i could never get into super circuit, and i bought it on release. for some reason it felt dated and slow, even for the time, and despite (as the article states) its lovely sprite-based pixel art worlds.

and i loved f-zero maximum velocity, which also was stuck in flat snes-style mode 7 purgatory! i'm not sure it's an entirely fair take, but SC never resonated with me strongly in any way

i still think 64 has the best battle mode

none of the other subsequent games match (or have tried to match!) its endurance, war-of-attrition, player-elimination style - instead focusing on quicker battles in smaller arenas.

which is fine, but not what i loved about mk64 battles in, say, block fort - there's still no other mk game that gives that kind of experience.

i think wii's underrated, but they nailed the top two

double dash still holds up amazingly in 2020, which is a testament to the quality of both its tracks and unique gameplay elements. not to mention, the mini-turbo system that was adopted in this game (largely just a streamlined mk64 design) has been in every game since.

mk8 has its critics but imo the game is just packed with both content and polish from top to bottom, and it shows. the fact that it landed so strongly despite debuting on nintendo's least successful ever console speaks volumes to how much they nailed it.

spirit island is far too long and arduous for what i want a co-op game to be (i may have said this earlier!)
aeon's end has enough long-term thinking mixed with "you know what, i think i'll go this route" and a nice pinch of randomness to make a beautiful co-op stew

...i dont know what i was trying to do metaphorically there. but its good! and i dont even do solo games too often but aeon's is a perfect one for it

and hey, what do you know, it has a supply of cards and not a market row. almost like that's a superior idea for a deckbuilder or something!!

the latest expansion was really good, unfortunately i didn't get to finish the last boss with my group cause of the 'rona. goddamn it :(

it's a rad solo game too! i've had a good time going two-handed against some of the hard rules bosses and holy hell are they difficult.

this sounds fun! for whatever reason, i have a hard time ranking certain types of games among others in my favorites list - and social deduction games are top on the list. i basically put the resistance/avalon up there in the top 10 to take the token spot of appreciation and leave everything else behind, but i do enjoy the genre a lot.

would be fun to see a list of the social deduction games all ranked at the end of this list to see where everything stacks up, then i could argue over which ones are too high! :p

also isle of skye is totally cool too, great western trail is mostly fine, i heard someone complain about indians but man they are totally fine there, it's abstracted to a reasonable point unlike maracaibo and mombasa where the uncomfortableness bubbles up to and across the surface

my biggest problem with great western trail is the buildings, which seem super important and powerful but require a lot of trial-and-error to figure out what is actually the best strategically

it's a game that i enjoyed a pretty decent amount (and seemed to be pretty good at?) despite being heavier than what i like most of the time. it's still a bit heavy for me tbqh but it is good! and is one of the least thematically dicey games from alex pfister, which is a plus

god damn i love pictomania
as someone who is both fond of real-time games and drawing games, it hits a special sweet spot for me. i can understand why it's not everyone's cup of tea

pandemic legacy s1 was definitely the better experience (to me) versus s2, though i enjoyed both. without spoilers, i think s1 is just a little more accessible and compelling, while s2 has a lot more value for your choices (good and bad) and is a little less narratively hooking. (december in s2 was awesome though.)

gizmos is definitely more complex, but when i want an engine building game, i like one that actually lets me build an engine. i think there's enough "random" parts that the randomness balances out, and obviously like splendor you can reserve cards in the center rows that you feel are essential

CSR has been tagged a splendor-killer. the thought definitely occurred to me - a simple engine-builder where you're trying to assemble sets of cubes/tokens to fulfill orders. to me splendor feels like a tighter design (in something of the way dominion has the tightest deck-builder design), while century is actually less interactive

yep, and there's a game i prefer vastly to both of them (gizmos) that actually does what i wanted those games to do.
that said, i get the appeal, and they aren't bad games!

spirit island is a good game, but it's just more complex than the kind of game i want from a co-op. really, i think it brings about a huge sense of AP, because it generally feels pretty solvable, and highly optimizable if players really talk things through, but there are so many possible decisions and just a lot of stuff to consider, that it takes too long to get there

the theme is neat though!

base (1st edition) dominion is a little weak in engine potential, but if you're playing with basically a handful of any of the expansions (and certainly if you're using all of them) multi-card engines tend to be much much stronger than any fairly basic money strategy

anyway, dominion is my favorite game. it's a mechanical triumph, ingeniously working together deck-building CCGs with euro engine builders through the now-ubiquitous "deck-building game" mechanics

more amazing to me is that it's a game whose most important game options can and will vary every time. yes, there are many +cards, +actions, etc cards, but the fact that the game not only works with any choice of 10, but shines because of what's missing or included each time, still blows me away.

donald x's other games have similar variety included, and i like several of them a lot, but none meets the same exceptional standard impossibly set by dominion
