Cuphead's doing worse than expected for sure, but it was a good point someone had about GTA's bracket-support. Another update or two will tell us a lot.

Feeling good about Xenoblade > Persona 3 at the moment.

Can't wait for all the people who complained about rallies to be okay with this

You could win me over on companies getting more involved in rallying for matches if most of them did. I feel like newer companies are more likely to take the lead on a movement like this than Nintendo and Square.

As is though...it's wacky-fun hype but also now may cost us the nail-biter finish we were looking likely to have. Mixed feelings.

I think the talking point of "we want accurate information for predicting future contests" is misleading. We want accurate information for understanding where we as GameFAQs-minded people are. That will always shift over time, but if nobody here likes LoL then we don't feel represented when Draven rushes it's way from another site to a championship. Predicting future contests better isn't the pressing matter for me there.

Abd if rallies are better, somebody build a bracket based around the most rally-capable games and we'll see how exciting that is. Seed it and set the matches up.

Octopath gained 100 extra votes in 10 minutes the moment the rally was pinned. That's not an assumption, the data is there.

Between this and the reddit sticky being up for about two and a half hours now, it seems clear this is gonna make an impact on a game with a vote lead of 166. Octopath absolutely could win this without the rallies, but this is assistance that can decide a winner too.

Is this rally more fun for anyone else now than the match already was? I'll deal with one this size, but I wouldn't call it more fun than before the rally either.

Weird thing to see coming ahead soon.

Top two LoZ-games from the '90s: OoT and LttP
Top two LoZ-games from the 2000s: MM and TP
Top two LoZ-games from the '10s: BotW and LBW

We are on our way to seeing a SIGNIFICANTLY bigger gap between the top two LoZ-games this decade compared to the others.

SSBU/LoZ:LBW is the highest-quality match when combining the two games this contest...too bad the wrong game's winning between them, but both are outstanding.

I bragged on SMO last round as a Star of the Round, but this time I am not. 71% on DMC5 versus 65% on LoZ:LBW is a no-brainer to me unless you think SSBU is SFF'ing LoZ:LBW, but I don't believe that's happening here.

So after today, it's hard to deny Octopath Traveler is legit. It's narrowly between Undertale and Shovel Knight...and I know as someone who gave Undertale Turd of the Round it's easy to diss it for not going three rounds deep like many of us expected, but we're starting to get a feel for the top ranges of our strongest indie games and Octopath is right there with the indie games. I might take two other indie games over Octopath, and if that's all then Undertale losing to Octopath be 3.29% is pretty redeeming in its own right. It still falls short to me since I thought Undertale would be the strongest indie game, but this isn't an embarrassing difference of strength -- just a surprising opponent.

And now I'm back to not ruling out Undertale beating FFXV.

REmake 2/Bloodborne is gonna be a good match next round. I can see FE:A getting 55% or so on DOOM, but I also can't see Resident Evil fans letting this one drop in a wave of REmake 3 fans coming to the site. I expect that one to be competitive.

Hell of a show by ME2, too (especially if FO 4 was constant which lol it's not, but just imagine the reactions if it beat The Witcher 3 by just a little less than this). I've got REmake 2 > ME2 in my bracket but I'm inclined to think this puts ME2 into favorite-status.

More seriously, 2016 wasn't a great year for games being strong here:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/6575-best-of-2016-game-of-the-year-final-vote

FF15 ended up winning GotY here, but it did lose this poll to a Pokemon game before doing that so that'll question its ceiling in a contest. We also saw Uncharted 4 drop its match again Mario Kart 8 easily.

If we go back one poll to the first overall GotY that year:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/6574-best-of-2016-game-of-the-year

I wasn't impressed with Overwatch's win over Death Stranding. DOOM crushed INSIDE and Stardew Valley smacked up Destiny, definitely, but those matches might not mean that much. We'll learn more about Overwatch/DOOM/SV when they face Xenoblade/REmake 2/SMG2 this round.

Meanwhile, Hollow Knight's exceeding expectations and is another game from 2017 that has been looking good in the meanwhile, however, so it's impressing me more than FF15 is failing me.

LoZ:SS may be the weakest Zelda game, but in 2011 it still beat Batman: Arkham City and Portal 2 and those two games are still favored to reach the third round. We see LoZ:LBW still looking like a game with legitimate strength too, so...barring abnormal contest draws, I think LoZ:SS would have been fine.

and then backpedaled afterwards because we never "officially" made a bet

This was the same contest I had my only account bet on, where I predicted Solid Snake would beat Mega Man and BT predicted otherwise. Our stipulation was that Zero couldn't be in the poll.

Zero made the poll.

It was pretty disappointing we didn't get that match...but the last time this topic came up in here, to BT's credit, he owned Mega Man was gonna lose that match as we originally bet on with or without Zero.
