It used to be the case where you could simply say, "Trump is an asshole, but look how many people Dubya killed, or "think of the cost of the iraq war, whereas Trump is doing good for the economy (apparently)".

And the BBC isn't unbiased at all anymore. I have always been completely against the TV license, but especially now that they're so obviously a left-wing news organisation (would feel the same way if they had become obviously right-wing).

I wonder about this sometimes. How are we defining bias? For example, is it that they favour one kind of news (that is true) over another kind of news that is true? Or is it when a fact appears to have a distinction towards a set of politics held by a particular party, is that bias? Is it truly important to be exactly, equivocally middle ground on every issue?

To give it an example, if climate change is seen as a "left" issue, and climate change denial is seen as a "right" issue, and the BBC says that climate change is real according to NASA, is that an example of left wing bias? Should they be taking care to say, "Some people say it's real, others don't, we can't say for sure but these are the opinions".

We're getting a bit off topic here but I'm curious what you mean.

No I mean his argument really started by saying his problem with the article is that it shames white people, when it did not shame white people at all. I.e. he wasn't making a subtle observation about an implicit subtext in what "black lives matters" means as a movement. He just straight up lied about what was written, because he didn't read it.

And in that he showed where his energy is. He saw the headline and immediately projected a fully formed strawman over the entire thing based on his own prejudices, which he later revealed explicitly with the rest of his arguments.

But if we're going to talk about implications, I still think too many people hear "all white people need to be cancelled" and refuse to hear "there is an evident problem with white supremacy in the police force."

I got into a hilarious argument on reddit about this the other day (I know, the joke is on me). Basically, a food website that the subreddit tends to repost wrote a post simply declaring "black lives matter". The subreddit also reposted this. One of the reddit posters said, "Would it be racist to say that I plan to unsubscribe from this subreddit because of this article?" Nearly everyone agreed that yes, yes it was.

We got into a nice chat. His position was that he hated the white guilt shaming and that the entire thing is just a way to put down white people. I asked him where he got that idea, since the article in question didn't have a single mention about white people in it. It didn't even say anything about police brutality. It just said black lives matter.

he kept shifting these goalposts until he arrived at the inevitable conclusion for these people. "Racism doesn't exist, but reverse racism exists, and it's black people who have the upper hand now because of the special treatment they receive through things like affirmative action. All lives matter." That was his final argument.

Astonishing how ready these fuckers are to out themselves without any external help. Imagine how fragile your sense of worth is that you hear someone else talk about their problems and your only response is to feel that it's an attack on you.

Here's what happens. You get a threatening letter. It looks on the outside of the envelope like the most serious letter you've ever received.

You letter itself is full of incredibly harsh language. It gives you the impression that MI6 is going to bust down your door and scan your apartment for anything plugged into the wall or any signs of a TV, and then you'll be dragged through the Supreme Court and have your lifesavings appropriated. They demand you either pay the license or declare legally that you do not own a TV. They don't really mention that it's fine to have a TV and you're just not allowed to watch live stuff on it, like the BBC.

The letters will persist. On rare occasion one of these pricks will show up at your door and act like he's here from the mob to collect protection money. They use scare and bully tactics to try and squeeze money out of you.

If you don't give them anything, or use a fake address, nothing ever comes of it. These guys have no authority and no goddamn right to actually get anything out of you. But if you give them an inch, let them into your house and allow them to collect all this evidence, then they have an argument.

The entire thing is a total fucking scam and the government actually supports it, because it's revenue.

I fucking seethe every time I get one of these letters, simply because they exist.

I was watching that famous Richard Feynman video where he sums up the scientific method, and then summarily throws psychology under the bus. Timestamp at 5:35s:

The gist is that psychology can't provide laws because what we understand about things like "love" and other emotions is too vague to be able to quantify, and therefore can't be put into a scientific model (in his example, Aaron hates his mother, it is believed that it is because she neglected him as a child. Further examination reveals that she was actually overbearing and coddled him. Therefore, too much/too little love causes Aaron to hate his mother. You can pretty much throw a dart anywhere on the "love" chart to explain any of Aaron's feelings towards his mother.

