Well, the thread turned into a discussion about BLM. The point I made was that the attempt to paint BLM protests as violent aren't honest based on this single instance because the persons involved will likely be charged. Cops who act institutionally racist are variably unpunished.

Floyd became a symbol for this because statistically black men are treated worse by cops than white men. This is a statistical fact, so the racism in the interaction is the fact that if Floyd wasn't black, he would've been less likely to be murdered.

Now, this may shock you, but the Floyd/Chauvin interaction is used as an easy, catch-all example and kicked off the new wave of BLM protests because it encapsulates the lack of accountability towards police, where Chauvin wasn't actually charged with anything until an entire precinct was burned down whereas the guy who kicked the truck owner is likely already in custody or actively being searched for.

How am I coming into this thread 40 minutes and 35 posts deep and don't see anybody pointing out that this clearly isn't something happening at a BLM protest, it's just a video of people going crazy on each other and the video title labeling them as "BLM Antifa?"

It's probable that it has nothing to do with BLM or Antifa, but it's worth noting that even if it did, the comparisons and implications by various posters in this thread are disingenuous.

Kind of like how EVERYONE condemned the officer who killed George Floyd. Funny thing, double standards.

That was not the only example of blatant racial injustice by the police (or murder on their part), so I'm not sure what double standards you're pointing to here. It took a wave of protests for Chauvin to even be charged, and prominent media figures still tried to run Floyd's name through the mud anyway.

Well, people seem to agree that the people assaulting others here are bad, and in the wrong. The issue is that certain people in this thread as using this attack as an excuse to condemn BLM through false equivalencies and mental gymnastics, even though it's doubtless that the people who did this will be punished (unlike cops who commit murders.)

Well, the obvious point to make here is that cops ARE the institutions and are actively protected and aren't often punished for racial biases. Conversely, it's likely that these people will be imprisoned and otherwise disavowed.

Dan Carlin brought this up many, many, many years ago in his podcast analyzing Ghengis Khan and at one point noted that the passage of time often softens people on death counts. We still feel the pain of the Holocaust today because it's very recent, but the mass killings done by Ghengis Khan were so, so long ago that we take a more clinical approach and end up disregarding the death and suffering he caused.

Yes. If you lack these things the result is immature people unable to responsibly handle complex emotions and subject matter. This isnt the creators fault his audience is full of simpletons. Theres no excuse for people without tact and respect to not handle this any other way then to make fun of it. None.

I'm not being immature about this. I'm providing a critical perspective of why its intent flopped. While shows and comics can weave between comedy and drama, this series sold itself much too hard on lazy & repetitive comedy to justify a miscarriage subplot. Tonal whiplash is a real flaw, and the creator wishing to have people respect his work doesn't function if it's juxtaposted by the rest of his comic.

The common theme here (by you calling his readership stupid and the unearned self-importance of the strip itself) is pretentiousness. People aren't stupid because they look at tonal whiplash spawned from a bad idea and laugh at it.

TC, people have a right to make fun of bad melodrama. There's nothing wrong with handling real issues, but if you lack tact and do not understand tone, the inevitable result will be mockery. Defending a work by saying "but it's REAL DARK stuff!!!" isn't and never will be a real defense because it prescribes value based on the subject matter and not how it's handled.

This is why it became a meme. It tackles shocking subject matter with no tact to the point where it becomes unintentionally funny.

Silly thread. I yank mine off when I get to the car because my local store doesn't run the AC worth shit and it's 100 degrees with a heat index of 110 on the parking lot. I can breathe fine, but I'm mentally/physically exhausted and need to literally cool off because there's tons of heat on my head.

Just did a 10 mile walk in under 3 hours last Friday, too. I'm pretty fit, I wear masks as required and give bad looks to people who don't. There's no need to gatekeep mask wearing because people take theirs off when it's safe???

