I think a lot of people are reasonably skeptical about how quick these vaccines have developed, but they don't understand that the reason for it is because a lot of the red tape beauracratic stuff was cut out and shifting priorities allowed researchers to get it done this quickly as it became the only focus for a lot of these companies. Not to also mention the use of modern scientific tools. The vaccine still followed the usual testing and review process and also had thousands of people volunteering for the clinical trials.

Excellent post. This is how I've felt, albeit expressed more articulately. But people still tend to shoot back with "Well, I still think it's too fast" >_>

Eventually some will find new ways to bring people in. Large scale anchor and department stores will die because Amazon, but make nice restaurants, brew pubs, and gaming (slot machine hangouts etc) the main draw and folks will still go.

This sums it up well, yeah. There's absolutely a place for malls in the years to come; it's just a matter of which malls adapt with the times and which continue to think Macy's and Orange Julius will be enough to keep the lights on.

A burgeoning trend in recent years has been the "indoor market". 10-20 small local businesses under the same roof, offering boutique-style goods and various food/drink. In other words, to quote Flea Market Montgomery - it's just like, it's just like, a mini-mall! Shopping malls should really try to capitalize on this trend and aggressively court local talent, but as of now, that seems pretty rare.

With something like Legoland, I guess I get it. This would make no sense for the vast majority of theme parks though. Just look at Cedar Point - they seem to clearly prioritize the "adult thrillseeker" market, with the kiddos being a secondary demographic.

The most common defense of Reddit is that the small subreddits are better than the big ones. And like, I get it - /r/truefilm is obviously better than /r/movies, for instance. But because of the way the site is set up, any subreddit will inevitably be either vulnerable to or actively afflicted by problems such as power-tripping mods, hivemind behavior, upvote manipulation and "downvoting to disagree". Additionally, while one can and should ignore the problem subs, that doesn't stop them from causing damage to society (The_Donald during its barely-regulated years, the incel subs)... or at the very least, promoting shitty behavior en masse (/r/amitheasshole, /r/relationships... hell, just about any sub dealing with interpersonal communication).

I realize that every website has good and bad aspects, but I don't think the positives of Reddit outweigh the negatives. At all. I'd love for it to just vanish into thin air; the good aspects, like historian accounts and price-drop alerts, can be readily found elsewhere.

Has anyone who lives near a Family Video checked out their liquidation sales? I was about to head over to the local one tonight just to see if there are any good video game deals, but I'm worried that the good ones probably got swooped up immediately and/or the prices are high. I guess it's worth a check.

The kicker with Family Video is that their sales have almost always varied significantly by location, manager's discretion and such. From my experience, this is very much holding true with the closeout sales as well. That having been said, I've found worthwhile pickups at each FV I've been to so far.

Some games and movies seem to have faulty pricing. Like, $12.99 for used copies of Animal House, or $29.99 for Rare Replay - that kind of thing. Prices no sane person would pay. Most movies are $1.99 to $4.99, though, with some locations having far more movies at $1.99 than others. There are some good game deals, too, and some harder-to-find titles still in the wild.

I'd say it's worth checking out if nearby and/or geographically isolated (I.E. less likely to be hit by resellers).

Options are limited right now due to COVID, but you could try a volunteerism program/organization that has a cause you care about and a revolving door of volunteers. If you meet someone, then you're already representing yourself well with your good deed; call it a "head start." If you don't meet anyone, then at least the volunteering is its own reward.

Aside from that or a "meet cute" encounter (which can happen anywhere), the options won't apply to everyone and are sort of niche, I guess. Church involvement, alumni events, brewery/bar games and events, and so forth. But again, COVID has sidelined a lot of those.

I'm devastated about this. The writing was absolutely on the wall; Family Video has spent the past year or so spearheading the #savethevideostore social media campaign, which primarily consisted of self-deprecating memes. Nonetheless, it sucks ass that the day has finally come.

There's something magical about video rental stores that streaming has never been able to capture. I think it's a combination of the communal feel, the "underdog" factor in recent years, and the fact that renting a random B-movie actually feels like a fun and spontaneous risk (whereas nothing is risked by pressing play on a shitty Hulu Original). Surely there are other factors as well, but at any rate, these stores will be sorely missed.