That said, this video is from like the early 60s, and I'm sure Feynman had his biases. But how does the field deal with the problem of how to quantify ostensibly vague psychological ideas into computational models?

I remember I once kissed a girl after spending like two hours talking with her over coffee. She was smiley and kind of shy, and I remember thinking the date was going really well.

But a libelous public statement demands the conversation, and I honestly think attacking Joes reputation over an incident where no violence occurred is inappropriate. All these events are framed from the perspective of a meek individual in a way that makes them sound calculated. It really just sounds like two socially awkward people learning to navigate boundaries. And judging by Joes response, this might be the first time hes heard this perspective and thought nothing serious had occurred.

I think the conversation (in general, not simply this case) is coloured by the sheer, overwhelming problem that has existed for so long with no meaningful change: women get sexually assaulted all the time and almost never have any legal or social recourse for it. If guys think that some metoo stories on twitter is creating an unprecedented situation where someone could lie and ruin another person reputation, they come across a bit ignorant of the reality: even when women tell the truth, historically the only reputation that gets ruined is their own.

So yes, there can conceivably be times that women lie about an experience, or exaggerate, or maybe the consequences seem disproportionate. But it's also hard to take the arguments seriously from people who tirelessly point that stuff out when you know they never once seriously thought about the injustice of sexual assault accusations until men started to be actually called out.

It really does for me draw a lot of parallels with what is happening with BLM right now. Suddenly everyone is in a frenzy to show the good cops, and the times black people were the bad guys, and how white people can be victims too. All true points but brought up only to distract from the original problem that was highlighted.

I'm glad you used the theft example because that's a good one. This is because, unlike Zelda, Skyrim and Dark Souls, the difficulty in games like Diablo, Path of Exile etc. scales up so high at the max levels that you can't do anything if you don't min/max to the absolute full extent that the game allows. You start Diablo 3 dealing like single to low double-digit damage, but if you wanna push Greater Rifts, your damage output has to be in the trillions for the last few levels.

I know this and I've got a couple of characters to around torment 13 or something, but after a point my interest starts to wane.

If we were to compare different fandoms and how the fans speak about the game

Zelda: You wanna get as many shrines as you can because then you can max out your stamina to help climb. Also don't worry about breaking your weapons, you'll find more

Skyrim: Regardless of what class and race you pick you'll eventually end up as a sneak archer

Dark Souls: This game isn't hard, you just need to redo the same thing over and over again for 60 hours and eventually you'll get past the first area. Just be patient with your attacks

And then, games like Diablo, Path of Exile, etc: So what you're going to want to do is get your crit to TK on the second debuff to max stack restack your hatred, combine with Infinity shout (with the Helm of Grief obviously) for a 18.4% cumulative damage boost every 3 seconds. Now this is obviously a starter build and I've only put 300 hours in but you get the idea, once you start pushing past torment 97 you're going to need the gloves of anguish with at least a 4% crit simp TK RG TKN otherwise you'll be debuffing the slack on the tamp

I think what bewilders me more is that almost without exception, all the worst sounding abilities are always the best ones. Damage output increases by 4000% every second - "Nah bro that sucks." Change to apply a 0.3% critical every 3rd attack - "Totally OP bro, that skill is basically broken. "

This is just a roundabout way of saying that I suck at maths

Bad criticism: People get overly attached to weapons despite thst fact that they're meant to be used and you will find more good weapons. Thereby they hoarde and ruin the core gameplay loop by their own volition.

Valid criticism: While there are loads of puzzle solving, the breakdown into shrines and samey divine beasts results in not really having memorable dungeoneering compared to past games in the series. Enemies are fantastic and defined, but with a disappointing lack of variety. The upgrade system for armor is also pretty vanilla without any depth and needlessly prolonged (as in the process of upgrading each item, one at a time, one upgrade at a time, each with a semi-skippable cutscene).

It's terrifying that this guy did everything correctly and knew exactly how to behave and even had the "I'm a cop" excuse and STILL could easily have died.

Had he not been a cop, you can see how this could have gone. Cop shoots him for reaching for his wallet. No body cam. Tells his supervisor that he feared for his life and the report shows that multiple weapons were found in the car.
