Legally if you repost something and explain why you are doing it such as critiquing the art itself it would be covered under Fair Use.

Watermarking, or posting just a lower-quality version online - one that would still look good on screen for your viewers but not necessarily for an art thief's print or clothing design.

Lower-quality art can be edited with noise cancellation, though it still won't be the same.

This explains nothing. 99.99% of the audience that saw the reposts never would have seen your thing otherwise. Even if none of them decide to follow the original artist, the original artist loses nothing, because none of those people were going to follow the original artist anyway.

Or you could simply share links to art, to support the artists. It's called reblogging.

That's not true. They copy all the time in Japan and they let them do it because it gives the original works free publicity.

First of all, Japanese artists actually have multiple accounts where they may post the same art, and secondly, most of them FROWN upon unauthorized reposts.

If it's digital art, add a laplace (or whatever) watermark. It's invisible to the naked eye, but if you perform a laplace deform (or whatever method you choose) your signature shows up bright as day.

I say laplace but any techno-jargon "Edge Detect" tool where you can darken an image by a singular unit to add an invisible signature.

It is one of the first things to get destroyed when someone re-uploads something or converts to a lossy format, which could be argued is "transformative", but if the invisible watermark is still findable then it's proof of theft.

Well, this sounds interesting.

Also maybe consider being grateful that you're popular enough for your work to be "stolen and desecrated", which is almost certainly not going to happen unless you're successful.

It's a different story in Japan. Japanese artists, despite their talents, care for popularity a lot less than the western do. Rather, they draw mainly because they want to, and that they are more hesitant to publish art due to a firm belief in privacy and intellectual rights. If their art get stolen, then they simply delete their works and even their accounts. And once the artists delete their accounts, they typically never come back.
