Topic | Nearly 8 years later, have you ever beaten FTL: Faster Than Light? |
ElatedVenusaur 06/25/20 1:11:40 PM #17 | Such a great game. Only ever beat it on Easy, but I did it a few times. Some bits of advice to new players: 1) You get more rewards from defeating encounters if you don't destroy the enemy ships(i.e. if you just kill the crew) 2) You should never be in a rush to get through a sector. Ideally you want to leave just before the Rebels catch up to you. If you they DO catch up to you, prioritize escaping: you get next to nothing for winning. Basically, scrap is everything; you need to get as much of it as possible as quickly as possible. 3) Always mash the green options. Lots of weapons, sub-systems, and different crew species give them. 4) Almost every stat is important. Yes, even doors: level 2 doors lock, which helps a ton with boarders. Life support is probably least important. Shields can be relied on, but only evasion and drones can save you from missiles and bombs. 5) Think carefully about your weapons load-out. Your weapons should work as a team to break down a ship(like, you shouldn't be using a beam ever unless you're confident you can create an opening for it). And certain seemingly niche options can be powerful in certain circumstances 6) The Rebel flagship is really tough and sometimes you just won't have the tools needed. Here are some tips: A) You definitely want to be able to board the thing, but leave one crew member alive. If you kill all the crew, it just starts running and repairing itself automatically like a drone, because it's evil. B) Focus your initial volley on bringing down its weapon systems, especially the ones that are disconnected from the rest of the ship(on Hard, that's apparently none of them lol). This will give you a lot more breathing room. C) Stealth can totally save your bacon. It doesn't even need to be leveled! D) You basically need to have at least level 3 shields to stand a chance. Don't neglect evasion either. 7) Try to match your crew members abilities to their roles. Zoltan and Engi should be running critical systems that benefit from their abilities(extra energy and faster repair, respectively). Mantis are ideal boarders. Manage Lanius carefully(they suck oxygen out of any room they're in, so don't leave them in the same room as a non-Lanius). You always want weapons, engines, and shields(in that order) to be staffed whenever possible(they charge faster), and you want to keep characters assigned consistently(including your pilot) so they get good at their jobs, which makes them a bit better. 8) You need to squeeze every last little advantage out of the game that you can. Everything counts, because anything could be the difference between dying or scraping by. Rarely is anything in FTL easy(or pretty). |

In terms of primarying, you throw some one at everyone you can, because you can never know who will stick. Me, personally? I'm bearish on Kentucky. I worry Booker will be sunk by nebulous concerns about "electability" with people who think other people won't vote for a progressive black man and thus it would be better to vote for the garbage white woman. I'm cautiously optimistic about Bowman though. Incumbents generally don't reach for the kitchen sink unless their internals are giving them bad news, and Engel has seemed increasingly desperate. |
Topic | How was Sparta able to beat achaemenid empire during the Greco-Persian Wars? |
ElatedVenusaur 06/23/20 9:52:33 AM #12 | DD Divine posted... Sparta sent trained soldiers to fight against slaved troops forced to fight. And most the battles took place in narrow passages giving the Spartans and their style the advantage. The Persians probably weren't fielding much of "slaved" troops. Their army would have been a diverse collection of troops pulled from every corner of their vast empire at the behest of satraps and client rulers looking to get in on the glory of the empire's latest conquest. The core, of course, were the Persians themselves, including their elite infantry, the so-called Immortals. This would have made their army unwieldy(lots of sub-commanders, all giving orders in different languages, who had varying levels of understanding of classical Persian) and uneven in quality. My (limited) understanding is that they generally weren't heavily-armed or armored and that their infantry generally fought in looser formations emphasizing mobility and flexibility. Thus they had great difficult against quality hoplites, who were generally heavily-armored(for the time) with metal shields and fought in a tight formation(though not as tight as a phalanx). Salamis, I believe Themistocles tricked the Persians into believing a good portion of the Greek fleet would flee, and it appeared to, but it in fact rowed around Salamis and hit the Persian fleet in the rear as it engaged the rest of the Greek fleet in a narrow channel, which created panic in the Persian fleet(the backbone of which were Phoenician and Ionian Greek sailors) and led to a large portion of it becoming trapped and being destroyed. By then, it was already late in the campaign season, so not long after a lot of the army(along with Xerxes) went home, leaving a smaller force behind to winter in the portions of Greece which had submitted or been conquered. That was defeated the next year at Plataea, after which the Persians decided the whole affair wasn't worth pursuing further. |

ElatedVenusaur 06/23/20 9:18:55 AM #6 | Pus_N_Pecans posted... I feel like psychology works a lot better on a micro level than trying to scale it up to fit the general population. People are so very different from one another, and their experiences play a significant role in the way they react to certain situations. Psychology is a subject where it's absolutely vital to be doing research with a holistic perspective. Humans are far too complex to give blanket statements. That's why there's sociology, though they do of course overlap a bit. |

Topic | Honestly stimulus checks are not what we need right now |
ElatedVenusaur 06/22/20 10:37:42 PM #13 | What should have happened at the beginning was that the government ought to have subsidized payrolls and preventing layoffs. That way, people would keep getting paid and their jobs wouldn't disappear(the problem with that being that many jobs don't pay people nearly enough to live on). Barring that, a monthly check through at least the end of the year would, in addition to the enhanced unemployment benefits that we got and the enhanced pay for "essential" workers we didn't get, have kept people afloat and mitigated the necessary economic pains of lockdowns and social distancing measures. Instead, the crisis has been appropriated to accelerate the transfer of wealth to the wealthiest Americans, and our economic suffering is only just beginning. |

Topic | How was UK able to beat Nazi Germany in WWII? |
ElatedVenusaur 06/22/20 1:38:45 AM #12 | The British had a powerful navy and air force backed by advantages like radar. Most importantly, two things happened: 1) Hitler became enraged that British air raids intentionally targeted civilian assets and ordered Goering to retaliate, distracting from the much more effective targeted raids on British airfields which had been seriously degrading the Royal Air Force. Air superiority should have been their sole objective: it was what would have made an invasion at all plausible and would have allowed them to ravage British industrial, military, and naval assets with virtual impunity. 2) Hitler became frustrated with the lack of progress and got distracted by a newer, shinier plan: Operation Barbarossa, because Hitler was an impatient idiot. |
