I personally would put Half-Life and Metroid Prime near the top of the storytelling tier list because I really really value the sense of real discovery and exploration these games give you. I love how these games let you experience a story in a way that other mediums just can't. For example, in Metroid Prime, you're as engaged with the lore and story as you want to be. You scan the world for detailed log books and codex entries and such, and reading them is what reveals the story and history of the world. It's information that isn't spoonfed to the player, it's framed in such a way as to where the player actually feels like they discovered or truly learned that information in the context of the game. It's a really immersive feeling. Half-Life does a similar thing. Instead of force feeding the player exposition through cutscenes or over-explanatory dialog, the player is really made to feel like they're a part of the world. The story is happening around the player, whether or not they're there, and every single story element is presented to the player as if it was being presented to Gordon. It gives me the same immersive feeling that Metroid Prime does. Everything story-related feels organic to the situation, and not simply information given to the player so that they understand. It's really good. But the point is that those are games I would consider to have really really very good stories, despite the actual content of their stories not really being amazing or anything. But that's what I value in game stories: the way they're presented. What you value may be different >_> also why tf did I type this long-ass response lmao edit: reading over this post again it's basically me talking about why Half-life and metroid prime are my favorites for the same reason Citizen Kane is universally applauded: pioneering storytelling techniques, not necessarily a good actual storyline. --- |