Here, I'm listing out all their actions REVOLVING around the pandemic, and especially the unprecedented censorship of the discussion of HCQ. Actions also convey words. "Senator says the economy is fine, but then sells 1 million dollars worth of stocks the week of the statement just in time for the market to crash", i.e. Senator is making false claims to reassure the populace and is trying to get the heck out the market to protect their wealth. "Government says Trump is BSing about HCQ, but they made an unprecedented move of making it harder to access and censored discussions on it" i.e. they're hiding information on HCQ and know more than they let on on its effectiveness. And they want to push for the vaccine solution (whom a number of companies can profit considerably from).

What's a sermon on succubi from years ago from a doctor who is reiterating the support the drug that a bunch of other reputable doctors are supporting supposed to tell you about the doctor's feelings on HCQ?

Fauci was correct to lie about mask effectiveness, and it wasn't just him, it was the Surgeon General. No action can feasibly be taken at the local level against the coronavirus if your response begins with "HEY MASKS ARE EFFECTIVE, PARTICULARLY N95 ONES".

Why? Because Americans would instantly buy them at a rate that causes shortages. Not sure if you noticed, but Americans are fucking terrible at civic duty. A real, strong segment of the population here does not understand that they are vectors for disease and refuse to wear masks because "muh freedoms." A segment of the population bought out large quantities of toilet paper and sanitizer in order to scalp for a quick buck.

If doctors had difficulty getting adequate mask supply early on, the chain of response to the virus is more likely to violently collapse when all your health professionals got sick because people went and hoarded masks causing a shortage for hospital staff.

Unlike Trump, who lies regularly and has now given platform to a quack with no credentials, the CDC and Surgeon General decided - pragmatically - to initially deny the usefulness of masks, and once they got adequate supply, began advocating for more mask usage. Entirely ethical? No. Could they have maybe advocated for cloth masks? Yes. Was it a good read on how Americans are selfish and lacking in self-control? Yes, and to that extent, it was a correct decision to make.

It's bizarre to me that conservatives, who regularly argue on pragmatic terms, refuse to understand or see this nuance in crisis response, and it's insane they defend Trump on this when Trump could've made a pivot of masks tremendously effective by working with them on this and start to publicly appear with masks.

His response is bad. He is platforming an anti-vaxxer who believes in demon sperm that acts as a lightning rod for intense scrutiny when he could've platformed or promoted any competent doctor that wasn't a fucking nut. Stop defending the indefensible, you are killing your soul by selling out this hard for a billionaire President who will never personally acknowledge you. Jesus Christ, man.

God, seeing people cling to literally anything to defend Trump, no matter how tangential, just seeing if they can find one bright red piece on a rotten strawberry, is so sad at this point. You can see the personal investment pouring out.

This lady is a whackjob. No iota of what she says should be considered relevant because she effectively poisons the well by believing in crazy nonsense. She isn't getting a ball rolling, she's becoming a personality that's promoting talking points. If there's legitimacy to HCQ, then sourcing this person - involving them at all - is the worst idea imaginable, because they clearly aren't qualified, clearly believe and repeat nonsense, and act as magnets for scrutiny.

Care me explain on what you mean with Rorschach? It has been years since I watched the movie and I never read the comic. Only watched a couple of episodes of the miniseries. Spoil away

Rorshach is, per Alan Moore, a deconstruction of characters like Batman. He's a weirdo and a loner with very extreme views on the world. This doesn't remove his humanity or make him unsympathetic, but per Moore himself, "If you think he's an idol, please get away from me."

In context: Rorshach reads a right-wing nationalist tabloid in the comic and sends his diary to them before he dies, which contains the truth about what Ozymandias does.

In the context of the show, it's clear that the Seventh Kavalry spawned from this in an environment where a liberal had been president for 20+ years. They take quotes from Rorshach and seem to zero in on his extreme beliefs about lacking comprise and seeing the world in black & white.

For whatever reason, people misinterpreted this as the director calling Rorshach a white supremacist, even though it's painfully obvious that he diary was shown to people through the lens of an extremist tabloid and used to fuel a very different agenda from Rorshach's that fit the political split depicted in-universe by the time Redford was in office for over 2 decades.
