So are you saying that the information relayed in the video is untrue? Because there's a difference between "this person has a bias that I disagree with" and "this person is objectively incorrect". If the person is objectively incorrect (the only thing I care about), then I'll dig deeper.

Moreso the video is entirely based on one study that is incredibly flawed and biased, to the extent that taking any conclusions from said study is intellectually dishonest.

Its possible the video isn't objectively incorrect, but it being a non-peer-reviewed study from a TERF with cherry picked data to make it look like she worked backwards to justify her own conclusions isn't good enough.

True. I'm having a look at these papers in the comments. Am I correct with this one that it suggests that bone mass and density is preserved in the first 1-2 years of transitioning?

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25377496/

Anyway, my takeaway here is that if transitioning after X amount of time removes any perceived "male" performance advantage, then there's no argument anymore to be had. That amount of time (X) would be the marker that should be where MTF athletes compete in the female category, in my view. I just don't think self-ID alone works for sport.

This was my takeaway as well, the real controversy seems to be exactly where to put the line of where "X" should be. Although its worth taking note of most sports do not rely on self ID-ing. You can't just say "I'm a woman now" and compete in the women's divisions, its never been that acceptable.

I would completely agree that self-ID isn't good enough for competitive sports. But that's not the situation we have now.

I don't think there's any risk of MTF athletes dominating womens sport. Nor do I think there even will be many. Nor do I think that people are transitioning for the purpose of winning medals, that one is the most ridiculous of the lot.

But I do think it's very reasonable to consider that at the top level of sport elite athletes (you know, those guys who cheat all the damn time) could easily abuse a well-meaning policy if its not carefully constructed. If elite athletes will risk their health and their credibility to take performance enhancing drugs to win medals, I don't think it's unfeasible that they would abuse a system like this to do so. I.e. a cis athlete could use a loose policy guideline to win in a category they have a better chance in.

And I also think if sports have a welfare concern (like rugby seems to), they need to be very, very sure.

In these cases it would need to have better regulations, I'd agree with that. Although in order to compete at a competitive level, you need year(s) of intervention, such as HRT. And given how much something like HRT can drastically affect your body (permanently) I really don't think that many athletes would be willing to make that kind of sacrifice, just for a chance to dominate a different division.

It should just be enough to say "this study is wrong because X". I kind of have a problem with the circular reasoning that terf gets thrown around with now. It's used as a hammer to smash the research and not the other way around.

Another source might be Ross Tucker as above.

And I wish this sort of skepticism was applied to the study that Joanna Harper did on distance runners that is quoted every time this thread comes up, but it's not.

Thats fair. The problems with the study itself are more in line with "she's ignoring a lot of the previous research into the topic" and basically comes down to she started at the conclusion and worked backwards. So in this situation the entire study is organized with malicious intent.

If you look at the reddit post there are links to papers about cherry picking data or using inaccurate data, or just poor methodology in order to justify the conclusion she started at.

The TERF is just an explanation for why this study is so flawed.

Not just this, but the show spent the last 6 seasons beating you over the head with how Ted and Robin are never ever ever ever ever going to be together, they just aren't right for each other, and 6 seasons of establishing Barney as the guy who's actually right for Robin, only to literally throw all of that away in the last episode.

It would have been a fine finale in like season 3, but not in season 9.

This is about the extended universe. Everyone besides Ani and Luke have been no bodies. Being a Jedi has never been a blood thing pass down by just the right family . That happened once. This is like watching the X-men and having it be a big reveal that oh this mutant parents were nobodies. That isn't anything new. The reason we assumed Rey's parent were someone besides then writers literally giving up that idea is because of her ungodly powers and the fact that Luke's weapon was calling to her. That normally doesn't happen to any normal Jedi.

The force I s a bloodline thing as far as the movies are concerned, since nobody reads the EU. The reason everyone thought Rey's parents were someone was that basically every major character in the series could effectively be linked to Luke or Anakin Skywalker.

Also Rey being overpowered is one of the stupidest complaints I hear about the sequels. Like she barely even does anything.

cjsdowg posted...
You want a story about nobody becoming a hero. You have Finn right there but he was too black for RJ

It wasn't till Rise of Skywalker when he was given literally nothing to do though. If you didn't like the casino subplot, fine, but Finn got a major arc in the movie.

And speaking about Finn making a Choice. In 7 he made the choice to stop running and fight. He put down the shields because saving Rey. So even in 7 he was thinking about the bigger picture.

Finn's choice in 7 was to fight but not to be a rebel, the whole story in TLJ is him actually wanting to fight for something. He didn't put down the shields because Rey was some force-chosen one, he just wanted to save his friend. In fact he put the entire resistance at risk to do so because he didn't actually know how to lower the shields.

A lot of Rose's dialogue in TLJ did feel like a bad attempt at a woke tweet followed by an awkward mic drop, but she kind of had to be as the one side of Finn's conscience (with DJ being the "screw everyone else you look out for you")

Rose Tico is off the team, and she farts around base camp in this movie. It turns out Rey IS special after all, just for the wrong reasons. Her and Kylo DO have a force bond, and their connection is so strong that they kiss at the end of the movie.

Here are some other details that might be of interest to you, with MASSIVE SPOILERS. As in, I spoil an entire plot thread. Don't click here if you don't want like half of the movie to be spoiled, including some ending stuff.

The Leia performance they rigged up with CG and cut footage is stilted, baffling and about as respectful as shoving a hand up her ass and making her sing showtunes. Rey has a force move that lets her heal others using her own life force out of nowhere - it feels like the laziest deus ex machina ever, even considering dumb bullshit like the Jedi mind trick. There's a pointless, time-wasting plot about a spy in the First Order. It's Hux, and he dies 5 minutes after revealing his treachery. Rey uses force lightning and supposedly kills Chewbacca, but he shows up less than 5 minutes later because she blew up the wrong spaceship. Palpatine does fuck-all except for executing a pathetic, barely coherent Batman gambit at the end, he's only there to put butts in seats.

this is hardly a comprehensive list, but these are some of my nitpicks with the movie.

To add on to some of these

  • Rose isn't just off the team, she's been demoted to basically a background character best known for being literally the only rebel outside our main characters with a line
  • Hux being so frustrated with Kylo he'd **** over his own team just to beat him makes perfect sense for Hux but it doesn't get to go anywhere and is basically just an attempt to get him out of the story and replace him with a more generic "evil guy"
  • I'm going to defend the Jedi-heal trick though. It was introduced early in the movie and came back later on, showed Rey doing some cool training in the beginning, There's not much else they could have done to get the idea over

  • Kylo Ren triples down on being a villain and is now the leader of the Dark Order? lol NOPE he gets an undeserved redemption because he shouldn't face consequences for his self-destructive behaviour
  • Kylo Ren and Rey have a completely undeserved kiss at the end that is somehow the most awkward kiss in the series
  • Completely ignoring all the development Finn and Poe had so they can just like, tag along with Rey so they don't have to write 3 characters. Then the get real awkward "no-homo" girlfriends for no real reason

There were plenty of directions RoS could have gone after TLJ, but the biggest issue of Episode 9 is that it chose "none of the above"
